Canto XIX: The Attack
Read in Landscape.
Back to the voyage the men now return
Back to their labor that long they had spurn
Leaving their foe who an ally became
Back when their crewman who's Jean they did claim.
On they now go to the land that was good
Place where the sovereign had bid they be stood.
Up on the ship they now file from the shore
Quick from their leisure the sailors are tore.
Bidding to Osage what's peace as they left
Soon would their anchors from river be heft
Up on to deck and the sails would be raised
High to their stations so voyage be made.
Readying ship they did leave from that place
Setting to river in the quickest of haste.
Choosing what stream as their course they would take
Forward with grant of the king as their fate.
Out from the shoreline they quickly now go
Sailing the vessel on which they abode.
Duty returns them to adventurous chore
Long had the sailors from homeland yet bore.
Finding their places on ship once again
Striving so vessel through waters was send.
Slowly through practice their skills do return
Gaining again what was knowledge they spurned.
Back when the crewman as prisoners were took
Long for their fellows the others had sook.
All was now well yet again on the ship
Letting the sailors return to their trip.
Quickly their habits reforged by their craft
Help them to sail on this mightiest raft.
Labor is hard and the days they are long
Still do they work with a will that is strong.
Knowing that grant of the king does approach
Filling their hearts with a longing and hope.
Causing a vigor to hold in their heart
Making them strive in their role and their part.
Gaining again what was ground that was lost
Covering quick what misadventure had cost.
Steady in labor they turn now their head
Down on their work so that hasty their sped.
Hoping no break yet again would be made
Pausing the journey that sailors had made.
Longer than planned had this voyage now took
Great since the days that their homelands forsook.
Wanting with all of their heart to return
Back to the rest that they all had yet earned.
Men did now hasten to the task that's at hand
Fast to return was the whole of their plan.
Longing for families left in their home
Back when they set to the seas to then roam.
Long were the hours at which they now strove
Hoping the effort their venture would goad.
Helping them tarry not longer in land
Moment beyond what was bidden and planned.
Almost a week had now passed for the crew
Slowly as closer to goal they now drew.
Charting their course to the lands of the king
Hoping that fortune their hardships would bring.
Sudden behind them a figure was saw
Growing in size with its mast that were tall.
Slowly does suspicion stir in their hearts
Knowing in depths who would search in these parts...
Men who had plagued them for length of their trip
Wielding their weapons harassing their ship.
Greater it grew in its size as it came
Over to vessel their place to yet claim.
Foolish they paused not believing their luck
Ship yet again by their foes would be struck.
Knowing the men did forbear in their dread
Hasty to railing the maiden now sped
Crying a challenge to ship as it came
Ordering allegiance of vessel to claim.
"What country claims the men who come our way
Now prove your right to course your vessel's laid!
By showing marks on sail to stake your claim
So, men may know what nation sailors deign!
Or ready selves to meet this vessel's wrath
To thieves we'll yield not right to charted path!"
Long was the pause as no words did yet come
Tension was building and all were now dumb
Waiting for vessel to show them it's marks
Hoping that answer would ease their own hearts.
Sudden with fury and haste that was crazed
Flags on the vessel were swiftly then raise.
Black were the sails of the ship that did close
Causing the hearts of the sailors to slow.
Dry were their mouths but wet were their heads
Sweating at sight that did fill them with dread.
Ship that had plagued them for journey so long
Stood now with banners so mighty and strong.
Knowing that foes had now found them again
Soon with they're swords and their cannons they'll fend
Pirates who came with a greed that was vile
Bearing their lust that were wicked and wild.
Men did now panic at sight they had seen
Vision of greed that was great and so keen.
Over to side they did run to now see
Men who did come for a murderous spree.
Gazing from deck they now look at their foes
People who sought their own heartache and woe.
Angry as ever with ravenous face
Born from a hatred that's great and debased.
Staring through glass they did look at the thieves
Men who would see that they're dead and bereaved.
Loudly the sailors do chatter at thing
Speaking of fear that the vessel does bring.
Stricken with dread at the sight they had beheld
Men who had come with intentions so fell.
Up to the railing does Adriene stride
Looking at ship where the fiends did abide.
Grasping the glass she now started to gaze
Over at vessel where sorrow was laid.
Quick through the glass did Adriene spy
Men who for vessel had previously vied.
Sudden a gasp from her lips did escape
Seeing on ship what's unlikeliest fate.
Man who had sorrows so callously wrought
Long for the journey on which he was brought.
Diable at head of this ship did now stand
Leading those merciless pirates as band.
Freed from his shackles that maiden did fit
Tethered no longer in depths of that pit.
Down where she left him when first had he tried
Ship from the hand of the captain to pry.
Stirring with words a mutiny great
Earning for self that end as a fate.
Face of the man was now twisted with rage
Great as the war that he sought to now wage.
Down on the head of his foes he would bear
Wrath that's so great not a man would yet dare
Turning his will or questioning cause
Onward they strove with no fear or a pause.
Heart of the maiden now balled in a pit
Stirring her dread to a grandiose fit.
Wondering servant now gazed at their foe
Struck at the knowledge that sight had bestowed.
Man who had hurt them for the length of this trip
Stood as the captain of enemy ship.
Questioning shook through the maiden's own mind
Looking at man she had placed in those binds.
Leaving him locked in a prison so deep
Down in a stony abode as his keep.
Longing that sentence of man should yet last
All of his days in that prison he's cast.
Still, he now stood at the brink of their ship
Trying with all of his might to now rip
Far from the grasp of her captain and lord
Vessel that pirates were trying to board.
Taking their goods and their lives in their wake
Seeking to put on them grimmest of fate.
Long she then stood in the stillest of pose
Numbering all of their trials and woes.
Brought by this man with a rebellious mind
Seeking what mischief that villain may find.
Quick she did break from her gazing and shook
Knowing that action must hasty be took.
Quick from the masses did Adriene turn.
Grasping the railing on side of the stern.
Racing through masses to captain's abode
Telling him troubles that rebel did goad.
Bursting through doors of the cabin she speaks
Telling her lord of the danger they wreak.
Asking him rise to now lead them in charge
Helping defend him and save his own barge.
Grabbing his saber to door he does fly
Crashing to deck with a strength that is spry.
Ordering men so to stations they go
Hoping his actions a victory bodes.
Off to their stations they fly with a speed
Quick to the words of the captain they heed.
Knowing that all of their lives may be saved
Fast from the hand of a watery grave
Only by fighting with all of their strength
Bringing their foes to edge of the brink.
Still, they were weaker than first when they fought
Fact that the trials of voyage had wrought.
Many the fellows on journey who came
Watery deep as their grave do now claim.
Weaker were men of the mighty La Chair
Tole had been taken by dangers they dared.
Doubt had now crept into depths of their mind
Stilling their forms like invisible binds.
Shuddering deep at this dread they would face
Ship of their foes was now setting the pace.
Siding to ship as its cannons it bared
Flashing with thunderous deafening blare.
Suddenly shock through the ship had been felt
Knowing that damage from canons was dealt
Chavet did now ordered them fire return
Quick so that will of the pirates was spurn.
Back and then forth their volleys they send
Striving so life of the other they'll end.
Caring not cost of the battle they waged
Firing of powder did brightly now blaze.
Filling the air with a haze and a smoke
Adding to fear that already did choke
Men who were fighting to stay yet alive
Hoping that longer in world they'll abide.
Long was this strife that was waged by the pair
Fighting with all the strength they could bear.
Cannons and muskets now blazing at side
Hoping that will of the other's defied
Great was the sound on the length of stream
Loud do the sounding of cannons then ring.
Adriene there stood with no fear in her heart
Ready to battle with Diable from start.
Pacing the ship with a rage that's inflamed
Hoping that life of the villain she'll claim.
Sudden by canon the ship was then wracked
Sounding aloud with a thunderous clap.
Sending her over the edge of the rail
Down to the waters where maiden did flail.
Gaining her bearings she righted herself
Struggling to shore with her skill and her health.
Gazing at battle that still did yet rage
Great with a treason and hate it was waged.
Hooks where then thrown to the side of their ship
Dragging them close to brink with a rip.
Over the gap did the pirates now pour
Same as they did in the time that's before.
Prince did try once again to then keep
Ship in his hand from the pirate's own reach.
Fighting with saber and skill that's unmatched
Quickly the pirates that noble dispatched
Striking with edge and then cutting them down
Working with fury by conscience unbound.
Onward the prince did now force with this fight
Bearing on pirates with whole of his might.
Hoping that effort may drive them from deck
Forcing them far from the place of the wreck.
Diable then came with a guileful grin.
One of a man that was sure in his sin.
Knowing his plan would yet put him to waste.
Pistol he drew in the greatest of haste.
Sudden she saw then her lover did fall
Down to the ground with a furious call.
Holding his shoulder that Diable had shot
Knowing that wickedest actions he wrought.
Sudden the board of their vessel was filled
Full of the sailors that pirates had killed.
Fighting now stopped on the deck of the ship
All did now turn to where sound had yet ripped.
Gazing at captain who laid on the ground
Clutching his wound was the noble now found.
Trying to staunch what was flow of his blood
Little it helped though in stopping the flood.
Men on the deck did now pause when they saw
Loss of their hope and what's also their cause.
Slowly to pirates they render their arms
Knowing that only what's greatest of harm
Done by the hands of the captors who claim
Ship, would be wrecked if their weapons aren't deigned.
Slowly they're bound by the men on the deck
Guided to prison in bowels of the wreck.
Diable now stood with a victorious air
Challenge from all did the traitor now dare.
Knowing no man could now stop what was wrath
Changing his course or yet altering path.
Shouting he ordered his will to be made
Knowing that fealty the others would pay.
Pacing the deck like a wolf he did prowl
Knowing he's master of all on the bowel.
Sudden the maiden now sees that the prince
Ask that the traitor does render defense.
Pausing the rebel to noble now spoke
Heeding not vow that he already broke.
Long did they speak and a grin he did bear
Evil and great with a tyrannical air.
Straining she failed to then know what was said
Still was her love now yet spared from the dead.
Sitting she pondered what action to take.
Wondering hard on what plan she could make.
Finally turning to land that they left
Hoping that plot she conspired was deft.
