Ch. 16: The Training Assignment
The trip to the bridge-builder's home was uneventful and smooth. The Watchman kept a close eye on us from the skies, and kept checking in with me to tell me that the surrounding areas were safe from any and all dangers, other than a pothole or two.
When we finally arrived, a young woman with long black hair opened the door for us and let us inside. Her name was Tsunami, and the 28-year-old was our client's daughter.
She lead us up to the guest bedrooms, and we put one sensei in one room, and the other in the other room. As a team, we all decided to share the rooms with our senseis, and separated off that way.
Ayana, Yusuke, and I surrounded our little sensei's body as he lay on the futon. We were waiting for our fearless leader to awaken.
Silence surrounded us thickly as we waited. Judging by the commotion next door, I would venture a guess to say that Kakashi-sensei had already woken up, and has been so for a few hours. Getting impatient, I did something that was either really stupid, or really smart. Or maybe a little bit of both.
I placed my right hand on Yugi-sensei's abdomen, about where his core should be, at least in reference to myself.
I closed my eyes, ignoring the questions of my teammates, and dug for my chakra. I pulled out from my core and sent down my right arm down to my hand. I let the indigo energy collect there for a bit, and when I felt I had a decent amount, about equal to a baseball, I sharply shoved the energy into my sensei's abs.
His eyes flew open, and sat up suddenly, coughing harshly before glaring at me.
"Nice wake-up call, Utagawa."
I smirk. "You're welcome. I wasn't even sure if that was going to work or not, but I thought that I would give it a shot. You should have been awake by now, sensei."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tell me about it." He shook his head before looking around curiously. "Where are we, anyways?"
Ayana took the liberty to respond. "Tazuna-san's house."
"Ah." Yugi-sensei paused.
I nodded. "So...what now? We have a few days to recuperate, since I am pretty sure that, according to what I can here from team seven next door, Zabuza is actually still alive, and is going to be taking some time to heal back up. That considered, we should have a few days to do some stuff, like training, maybe?"
At the mention of training, my teammates grew excited. Chattering filled the room before Yugi-sensei coughed to get our attention.
"That sounds like a good idea. And I have the perfect thing in mind." We all leaned in closer in anticipation.
"Do you guys remember that bird-like thing that Utagawa summoned from that card?" We all nodded. "That is called a summon."
Ayana tilted her head. "I thought that summons were animals?"
Yugi-sensei nodded. "Most of the time, they are. But I have a special type of summoning creature. I have a contract with card spirits." He paused for effect. "My assignment for you is to sign a summoning contract. I do not expect you to find one right away, but I do want you to find your own contract. This is a long term assignment that I want you to have accomplished by the time you each become Chunin.
"Now, for a short term assignment, I want each of you to focus on your individual goals that you spoke of during your introductions. If you have any questions on how to go about that, feel free to ask."
We each nodded.
"Now, that training will start tomorrow. For now, take the time until lights out to brainstorm ways to go about your training. Dismissed."
Looking at each other, we moved away from our sensei to the other side of the room. Positioning ourselves in a huddle, Ayana pulled out three pieces of paper and three pencils, and handed each of us one
Her brother snickered. "Geez Ayana. Are you always prepared to take notes, or something?"
She rolled her eyes. "It never hurts to bring along some paper and pencils."
She started jotting down notes on her paper. "Let's start by writing down certain aspects of our goals that we want to work on. I think that we can start there and expand."
Yusuke nodded and started writing.
I gazed down at my blank piece of paper. I started writing what was on my mind after the incident with Zabuza. A few ideas came to mind.
Ninjustu
-using Hidden Mist Jutsu to sense things.
-find chakra nature
My list was extremely short, but I think that it was a good start.
I glance up at the twins, to see that they were still writing stuff down. I silently got up to walk over the Yugi-sensei.
Ayana glanced at me before looking back down at her paper.
I sat in front of my sensei and handed him my short list.
He scanned it and smiled.
"I like how you are focusing on only a few things at a time. The second of these two goals we can actually do right now, if you want." I looked at him curiously as he dug around in his pouch. "Actually, it would probably be a good idea for all three of you to find out your chakra natures. Yusuke, Ayana, why don't you come on over here for a second."
The twins made their way over, and Yugi-sensei handed each of us a strip of paper.
"Funnel some of your chakra into these strips of paper, and depending on the reaction, we will be able to tell what kind of chakra nature you have." We stared at him. "What are you waiting for? Try it out!"
We all glanced at each other, trying to decide mentally who should go first.
Yusuke closed his eyes and scrunched up his face. It took a minute or two before the paper burst into flames and crumbled away to ash.
"Congrats, Yusuke! You are a fire type!"
He grinned and turned to Ayana.
She smiled gently and closed her eyes. In only a few seconds, her paper split into two ragged pieces.
"A wind type. If you and your brother work together, you could do some serious damage!"
They all turned to me. It was my turn.
I closed my eyes and reached into my indigo energy source. It eagerly leapt down my left arm and into the paper.
We watched curiously as the paper grew damp. Yugi-sensei was about to speak when the paper dried and burst into flames. It turned to ash in my grip and fell to the floor.
They looked at me shock. "That's quite the conflicting nature you have. Congrats, Utagawa."
I nodded.
"OK team. That is enough excitement for one night. Go get some shut eye. Your individual training starts tomorrow."
