Chapter Ten | The North Tunnel
A few days had passed, and with each day-- the plans became more and more solid. The rebels would go at the North Tunnel in three waves. One wave would go in, and as soon as the lapdogs started to think that it was almost over, another wave would come in. But that didn't mean they would win, they were using not even a sixth of the rebels. Penni, Taylon, and Jakob had both been given small cameras that would be attached to their chest piece of their armor. The second time Coin had contacted them, she said that if things went south-- all of the video would be getting transmitted directly to Thirteen and it could be used to honor the ones who died.
It didn't make Quinn any more comfortable with the plan. But she didn't have a choice, so when it came time to meet with First Response and the rest of the people who would be going in the second wave...waiting for the signal that they should move in from Sargent Collins. They had all been cooped up in a old abandoned pile of wreckage. It had been one of the big factories that had been destroyed in one of the bombings. So none of the lapdogs would have expected anything there, because that building was completely useless.
"What if we don't get the signal?" Penni asked from her spot across from Quinn and someone that Paylor had assigned to the group. "They said it themselves, they have a lot more weapons than we do."
"Then everyone takes orders from Benson," the man from beside Quinn stated, "It's not our job to ask questions--"
"It's our job to try and not get blown to bits," Penni retorted sharply, "And if Collins gets killed, we could end up going in blind."
"Would you zip it!?" Jules hissed from a few feet away.
They both settled into their spots, and the group fell quiet again. Listening carefully for the first wave to move on the tunnel. There wasn't one piece of Quinn that felt good about this. If they wanted to weaken the Nut, they should have just bombed it. Destroyed it and everyone in it. Everyone in there were lapdogs as far as she was concerned. By this point, if they had been too...scared to stand with the rebels...it didn't matter. They had plenty of time and chances to do it.
After about ten minutes of silence besides the sound of the trucks switching the patrolling Peacekeepers, there was a gunshot, then another, and another. And before Quinn could try to keep count, there were too many for her to even try to. From both sides there were guns firing, and with each gunshot Quinn couldn't help but think if someone was dying. And the thought that it was someone fighting for the rebels just made her angry, but she couldn't careless if there were peacekeepers.
After what must have been hundreds of rapid gunfire, there was a loud explosion that made the air surrounding them all vibrate. It wasn't necessarily a bomb...it was nothing like the firebombs that were dropped from hovercraft's when she left Four. It was smaller than that, a grenade or something. Something of that size. Then suddenly, it was quiet, besides a few stray gunshots.
"Lets go!" Jules called over her shoulder, "Everyone on this side," she started motioning to Penni's side, "Go that way, follow Benson. You guys, follow me."
Quinn rolled her eyes, there's only fifty of us, she thought to herself. The first wave had fifty, the second had fifty, and the third had eighty to finish strong.
But Quinn did as she was told and started jogging along with the other twenty-five that had been put on her side when they first got to the building. She felt like her throat was closing, and her mouth was dry. She felt like she was going to be sick, and she felt like her heart was in her throat. As soon as they emerged from the building, it wasn't hard to see what had caused the explosion. The rebels had tossed a grenade into the group of peacekeepers, upturning a few of their trucks and at least shocking them and calling for backup from inside the tunnel.
Then as soon as peacekeepers began to fire their weapons towards them, the man who she had been seated next to, quickly grabbed her by the elbow and pulled her aside. So they could duck behind one of their over turned trucks, it was like it was almost a curtain of bullets were flying towards them. The sound of bullets hitting the metal truck made her ears ring so much so that it was like she was listening to everything through a tube.
"You know how to use that thing, don't you princess?" the man asked, motioning to the gun in her hands.
Quinn glared at him, "Of course I do," she retorted, "Coin wouldn't have sent me if I didn't--"
He scoffed, "Sure she wouldn't have," he paused, "As long as a tiny girl like yourself knows how to use a gun, why not send her into a suicide mission?"
"I'm not a kid," Quinn retorted defensively as the man ducked around the back end of the truck and began to shoot towards the lapdogs. "In case you didn't know, I've gone through more than you probably ever will--"
"That's the attitude that will get everyone on your team killed," he retorted as he ducked back to be next to her. "You need to stop thinking of this as some personal war you have against the Capitol," he paused, "Everdeen has, now you have to. This isn't about you. It's about taking down the Capitol not just Snow."
"I know it's not just about me--"
He rose an eyebrow, "You need to take control then, stop getting ordered around."
"I'm not a Sargent," she stated, "I have to take orders-"
"You have more survival skills than Benson does in his whole body," he stated, "Without being so impulsive, you probably would have died in your first games," he paused before looking around the back end of the truck. "Lapdogs are approaching with who knows what, what's your call?"
Quinns' eyes widened, "My call?"
"You really think you're going to be any help to your team if you just take orders? You need to give orders," he stated, "What's your call?"
Quinn stared at him for a long moment. She felt like her mouth was gaping open, but after a few seconds she crawled past the man and looked around the truck and saw that a group of lapdogs were opening fire on another small group of rebels. Not them.
"They aren't coming this way," she said looking towards him again, "Doesn't their armor have a weak spot on their back?"
He nodded, "The back of their neck is exposed,"
"So we try aiming there?" she asked.
He rose an eyebrow, "I donno, do we?"
Quinn thought for a moment, there was a chance that the sound would just draw more attention to the truck where the two of them were crouched down. Then in the process getting them all killed. But then again, there was so much activity, it was so loud already that the two of them probably wouldn't make that much of a difference. The two of them kept most of their bodies hidden at first, doing their best to get a shot that would at least be bad enough to make one of the lapdogs useless.
But after a few rounds, after two of the five lapdogs had been taken down-- whether it was because of the two of them or someone else, she wasn't sure...but the other three either retreated further into the tunnel, or they turned their attention to someone else. But then, as soon as they were out of the range, Quinn was able to see the group of rebels all there trying to recover, a few of them were dealing with some sort of wound...
Quinn looked around the group, looking for a familiar face and saw two that she knew for sure. Jules and Coleman were both over there. So Quinn quickly got to her feet and started running as fast as her suit would let her towards the group and the man was just behind her. But as they got closer, there was loud and rapid gunshots and then she felt an arm wrap around her waist and pull her down to the ground as most of the members in the other group of rebels began to hit the ground too. But there was a group of them that were shooting towards one of the few trucks that the lapdogs had.
She watched as a few of them who were still up off the ground were shot down. Clean shots bouncing off their armor or getting lodged in it, or shots going right to the weak spots.
Jules was one of the first ones down. She was one of the first rebels that Quinn saw killed by the lapdogs during the rebels suicide mission to try and get the North Tunnel.
