Ch. 15: Interference

A banter between Zabuza and Kakashi-sensei took place as we watched.  Then, when they leapt away from one another, their hands flew through a long series of hand signs.

"Water Style!  Water Dragon Missile!"

The dragons rose out of the lake and launched at each other.  Upon collision, they both collapsed on the duo that had also leapt at each other.  They crossed blades before separating again.

Watching from afar, it almost appeared as if the two opponents were dancing a mirrored duet.  They matched each other exactly, move for move.

At one point, both ninja skid to a stop on the choppy water, and raised their right hands to their mouths, and their left arm above their head.  They brought their left arm down, and Kakashi-sensei spoke.

"Through them all."

The sudden response from the copycat ninja seemed to rattle Zabuza thoroughly.

They brought their hands together, each finger pad of each finger tip touching its twin on the other hand.

Kakashi-sensei spoke again.

"Got that sickeningly evil look in his eye...right?"

Veins popped on Zabuza's forehead as he spoke.  "Feh...you're a pale imitation."

Kakashi-sensei chimed in with Zabuza.

"I'm the genuine article.  No mere copycat stands a chance against me."

I must say, it was very creepy to watch the Jonin play mind games with the opponent.  But at the same time, it was a highly formidable way to go about it.  And Zabuza snapped under the mental pressure.

"YOU MIMIC ME LIKE A PARROT!  I'LL CLOSE YOUR BEAK FOR GOOD!"

Zabuza froze, and Kakashi-sensei's hands blurred once again, but without the accompaniment of Zabuza.

"Water Style: Giant Waterfall!"

A huge wall of water rose up in front of Kakashi-sensei, and crashed down onto Zabuza.  It swept him towards the trees, where the rogue ninja roughly collided into one of them with his back, coming to an abrupt stop.

Four kunai knives appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and pierced through both of his arms and legs.  Kakashi-sensei landed in a crouch on a branch above Zabuza.

"That's that..."

The mist ninja peered up at his defeater.

"What...can you see the future...?"

In response, the victorious ninja raised a kunai level to his own face.

"I foresee your death."

Before anyone could move, however, two senbon needles came flying toward Zabuza, piercing him through the neck.

Originating from a neighboring tree, a young-looking ninja, adorning a mask on his face, chuckled.

"Your prediction came true."

Kakashi-sensei knelt down next to the once-alive Zabuza.  He felt for a pulse.

The masked ninja bowed.

"Thank you for your help.  I hope you don't mind my interfering, but I wanted the satisfaction of putting Zabuza out of his misery myself."

Kakashi-sensei turned to the stranger.

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but judging by your mask, aren't you a shinobi hunter from the Village Hidden in the Mist?"

The glance at me from my teammates didn't go unnoticed before resuming their attention to the addressed ninja.

The ninja hesitated before answering.  "Well, aren't you a smart one?!"

Naruto made a move next to me like he was going to attack the stranger, but I grabbed his arm before he could get very far.

"A shinobi hunter?"

"I am, indeed, a member of the elite tracking unit from the Village Hidden in the Mist.  It is our responsibility--and our art--to hunt down and deal with the rogues and the outlaws..."

Naruto kept looking back and forth between the limp body of Zabuza and the hunter ninja.

"What's going on here?!!  Who are you?!!"

Kakashi-sensei stood up from his place beside Zabuza and responded to Naruto's outburst.

"Relax, Naruto.  He's not an enemy."

Naruto ripped himself out of my grip and approached him teacher.

"That's not what I asked!  I mean..what I mean is...he killed Zabuza...who wasn't exactly a pushover...but still got taken out by a guy who's only about my age!  Like it was nothing!  What, do we suck or something?!  What's up with that?!"

"Oh.  Well, you have my sympathy.  I can see where a thing like that would be hard to accept.  But it's a fact you'll have to live with."  Kakashi-sensei ruffled up Naruto's hair.  "This probably won't be the last time we run into a kid who's both younger than you, and stronger than me."

The hunter ninja appeared next to Zabuza.  "Your battle is over, for now, and the remains must be disposed of, lest they give up secrets to our foes."  He picked up the corpse and draped it over his back.  "Well then, I must be off."  They disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

Kakashi-sensei sighed.  "Now!  We still have to escort our client the rest of the way to his home.  Let's put our best feet forward!"

Just as he was about to take a step forward, the Jonin stumbled and fell face-first to the ground.

It was my turn to sigh.  "It looks like we now have two exhausted and passed-out Jonin on our hands."  I turned to my fellow Genin, and analyze our ranks.  after debating mentally for a moment, I nodded to myself and gave out my orders.  "OK.  Here's the plan.  Yusuke, you take Kakashi-sensei.  Naruto, take Yugi-sensei.  Ayana, you take the lead in front of  the boys, and Sakura, your follow the boys.  Tazuna-san, I am going to have you behind Sakura and in front of me.  I'll take up the rear.  Sound good to everyone?"

The Genin and the client nodded, and took the time to assume their positions.  I turned to the Watchman, who hadn't abandoned his place from the air above me the entire time since I had last given him any instructions.

"Watchman, may I ask you to take to the sky and keep an eye on the surrounding area for us?  It would be helpful if you could let us know if there are any incoming dangers.  Once we get to our final destination, you can go, if you wish."

The Watchman nodded in confirmation.  He beat his powerful wings and soared up high above us.

Turning back to the rest of my group, I found them all gazing at me with a patient question in their eyes.

"Let's go!  Tazuna-san, please guide us to your home."

Everyone nodded and set off for the home of our client, the bridge-builder.
