Canto XVII: The War.
Read in Landscape
Raging the captain now readied his men
Out from the vessel his scouts he did send.
Searching the woods in the hopes he would find
Place where his sailors were taken in binds.
Gathering forces and readying arms
Searching for foes and intending them harm.
Many a week had now passed since the raid
Little a word of his friend had been gave.
Restless his pacing and weary his heart
Hoping for day that the rescue would start.
Finally, men did approach with some news
Telling them all of the men they had slew.
Speaking how Jean had yet saved them from harm
Fighting the foes who had raised the alarm.
Gathering men to his quarters he took
Asking the sailors for knowledge he sook.
Wanting to know what's the state of his friend
Long who had helped him his sickness to mend.
Quickly they told him of all they had saw
Straining so all of their story's recalled.
Telling the prince what's the lay of the land
Helping the noble develop a plan.
Soon he was ready to storm to that place
Readying men did the noble now race.
Gathering sailors and gathering guns
Quickly through depths of the forest they run.
Hasty but silent through the paths they do creep
Searching for sign of the village they seek
Daring not breath or to ponder their cause
Daring not rest or to even yet pause
Knowing that briefest of moments do count
Running with fear in the greatest amounts.
Fearing that chieftain will Jean now yet hate
Casting him down to a gruesomest fate.
Setting the man as a warning to all
For heeding not judgements and obeying not calls
Born by the chieftain whose will was yet law
Over the heads of the tribesman and all
Set in that village where warriors do hide
Deep in the forest where Osage abide.
Headed the sailor to place they escaped
Hoping that war on the foes they would make.
Cannons where towed and their guns had been packed
None of their war-making tools did they lack.
Deeper and deeper the footfalls did strike
Timed with their heart whose own beating had spiked.
Winding the paths with a fury they walk
Silent and dread not one daring to talk.
Further in woods was the dwelling now found
Place where the friend of the captain was bound.
Gathering sailors the noble now went
Down to the place that the prisoners had sent
Ready for battle and ready for wrack
Ready that dwellings of Osage he'll sack.
Seeing him coming an alarm was then raised
Ready the warriors of village were made.
Standing they all did now face to the foe
Ready to bring on those fellows a woe.
Horn was then sounded and war was then made.
Standards of battle in air had been raised.
Great do the warriors now fighting yet vie
Wielding their swords so their foes will soon die.
Brave were the Osage who fought with their strength
Striving with sailors at greatest of lengths.
Still though no spear or a sling can yet match
Cannons and guns that the captain dispatched
Least not in open where braves they could spy
Fearsome with painting and valiant cries.
Still were the tides yet against them from start
Though they were fighting with fiercest of heart.
Slowly the ground to invaders they lose
Bodies of braves by their fire was bruised.
Quickly they're driven with the greatest of haste
Back from their foes they now fled from the waste.
Fearing that end had now found them and brought
Sailors to village as friend they now sought.
Knowing not way that they'll hinder the path
Blazed by the sailors in greatest of wrath.
Out from their midst then did Jean now appear
Standing with courage and showing no fear.
Knowing that wrath was not fate that was set
Setting herself so that peace she abets.
Over to chieftain in heat of the war
Maiden through bullets and ricochets tore.
Speaking to man who had sentenced her doom
Bidding that maiden be laid in a tomb
Punishment gave when the camp she escaped
Aiding her fellows in fighting their fate.
Landing beside him she hasty then spoke
Telling him way that the warring be broke.
"I bid the king a flag of white to heft
That Osage people claim not early death.
My folk do know the thing this symbol means,
And end to war this banner raised will bring."
Knowing that words she had spoken aren't vain
Chief does now harken to maiden's own claim.
Cutting a hide he did raise what was sheet
High on a stick so that vision it greets.
Soon as it's raised the battle does stop.
Blazing has halted but arms are not dropped.
Out of the mass does the captain now come
Speaking in voice that did beat like a drum.
Bidding that folk would yet proffer them peace
Soon as they gave to his mind what was ease
Bidding them show him the sailor they held
Bringing him out from the place where they dwelled.
"I do ask you to show me my friend who's whole and unharmed
That he out from your midst may yet come and his fellows to greet
So his sight may yet ease what is greatest of grief and alarm
So that servant who's lost may the rest of us witness and meet."
Maiden conveyed what the captain did say
Hoping that chieftain would harken to way.
Letting her show them that maid was not harmed
Easing their worry and ceasing alarm.
Chief then did nod at the words she had gave
Knowing that only this choice could be made.
Nodding she rose and from midst did now show
Walking to sailors from warrior's abode.
Knowing that only her presence could cease
Fury of men so their hearts would then ease.
Captain now paused at the sight he beheld
Friend who his deepest of trust had now held.
"I thank you prince for finding man
By making great and warring plans
To search me out and bring me home
From place the great Osage do roam.
For many men their friends would leave
Though act would make their hearts to grieve.
Believing little proof, they claim
That all were dead they'd surely deign.
But further violence made by prince is wrong
Though proving self and arms so great and strong.
No harm befell your friends these men did take
Nor honor held for foes this tribe did break.
In heart I know that prince is fair,
And harming lot he'd never dare."
Slowly the saber at side he did sheath
Knowing that words of his friend he should heed.
Back when he former had failed to then heard
Words that were righteous that his friend had then spurred
Down on that Island he'd found there his doom
Wound that had almost yet granted his tomb.
Also when maiden had bidden him stay
Down at her cottage where man had been laid.
Taking on life that was humble of serf
Striving in fields where he surely did work.
Prince had not headed the words she had spoke
Leaving he found that his vow had been broke.
Altered by quest he was honored to take
Out on the sea would this voyage he makes.
Great he regretted that choice in its time
Only what's sorrow the prince did here find.
Noble now knew that of others he needs
Words that will bid him to righteousness heed.
Prideful no more was the noble of France
Nodding he gave to his servant a chance.
Bidding him work for a peace that would last
Long till from shore of this place they had cast.
Turning he motions to rest of the crew
Asking no more on this day be yet slew.
Telling his servants to work what was planned
Reason before him the man does yet stand.
Turning in tongue of Osage she does cry
Bidding them peace that no more would yet die.
"My prince a peace does wish to make
To set aside our warring fate.
Would Chief of tribe yet come to speak
That man may trade in ways and reap.
What's good for one that other owns
So greatest crafts to each be loaned."
Out from their cover the chief does now stand
Playing his part in the maiden's own plan.
Coming to meet what was foe in their glade
Hoping that peace from this trial be made.
Setting the pair to the other did talk
Neither now willing from table to balk.
Aided by Jean who can speak for the pair
Helping them reach an agreement that's fair.
Telling the other what former did say
Helping the foundations of peace to yet lay.
Long was a conference held at that time
Hoping some measure of knowing they'll find.
Suspicion slowly though gave with this time
Helping with contract that both would yet bind.
Finally, agreement by pair had been made
Each to others own word was now gave.
Chieftain now promised to aid them with ship
Granting them passage they'll take on the trip.
