Canto XXII: The Battle for the Flesh.

Read in Landscape.

Hidden from vision of rebels they spied
Deep in the forest where Osage were now lied.
Watching the decadence spilling on decks
Slowly as pirates were sailing the wrecks.
Sloth that had harmed them when journey did start
Ruined their foes as it picked them apart.

Slowing them down as their rations they waste
Taking not voyage with cunning or haste.
Men were now spoiling on decks of the ships
All that was saved for the length of the trip.
Drunken and bloated from food and their wine
Won by the deepest and greatest of crimes.

Greatly rejoicing at fortune they found
Brought by the man who in hull was now bound.
Soon would his ransom be used for their good
Wrought by their leader in victory stood.
Loudly they dance and greedily drank
Claiming the vessel they almost had sank.

Knowing not gluttony's sealing their doom
Digging for rebels their hastening tomb.
Aware not maiden had sped from their grasp
Back when the cannons with fury had blast
Casting her over the edge of the rails
Setting in motion what caused them to fail.

Ignorant that maiden had friends she could ask
Helping the peasant in dangerous task.
Bringing them down to now wage on them war
Great so that all of their prize be yet tore
Back from the hands of the men who did fight
Stealing their vessel in fury and spite.

Deep in the woods they did watch what transpired
Things of their foes that were great and so dire.
Hidden from view of the pirates who danced
Bidding their time and awaiting their chance.
Longing for moment that comes when they strike
Watching them fall with the waning of might.

Chief did now set by the side of the maid
Looking at trouble before them now laid.
Better the prospect than first had then seemed
Back when his warriors had struck on this scheme.
Men on the ship did not know of their place
All they consumed with a ravenous haste.

Leaning he spoke of their fortunate fate
Telling the maid how his fear had abate.
Seeing the men on the ship he now knew
Osage could strive with the fury of crew.
Whisp'ring to maiden the man did now speak
Telling again what was goal they did seek.

"Great is the decadence found on the ships
Heading not effort that's needed for trip.
Soon to the side of the river they'll pull
Act that is needed to compensate fools
Eating the whole of their rations that's stored
Down in the hull in their cabins on board.

Far from their powder and cannons that blast
Men to the ground by our spears shall be cast.
Soon they will fall to the fury of braves
Sent to a tomb that yet early was made."

Hearing his words, the maiden did nod
Ready to lunge from the paths that they trod.
Hidden from view of the crew that did stand
High as the target of all of their plans.
Still in her heart yet a fear she did feel
Knowing that battle some thing would yet steal.

Quiet she spoke now revealing her fear
Telling the chief that her doom was yet near.

"I bid you speed and hope that plan you've made
Will grant us life and stave away the grave.
Your courage great is very good and bold
But still foreboding sense my heart does hold.

Portending doom does prick at servant's throat
Some dreadful fate I fear is bound on boat.
Yet choice in matter runs so very dry
If servant fails to act the prince will surely die.

So lead my friend I'll take what fate does give
And yield my life if death's what God does bid."

Turning her head to the task that's on hand
Dwelling in heart on the chieftain's own plan.
Looking at vessel where foes were now stayed
Deep in their sins and their hungers they laid.
Knowing not presence of hunters who keep
Deep in the shadows as life they now seek.

Heading not prudence nor cautious desire
Only to bask in their hunger and ire.
Soon would their supplies yet linger and dry
Forcing them land on the shore or to die.
Hunting for game that the pirates could claim
Osage would launch from disguises they deigned.

Bringing on head of the sailors a wrack
Great as when vessel by traitors was sacked.
Gaining for friend what the men had then stole
Back when on board of the ship they had strode.
Capturing all of her men and the crew
Except for ones they had already slew.

Making not progress that first had been feared
Back when the maiden had spoken in tears.
Patient they stalked like their hunting a beast
Watching disgusted as gluttons did feast.
Hastening loss of the rations they owned
Slowly their bows and their arrows they honed.

Many the days they did track them from shore
Knowing that nigh would their might be yet bore
Down on the head of the villainous thieves
Men who the vessel La Chair had yet grieved.
Patient like cat who is watching its prey
Deep in the shadows of grass where it lay

Waiting to pounce at the soonest chance
Quit and still not revealing its stance.
Osage did now see as rejoicing did die
Soon on the ground there where many there lied.
Glutted from feasting that broke on the decks
Ending the party that started on wrecks.

Pirates had spent what was saved for the trip
Stored in the hull of the pair of the ships.
Men were now seeing that cupboards were dry
Fearing that far on the ocean they'll die.
Stranded with little a water or else
Slacking their thirst or restoring their health.

Up to their leader the thieves do now go
Speaking to rebel of worries and woe
Stored in the hearts of the wretches and crew
Telling the man of the trouble that brewed.
Asking him make what is better abode
Gaining again what their forbears had stowed

Deep in the hull for no man could yet bare
Hunger so great that the pirates now dared.
Thinking on problem he lifted his eyes
Deepest of forest the rebel now spied.
Knowing that game in its bound'ries are held
Deep where so many a creature may dwell.

"Pull to side, to shores we'll go
Nature's stores we'll plunder well
Deep where greatest life abodes
Found where many creatures dwell.

Soon we'll fill our holds again
Gaining fast what sin has lost
Strength of arms for life will fend
Fear not vice has little cost."

Striking on plans to now hunt in the woods
Great where so many a game was yet stood.
Diable did bid them to follow this scheme
Hoping that obedience grant would now bring
Men to his side and yet stay them from path
Surely that lead to the deepest of wrath.

Telling them gather their powder and guns
Quick so that men to their forest could run.
Gaining there meat that their bellies would fill
Fast from the lands where their prey they would kill.
Quick to their stations the thieves do now fly
Stirring the ships with a strength that was spry.

Turning to shore in the hopes they would feast
Yearning that quickly some game they would meet.
Closer they edged to the bank of the land
Knowing not Osage in the shadows do stand.
Simply yet yearning for beast they could track
Ready for neither the war or the wrack

Braves would yet rain on the heads of the thieves
Such that there hopes and their plans it would grieve.
Drawing a plank they now readied themselves
Deep in the forest they sought to now delve.
Gaining for desire that briefly had sought
Quest that by greed and their lust had been wrought.

Down from the ships they incautiously tread
Sensing no danger and feeling no dread.
Slowly the men from the vessel did strow
Knowing not death was the end of their goals.
Motioning caution the chief did now wait
Yielding not self to an easier bait.

Waiting till all had been gathered and close
Knowing that's easiest way they'll be poached.
Chief did now order the arrows and slings
Quick so that death on their foes it would bring.
Sudden the air with a whistling sang
Sounding as strings on their bows did now twang.

Sieged were the pirates by force that's unknown
Tearing asunder the plans they had honed.
Darting for trees the thieves did now hide
Hoping that cover would keep them alive.
Still in the shadows the braves did now seek
Fury on head of their foes to yet wreak.

Shelter and hold for the sailors not found
Men by their foes on all sides had been bound
Falling before them not knowing the cause
Great in confusion the pirates now paused.
Gathering wits that their surprise had stole
Knowing their losing their plans and their gold.

Thieves did now draw and on shadows they shot
Hoping to kill who this chaos had wrought.
Loud was the thunder and crack that did rise
Smoke from the fire now clouded their eyes.
Looking at woods not a soul had been found
After the blast of their rifles had sound.

Calmness and quiet did fill in the air
Still to now move not a one of them dared.
Moment that felt like a year in its length
Fell and yet drove them to sanities brink.
One of the thieves from his post did now stand
Finding their foes was the traitor's own plan.

Walking through growth he now felt he was safe
Sure that attack of their foes had abate.
Quickly he motioned and bid them to come
Fast from their stations they sprung now and run.
Soon as they reached him though hopes did yet fall
Down he now slumped to the ground he did fall.

Arrow in back of their scout had been plant
Causing their hope to now dwindle so scant.
Trick had yet lured them far from their hold
Osage had fooled them with trap that was bold.
Sudden a screeching through air was now heard
Fear in the hearts of the thieves was now spurred.

Up from the bushes the braves did now spring
Striking their foes with their axes and slings.
Out in the open from places they hid
Pirates to hands of the braves had been give.
Powder was wasted and shot had been blast
Plan of the Osage in motion was cast.

Quickly they rally forgetting not prize
Thieves had yet won with their cunning and lies.
Traitors now strove with the Osage who fought
Great with a might that the wilderness wrought.
Still they did fight with their foes in those woods
Battling hard though they hardly withstood.

Wrath of their braves that was brought on their head
Yielding not heart to the deepest of dread.
Ferocious like beast the pirates now fought
Knowing their lives were the thing that was sought
Spurred them to struggle with braves in the fight
Trying their best and not sparing their might.

Still were their efforts in deepest of vain
Earning them only what's greatest of pain.
Braves had been cunning in making this war
Stalking their foe and using their lore
Earned in the forest through many an age
Helping them win in this battle that raged.

Fiercely they fought as the pirates now died
Down at the side of the river they're lied.
Backwards and forwards the bands did now pull
Shouting and crying in manner that's cruel.
Long was the strife they did wage on shore
Striving so great in the battle like chore

Long till the tides of the day did yet turn
Slowly the will of the pirates was spurned.
Beating them back with a cry that was fierce
Loud so that hearts of the thieves it did pierced.
Chief was now charging and making his way
Down on the thieves to now put them in grave.

Laying them low with his axe and his spear
Dulling their courage inspiring fear.
Many before him now fell at his feet
Down so that final of fates they would meet.
Matched and exceeded the sailors now fall
Turning the chieftain does issue his call.

Bidding the brave to now come to his side
Strewn with bodies of rebels now lied.
Hasty they came and their foes they did meet
Righting there many and gallant a feat.
Backwards their driven with no hope of return
Watching as all of their plans did now burn.

Finally seeing that battle was lost
Witnessing all that his greed had yet cost.
Diable did slip from the rest to the hull
Down does he walk to a prison that's full.
Seeing him Adriene now raced through the mass
Running through chaos so limber and fast.

Hoping that maiden does make it in time
Quick before lover the rebel does find.
Hasty on plank of the ship she now sped
Up to the vessel with heart that's of dread.
Pumping her legs with quickest of haste
Fast so no time does the maiden now waste.

Catching the villain before he arrives
Down where he's kept those who're faithful deprived.
Drawing her sword she did ready herself
Fighting again for her lover as help.
Villain did turn and the maiden he saw
Facing his foe does he scimitar draws.

Seeing again he the servant now meets
Nemesis maiden does quickly now greet.

"Petite Jean you wretched cur
Come again to foil plans
Trial great I see you spurred
Brought on head of rebel man.

All my plans so careful laid
Down in ruin lie at feet
Cabin boy's the one I blame
Jean this horrid fate did wreak.

Still my ransom great I'll claim
Back from hands of wretched man
Deaths the only price I'll deign
Brought to man who current stands

Head of vessel mighty ship.
Soon the prince's throat I'll slice
Ending well this wretched trip
Dying gasp my final price."

Heading not words the maiden did stand
Feeling no fear she now kept what was plan.

"Your other plans at first this man did foil
When ship you sought for which the crew had toiled.
Again you stand with only sword to fight
This boy who former stayed your hand and might.

With saber drawn I stopped the theft of ship,
And stayed your schemes from ending fast our trip.
What makes you think this course of action ends
With diff'rent plot than man did former fend.

A better match is cabin boy with blade
Now yield yourself or deep in grave be laid."

Still was the villain so cunning and vile
Striking on plan that was loathsome with wile.
Knowing how first he had fell to her blade
Back when a challenge that peasant had made.
Quick he did search for and easier path
Using his mind to now temper his wrath.

Grabbing some wreckage with hand he did throw
Splintering dust at the eyes of his foe.
Taken aback by tactic he used
Maiden was stunned by the act and confused.
Suddenly stinging in side she did feel
Piercing and sharp that did cause her to reel.

Quick from the pain did the peasant now leap
Knowing that blow had the sailor yet reaped.
Turning in haste to now clear her own eyes
Reeling and taken by villain's surprise.
Wiping her face she again does now stand
Fighting to alter the villain's own plan.

Quickly to traitor the maiden now turns
Hoping that still his attack she may spurn.
Clashing with saber like first when they fought
Back when a victory his sentence had bought.
Sparking of blades were yet filling the air
Shouting of duo who fate did now dare.

Better was peasant in art of the blade
Still had a wound in her side yet been made.
Stealing from maiden her speed and her skill
Needed that peasant the rebel may kill.
Many the times she was swatted aside
Cause by the pain that was searing in side.

Driving her back with his hammering clash
Light from the sun on his sword did now flash.
Making the maiden retreat from his wrath
Stumbling on things that were laid in her path.
Righting herself she again did now rise
Daring to fight though she's hurting in side.

Clashing and sparks from their weapons now rang
Beating a song that a warcry now sang.
Still he was pompous as ever before
Slowly through patience his breath was now wore
Ragged by all of the blows he had made
Trying to send her to deepest of grave.

Vigor of man had been stolen by sins
Made when he vessel from captain did rend.
Giving the maiden a chance to now think
Still she did own not the health or the strength
Needed to slay him who fought as her foe
Great though the thought did yet give her a woe.

Sudden an idea to maiden occurred
Back from his swatting the peasant now stirred.
Drawing him closer like baiting a trap
Hoping that creature she soon may yet catch.
Back she did fall from the man with the blade
Up to the helm where his doom would be made.

Following maiden the rebel now came
Slashes with scimitar the cretin now deigned.
Hammering down on the foe who was hurt
Caring not thing was a villainous work.
Climbing the steps he now followed her trail
Sure in his plan not thinking he'll fail.

Rising to meet her where maiden now stands
Weakened by villains own cunning and plan.
Looking he saw her so weak and so frail
Owning a form that is starting to fail.
Taunting he come with his saber he raps
Menacing railing of ship he does tap.

Sudden with jerk she does grab at the wheel
Causing the boom of the ship to now reel.
Striking his head and yet sending him down
Laying him low as he moans on the ground.
Rushing the scimitar maiden does kick
Stealing from villain a hope for a trick.

Over the fellow the maiden now stands
Full in the glory of virtuous plan.

"I bid you speak your peace before I strike,
And send my foe to depths of final night.
For sure some peace at end you need to make
To try and change your course or alter fate."

Glaring the villain now smirks at her words
Even in death his own heart was not spurred.

"Least of men was greatest foe
Still, I yield not path I took
Grant me quick my final woe
Know my sins I've ne'er forsook.

Heed your valor high and great
Thrust you blade and end my ways
Choose I free but dying fate.
Peace of man's already made."

Maiden now thrust her own blade in his chest
Killing the man she now twice had yet best.
Pinning him down to the ground where he laid
Deep in the sins that the sailor had made.
Dropping to deck once the deed had been done
Knowing that course of this action was run.

Finally rising she upward did stand
Aiding the prince as she first had yet planned.
Turning to hull of the ship she now flies
Finding the crewman in shackles there lied.
