Chapter 1: The Legend

EY noticed a piece of paper fall off of the bulletin board behind a group of kids. She only tended to notice little things. She couldn't remember what she read in English, but a random piece of paper, that must have been important. She wondered if the paper belonged to those kids. She ran ahead of her friends to check.

She picked up the paper. "Hey," she called. "I think...you....might have dropped..." but her voice trailed off as she began to read the fancy handwriting.

The Legend of 827 Redd Street

There was once a group of friends who entered the mansion at 827 Redd Street. They went in one night on a dare...and they never came out. Someone or something killed them all in the mansion. It's said that the eight friends haunt the house and anyone who enters never comes out.

It doesn't end there. Three years ago, a group of kids heard about the legend. They didn't believe the legend and created a group of eight to disprove the tale. The following night, all eight of them entered the mansion...no one ever heard from them again.

So here's the question: Do you believe in the legend? Why don't you try it out? Unless you're scared. Get eight people. Go to the mansion, If you get out, tell us the truth of the mansion. Only those who return will know, but be warned, those who enter never come out. So if you're brave enough write your name below.

EY continued to stare at the paper apprehensively. Her mind and mouth could only form one thought.

"Guys, where's Redd Street?" she asked.

Confused, her friends crowded around her to see what she was talking about.

As the smartest, Alexis was the first to finish reading the note. She raised an eyebrow at her friend.

"EY, you don't honestly believe this stuff, do you?'

"Well..." she stuttered.

"So are we gonna do it?" Zack wondered, his blue eyes shining with excitement.

Lindsey shrugged. "Why not, we've got nothing better to do."

"Yeah," Brian agreed. "It's Halloween. No rehearsal tonight."

Alexis sighed. "No, no," she said in exasperation. "We are not going. Haunted mansions do not exist. It's a waste of time. No."

"But what else are we supposed to do?" Dallas practically whined. "Only little kids get to do anything fun," he continued to complain. "People don't take it to kindly when you show up at their house for candy when you're in high school."

"I can still do that," Zack pointed out happily.

"Yeah, well you look like you're ten," Dallas reminded him.

Lindsey grabbed a pencil out of her bag. "I say we do it," she decided. She wrote her name in the first slot then handed the pencil to Brian, who followed suit.

Dallas scribbled his signature down after them.

"I hope no one actually has to read this," Zoey observed.

Dallas rolled his eyes at her and held the pencil to Miguel, who was looking rather anxious.

"Eh...I don't know about this," he stammered.

"Aw, are you scared?" Dallas teased.

Blushing, Miguel snatched the pencil out of his hand. "No," he said defensively. He signed his name and Zoey went after him. Zack was next. Alexis pursed her lips. This whole thing was stupid, she thought. But she was pretty used to it by now. Her friends did stupid things a lot. She took out her own pencil and sighed. She had to make one thing clear though:

"I'm only going to prove this stuff isn't real."

Lindsey turned to EY. "What about you?" She didn't want to force her since she knew the kid got scared easily.

EY was scared all right. Almost every part of her was saying to keep as far away as possible from that mansion, it was danger waiting to strike, but another part of her kept asking, what is this legend? She couldn't tune that part out. She hadn't even heard of Redd Street. She wondered what exactly went on inside the house. It said people died, but how? Was it the house itself or something inside of it? Her curiosity ate away at her until she couldn't bear it any longer. "I have to know more!" she exclaimed before signing her nickname in the last slot.

"My OCD is killing me at the fact that the ages aren't in order," Alexis said, eying Dallas in particular.

"So anyway," Brian continued. "What time are we going there?

The group thought for a moment.

"Midnight," Zack suggested. "It'll make it even creepier."

"It's a Wednesday," Alexis pointed out. "My mom would never let me stay out that late, especially on a school night," she added.

EY had an idea, then hated herself for having it, but said it anyway. "If we're gonna go all out on this, we should go at 6:66."

Brian face-palmed. Sometimes he wondered if there was a brain in her head at all. "Kid," he said slowly. "6:66 isn't a time."

"Oh," she said dumbfounded.

"Nine o'clock," Zoey proposed. "It's not too early, so it'll still be dark, and it's not too late to be out."

"Will your mom be okay with that?" Miguel asked Alexis.

Have you met my mother, she wanted to respond, but Dallas interrupted before she could say a word.

"She better be," he replied. "It's Halloween. She's gotta let you stay out a little later. Just tell her you're gonna hang out with Zoey...and then conveniently forget to mention that the rest of us are gonna be there too. And Lindsey will be able to take you both. And Brian can take the kid," he said referring to EY. "I'll take the other little kid and Miguel since he still can't pass his drivers test." He smiled jokingly, but it still angered Miguel.

Alexis thought about it. Since it was a holiday, her mom gave her a ten o'clock curfew. It shouldn't take that long, she told herself. All they had to do was go there, realize it was just a regular old mansion, or maybe a group of teenagers trying to scare people, then come back. That wouldn't take more than an hour. She'd be fine. The mansion was absolutely not haunted. The only death she had to worry about was the murder her mother would commit if she didn't make it back in time.
