Canto XX: The Aid of the Osage.

Read in Landscape

Back to the land of Osage she did go
Back to the place where her allies abode.
Hoping that tribe would yet aid her in war
Quick so that ship from their hands may be tore
Far from the grasp of the thieves who had fought
Working so hurt on their head could be wrought.

Tracing their path from the shores of their home
Over the seas had these thieves now yet roamed.
Seeking their hurt at the soonest of chance
Hoping that wealth would their plunder yet grant.
Quick did they fall on the head of their foes
Granting the sailors what was greatest of woe.

Up on the helm of the ship they now stayed
Gaining the priv'ledge by plan they had made.
Riotous sure was the acts they now bid
Trouble was thing that to sailors they give.
Great would be hurt that on head they would reap
Vengeance for foiling their previous feat.

Maiden's heart was in greatest of woe
Wracked by those fears that were stoked by her foes.
Adriene though strove at a hope that's so slim
Lo! though its light be yet quivering dim
Running through forest at the quickest of pace
Fast to her allies did the maiden now race.

Great was the trek that the peasant did take
All for the prince who was lover's own sake.
Over the hills through the valleys she goes
Facing on way what were many a woe.
Heat of the day and coldness of night.
Rays that do batter and winds that do bite

Maiden did brave though their forces were great
Bidding to peasant what was death as her fate.
Seldom she rested and seldom she ate
Hoping to reach them before it's to late.
Trapping her meat and scavenging her grain
Eating so little though her hunger did pain

Maiden who strove with purest intent
All of her will on this journey was bent.
Walking though battered, blistered, and sore
Still her own mission in heart she now bore.
Knowing that chance does alone on her rest
Solely in maid were their lives now invest.

Deep in the woods she did fear now she's lost
Mourning the price that this folly had cost.
Still she pressed and her effort she gave
Knowing mistake might yet lead to the grave.
Stumbling she went as her senses were robbed
Knowing not place as she onward did trod.

Body remembered what mind had forgot
Taking her down to the place she had sought.
Walking and stumbling her feet did now bleed
Still to her shelter the maiden did speed.
Delirious mumbling and mad in her grief
Long did she search for the Osagen chief.

Sudden the beating of drums were then heard
Fast from her stupor the maiden was spurred.
Onward she pressed to the sound of the drum
Hearing the beat as they beckoning thrummed.
Hastening gait she now started to stride
Fast to the place where the Osage abide.

Hoping to self she'll arrive not too late
Stressing and striving with furious gait.
Trees did now break and glade she did see
Place that was hidden so deep in the trees.
Finally at village the maiden arrived
Hoping that reprieve was found yet in time.

Inward she stumbled to place where they lived
Hoping that hands to her cause they would give.
Calling for help from the friends she had made
Back when in village the peasant had stayed.
People in village now turned in surprise
Seeing their friend who in hurt did now lie.

Over to peasant the villagers ran
Helping so upward the peasant could stand.
Cries were now heard through whole of the place
Out to the maid did now more of them race.
Wanting to know what was cause of her pain
Seeking so knowledge the tribesmen may gain.

Hearing the roar in his tent was the chief
Wondering great what was causing this grief.
Over to council the man did now gaze
Questioning eyebrow, the king did now raise.
Up he did stand and the plotting he broke
Chief of the tribesmen now hastily spoke.

"Let us yet see what is cause of this thing
Great that so loud a commotion it brings.
Come now this happening council will greet
Challenge it brings to the Osage we'll meet"

Out of his tent did the chief now yet come
Talking in voice that had sounded like drum

"Tell me my people what thing is yet brought
Great that this roar of the crowd it has wrought.
Show us so leaders of people may know
Thing that has come to now dwell in abode
Made by our ancestors deep in their days
Long though those men do yet lie in their grave,

Still we will fight in a fury so great
Keeping what forebear did leave as our fate."

Quickly to Jean was the chieftain now led
Over to maiden the prince was now sped.
Taken by hand to the sight he was brought
Seeing what journey through forest had wrought
Man did now start in the deepest surprise
Down when on maiden he laid his own eyes.

Trembling and pale from the trek that was long
Still it did show that the peasant was strong.
Shocked the Chieftain did lower to ground
Talking to servant that village had found.
Asking what fortunes befell them that day
Hoping that answers not lying in grave.

"Speak to me friend and yet tell me your cause
Heed to my question and talk with no pause.
Allies may help you if aid you do seek
Ask of us favor so council may meet.
Taking your side so that help may be gave
Saving your fate from the deepest of grave."

Speaking she told him misfortunes so great
Telling of man who had warped then their fate.
Asking the chief to yet lend her his arms
Quick so that rebel and traitor she'll harm.

"On course of journey took from land that's home
When men did come on ships and set to roam
The ocean great in hopes to find this land
On board our ship was one who frustrates plans.

He turned the crew against the captain's will,
And bid that men their lust and hunger fill.
Ignoring task that prince and leader bid
So work they promised men did never give.

He bid his time till strength of captain waned
So ship of lord the man could easy claim.
But servant drove the man from thing he sought
And down on head of villain woe was brought.

So long I thought no harm from hand be made
For fellow dwelt in prison deep like grave,
But present time has made my hope to fail
For fiend with pirate crew does current sail.

He took our ship by cannon blast he made
With many lives we sailors surely paid.
In prisons deep the rest of men do lie
Their time till rescue sailors surely bide

But serf escaped and ran with little pause
To plead to chief that man might hear our cause.
I bid you please to rescue rest of crew
From prison deep where rest of men do stew.

With favor great I ask you lend your skill
So man so vile this servant sure may kill."

Hearing her purpose the chieftain did nod
Knowing not whether to harken to cause.
Lives of his people this effort might claim
Sure if the favor she asked he does deign.
Drawing on high to the maiden he spoke
Careful in speech so his word was not broke.

"Council we elders shall hold in our tent
Speaking on plight of the ship that was wrent
Far from the hand of my servant and friend
Choice that is good we will make in the end."

Rising he ordered some food and a bed
Come to the maiden who looked as though dead.
Fast she was raised from the ground where she lied
Over to tent was the maiden's now guide.
Led to a place where she down may yet lay
Resting from journey that maiden had made.

After this action a council he called
Gathering warriors in tent one and all.
Asking that council be given by men
Quick so that aid to the conquered they'll send.

"Man to this village a favor did lend
Great though his freedom from hand had been rend.
Taken that day when his form had been lain
Down on the beach when attack we had feigned.
Still he did learn what was tongue we did speak
Talking our way so his message we meet.

Death for the man was intended by day
War from the sailors the servant did stay.
Keeping our village from harm that was wrought
Great when the sailors their fellow had sought.
Time has yet come when this debt can be paid
Back to the man in this tent where he lays.

Speak to your chieftain and tell me your peace
Long so the man may yet know what's his lease.
Lending our aid our yet staying our hand
Tell me so chieftain may make what is plan."

Loud was the clamor that question did make
Causing the braves to yet argue what's fate.
Some to the side of the maiden did hark
Others yet strayed to a separate part.
Long they did fight no consensus was held
Deep in the village where Osage did dwell.

Even in number and even in strength
Council that brought them to edge of the brink.
Long in the night did their talking now go
Deep in the tent where the men did abode.
Finally up to the chief they did turn
Hoping his answer their fighting might spurn.

Only the king of the Osage could say
Whether the tribe would this war now yet wage.
Quite for moment in silence he thought
Stillness his pause to the braves had now brought.
Sudden he spoke with a voice that was grave
Bidding his will to the council and braves.

"First when beholding the sailors in land
Born on their ship from the feintest of strand.
Deep in my heart did a dread I then felt
Knowing a fate that was horrid we're dealt.
Far from our lands will our people be turned
Hated and feared will our tribe then be spurned.

Humiliation great will our people then find
Heaped on our head by the servant's own kind.
Hoping that man may forestall what was fate
Hatched I a plan in the hopes it'd abate.
Taking their allies to leverage their kin
Hoping that back on the seas they would send.

Leaving our land and the place where we dwell
Distant in place that is far they'll be held.
Fate of our people at present be set
Long though our hope would your chief yet abet.
Fate I would fight if I thought this would yield
Favor to Osage who's harmed by this deal.

Lo! Though no help will be grant for that day
People with life and with blood will yet pay.
Think not my friends on this thing we are led
Far in the future that we all now must dread.
Pride can be taken but honor's still hold
Only for men who are brave and yet bold.

Harken we will to the maiden's own words
Fast to the aid of the prince we'll be spurred."

Silence now fell on the whole of the tribe
Thinking on loss of the home they abide.
Sadness did dwell in the depths of their heart
Knowing that soon from this land they'll depart.
Wondering great at the cause of this fate
Future that all who were gathered did hate.

Still to the words of the chieftain they heed
Willing themselves to an honorable deed.
Started they talking on war they would rage
Readying self for a battle and rage.
Brought on the head of that greatest of foes
Man who on vessel did current abode.

Long they did talk and a plan they did hatch
Hoping that fury of traitor he'll match.
Calling their ally they told then their plan
Speaking of ways to yet strengthen their hand.
Finally, their friend had arrived in the tent
After the night in their council they spent.

Telling the maiden of plans they had hatched
Hoping that cunning with fury they'll match.
Maiden now nodded when hearing them speak
Knowing it's best though the chances were meek.
