Chapter Twelve | You Burn With Us

As soon as they step into the doorway, Quinn is ht with he overwhelming smell. When she had been shot in the leg in the arena, she had gotten a small infection. And the smell of it had taken awhile to get used to, but the smell of the warehouse was like the smell of infection time one-hundred. Quinn cringed as she looked at the bodies that were lined up in the entry way.

"We had to keep them away from the wounded," Paylor stated, looking Quinn up and down-- noticing the look of disgust on her face. "We have volunteer's digging a mass grave just outside of the District." she confessed.

But that didn't help all that much. To Quinn, it was like they were being tossed aside-- like garbage. Even though she knew that it was only that way for the sake of the other people who were wounded, but were still alive. Just as they were about to step into the main room of the warehouse, Katniss stopped dead in her tracks, causing the entire group to slow down. But Quinn followed Otto, Jenson, Jules, and Orion ahead of Katniss. Stepping into the next room was more horrifying than she had been anticipating. The smell was awful, and the sounds were just as bad. There were people crying, trying to assure each other that it would be fine, and there were people that were quietly muttering to each other about the bombing or someone who had or was probably going to die.

Quinn could feel her stomach twisting, and she felt like whatever she had eaten that morning was about to make a reappearance. There were kids sitting with one another, wounded-- there was one girl who looked like she was maybe about Quinn's age, that had a red burn covered half of her face and her entire left arm. There was a boy, who may have been ten...give or take a few years. His leg was splinted, but his bandages already needed to be changed.

"Katniss?" Quinn stopped in her tracks and so did everyone who was ahead of her. They turned, and saw a boy a few years younger than Quinn, looking at Katniss. His neck was wrapped in bandages, and he looked like he hadn't eaten for weeks. "Are you going to fight with us?"

Katniss hadn't been expecting that question. But until Quinn, who would have thought about her answer longer than it would have taken to just answer it-- she answered almost right away.

She nodded simply, "I am," she stated.

"But what about the baby?" a woman asked, not that far from where Katniss stood.

"I lost it." she replied simply, her voice was weak and quiet.

"What are you doing here?" a young girl asked.

Katniss glanced around at the other people at the warehouse. "I came to see you."

The warehouse fell completely silent, nobody said a wore. But everyone who could, pushed themselves up to their feet and rose their hand in District Twelves symbol, the three finger salute. Quinn could see the camera crew hurrying to get shots of it. After a long moment, the group of them began to walk around a bit more...and Katniss' part of the group decided it would be best to go with Cressida to get some shots of the ruins in Eight. Quinn stayed back, messing with the small ear piece in her ear that made a small buzzing sound. Nobody had said anything yet, but the buzzing was hard to ignore in the tense warehouse.

"Quinn!"

Quinn looked towards the sound of Orion's voice, he was standing near the back of the warehouse and was waving her over. Quinn hurried towards him, "What is it?" she asked as she got closer to him.

"Tanya," he started and motioned to a middle aged woman who was sitting on the ground. Her arm was in a makeshift sling, and her graying black hair was matted down in the back, and she had some burns on her face, and her collarbone. "Wanted to meet you."

Quinn glanced at him and then at her. She had no idea how to talk to these people, there was nothing she could say to help them. But Quinn took Orion's place, crouching down in front of her.The woman reached out and grabbed Quinn's hand and smiled softly.

"We've always supported you here in Eight." she smiled kindly, "And we hoped you had a trick up your sleeve in the arena."

Quinn smiled a bit, "I barely know I had one." she replied.

"You've changed so much since your games, Quinn," she said, there was no smile and it wasn't meant to be a compliment. "Panem's going to need the feisty pearl again." she stated confidently. Her voice was weak, and tired from the ordeal she had gone through hours earlier.

Quinn stared at her for a moment.

"If you want things done right, you'll have to make sure they are yourself." she explained simply, "And that won't happen if you just do what you're told all the time."

Quinn pressed her eyebrows together sharply, "What do you mean?"

"You got more accomplished when you just did things and didn't take orders. Just trust yourself." she said.

Quinn sighed glancined at the people who were sitting around Tanya. "Is that all you wanted to tell me?" she asked, "To give me advice."

She smiled, "Oh, maybe." she sighed, "And to tell you that we've all noticed how discouraged you've been since you returned to the Capitol." she told her, "And you don't need to be. You don't give yourself enough credit-"

Suddently her voice was blocked out and the ear piece made a loud sound. "Evacuate the warehouse now! Incoming bombers for a second wave of bombing!" Quinn didn't recognize the voice as she stood up, letting go of the woman's hand. Orion was only a few steps behind her, and he looked around the warehouse-- horrified.

"We can't leave them here..." Quinn said quietly, glancing down at Tanya. "We can't leave these people here, Orion." she said in a whisper as she looked up at him.

"We can't get all of them out either,"

The two of them stood there, frozen in their spots. There were too many people there, too many people that wanted to fight the Capitol-- that were happy to see them. And they were supposed to just walk out and leave them? The two of them looked around at people, defenseless. Some walking around and talking to each other.

"Quinn, Orion," Otto ran up to the two of them. "Jules, Marcus, and Jenson are all already starting-- help the ones who can walk get out." he ordered in  quiet, hushed, but harsh tone. "The building near where we came in has a bunker, get them to that building. Okay?"

"What are we supposed to tell them?" Orion asked, "Otto, I can't lie to them. I won't."

"We don't have a choice, Orion." he stated in response, "In this war, we will have to make hard choices. We will have to choose who lives, and who dies. But that's better than losing all of them."

Quinn ha never heard Otto talk like that, but the way he spoke-- his tone was just daring her or Orion to question him again. But after a second he went on his way to help get people out. Quinn sighed, turning around and crouching down to Tanya.

"Can you walk?" she asked.

Tanya nodded.

"Can you show me where the old Justice Building was?" Orion asked, lying quickly.

Tanya stared at him but then nodded, she held her good arm up though for help from him up.

"I'll see you out there?" Orion asked, staring at Quinn. Quinn simply nodded.

With that Orion and Tanya began to make their way out of the warehouse. Leaving Quinn standing there alone for a moment, looking around. How could she choose? How could anyone choose that? How could anyone leave innocent people to die like that? Suddenly the ground shook violently, and the warehouse shook-- dust and ash from the last bombing falling to the ground. Everyone there fell silent, and then quickly began to talk to one another, so Quinn quickly crouched down to the people closest to her.

"Can you walk?" she asked quickly, and they nodded. "If you hurry, you'll catch up to Orion Snow, he's going to a bunker." a few people sitting near by also stood up and began to follow the ones she had been speaking to. Then, the ground shook violently again, this time the bomb was close enough to knock her to the ground. The bomb this time caused everyone in the warehouse to get louder and a lot of them let out a scream.

"Quinn!" Otto grabbed her by the arm and pulled her up, "You need to get out of here, now. Be on the look out, I'll send more that direction and then I'll be right behind you." he explained giving her a light shove. Quinn began to run towards the entrance, and another bomb that was close-- knocked her too the ground.

"Quinn! Quinn!"

Quinn didn't want to slow down, but she did. She looked down at a woman, her leg had been amputated. Quinn cringed at the thought of having to tell her no to  helping her. But she didn't.

"Please, you have to take my Abraham." she pleaded, there was a kid maybe about Athennia's age that clung to her. He had extremely dark skin, and big brown eyes, and some burns on his arms. But he looked able. The woman stared up at her, her hands on her sons waist, ready to give him to Quinn. "Please!"

Quinn didn't say anything, but she wasn't going to just leave. She reached down and grabbed the young boy-- pulling him up and away from his mother. But his arms locked around her neck and a blood curdling scream was flowing from his mouth. So Quinn wrapped an arm around him and used her other hand to pry open his arms.

"Thank you, thank you-" the woman's thanks was interrupted by another bomb hitting the ground near by and her ear piece.

"Get out of there!

The boy in Quinn's arms made it more difficult to run because of his kicking to get back to his mother as she kept running. But the armor on her made it easier to ignore. She hurried out of the warehouse, the boy was still screaming and now it was right in her ears. But the bombing was getting closer, and as she got out of the warehouse she saw a Capitol hovercraft fly over the warehouse once but not dropping anything until they were past the warehouse. Quinn was maybe half way down the street when the boy finally calmed down and was just clinging to Quinn for dear life, but his cries were still loud.

Quinn ran until they got to the opening where they had been dropped off. In the doorway of a building, she saw Jules, waving for her to go in there. Once she was in there, she ran past Commander Paylor and a few others who were set up trying to shoot at the hover crafts, to at least get them away from the hospital. Quinn ran to the back of the building and then down a flight of stairs that Jules pointed to. When she got to the bottom, she saw that there were maybe fifteen or so people from the warehouse. The young boy, Abraham, his crying didn't stop-- and Quinn had absolutely no idea how to make it stop.

"Are you okay?" Orion asked as he left someone he had been talking to.

Quinn gasped for air as she tried to put the boy down, he clung to her even more. "I'm fine...just...just out of breath." she replied as she finally managed to pry the boy off of her and set him on the ground next to the kids she had told to chase after Orion. "You-" she began to ask but as soon as she was up right, she felt Orion's arms wrap around her in a tight hug.

"I thought you were right behind me." he stated, he sounded like he had been worried and his grip on her tightened. For a moment, Quinn just stood there, but after a second, she hugged him back.

After a couple minutes of sitting in the bunker, everything around them shook. It was almost as if the entire bunker was going to cave in on itself. And almost immediately as it happened, there was another voice in her ear giving her the all clear.

Quinn looked around the bunker for Otto, but he was no where to be seen. Quinn jumped up from where she had been seated and ran up the stairs.

"Quinn!" Orion was right behind her.

"Jules!" Quinn called to her as she made her way towards the bunker, "Did Otto get in?" she asked.

Jules stared at her, "I...I didn't see him. I may have gone to find the other group-"

Quinn pushed past her and out of the building. Towards the warehouse, she could see black smoke billowing up into the sky, and she could even hear the crackling of flames. Quinn ran towards the warehouse, and when she got to the street, she saw that she was just behind Katniss and Gale.

"Gale! Was Otto with you guys?!" she called after him.

But he just stared at her for a moment, and Quinn felt her stomach sink to the ground.

"Help them!" Katniss ordered as she got closer to Boggs, and the others who had already gotten there. "Get them out!" she stopped at the edge of the torched warehouse, and like Quinn and everyone else-- was staring at it in horror.

"Quinn-" Orion grabbed at her arm but she kept running towards the warehouse. She almost didn't stop before she just ran right into it.

"Otto!?" she called into the flames as if there would be some sort of answer, but there wasn't one. She turned and looked at the others, "Isn't he out here? He said he was right behind me!"

Nobody said anything to her, the only voice that broke the silence was Cressida.

"Katniss, can you tell everyone what you're seeing right now?" she asked, a camera getting pointed at Katniss. "Katniss, what do you wanna say?"

"I want the rebels to know that I'm alive, that I'm in District Eight with Quinn Maverick and Orion Snow where the Capitol just bombed a hospital filled with unarmed men, women, and children." she stated, Quinn forced herself to look away from the burning warehouse. The smoke was burning her eyes, and her eyes were burning even more from tears filled with tears that she hadn't even known had appeared. "There will be no survivors. If you think one second that the Capitol will ever treat us fairly, you are lying you yourselves." Katniss's voice was no longer shaky like it had been. But with every word, she became more and more angry. "Because we know who they are, and what they do." she stated, "This is what they do! And we must fight back!" she exclaimed loudly, pointing at the warehouse.

There was lull in her speech, and Quinn could feel the old anger and frustration that she had once had for the Capitol coming back. The way they tried to dispose of people who disagreed with them was sick-- and they didn't care if innocent people died too.

"I have a message for President Snow," Katniss said after the long pause, her hands were rolled up in tight fists. "You can torture us, bomb us, and burn our districts to the ground." she said pausing, "But do you see that?" she continued pointing towards burning rubble. Quinn wiped her eyes, and she followed Katniss's finger to see a Capitol hover craft in flames. "If we burn, you burn with us!"
