Canto XIII: The Harrowing of Tortuga

Read in Landscape

Into the city maiden deftly stole
To find the prince what peasant held as goal.
With hasty step she walks and scans the crowd
That gather close and issue roar so loud.

Yet still she walks and through the masses pressed
To find her love now knowing act's for best.
For long she wandered vilest place with cause
Forgoing all that normal gave her pause.

Uncomely acts on either side abound
No righteous thing in all this place is found.
It's made for merely hiding vice in dark
So all who come to hidden lust may hark.

But maid to neither side would give her way,
Or far from mission Saint had ask would stray.
Though fear of place did grip the servant's heart
Still forward went the maid to savior's part.

So steady made the maiden's quickened breath
Though walking through a place that smelled like death.
Before her servant held a vision deep in mind
Of prince that serf was sent to place to find.

Focusing heart on finding prince in street
Still hoping quick that man the maid would meet.
For long she walked though hating place she's in
That serves for little more than din of sin.

Through wretched alleys filled with awful smells
Where many lechers nightly ever dwelled
She pushed yet forward looking over crowds
To try and find the noble great and proud,

But lo the ways she took did show no trail.
For all the paths she walks do quickly fail
To show a sign or mark for man she searched
So still yet onward the maiden hasty lurched.

For many hours the isle maiden roamed
In hopes that sins of love she sure atones.
Reviling much the sights she saw on street
With pity great for all the men she meets,

But never turned she back from task she's gave
Though finding love now felt like robbing grave.
For few in place did hold a life in eyes,
And maiden knew themselves they sure despised.

Her heart did beat at every sight she saw
That spoke of place that's lacking any laws.
Surprised by violent things that dwell in place,
And all the broken lives and promise faced.

But ever onward the maiden hasty pressed
Her will was stoked and made at God's behest.
To find the prince wherever man now stayed
So quick from danger man be hasty saved.

With bravest heart she fights her great despair
That prince some dread and horrid trial dared.
Thus losing life before the nobles found
In place where many sordid things abound.

But finally relieved the maiden fair does spy
The prince, alone by self the noble hides.
Here fearing things that rest of crew may say
If knowing prince so far from sins had stayed.

From wicked deeds he's snuck as though in wrong,
And owns no will or manner sure and strong.
So maiden drew herself on up and high
Approaching man that far from maiden lied.

With angry gait the maiden draws yet nigh
For will of prince the peasant sure defied.
There speaking peace thus telling strife he caused
Forgoing all that prince had set as laws.

"In face of death you bravely stood
To draw your sword for right and good,
And save your ship along with crew
By fighting thieves you deftly slew.

And many dangers noble faced
While bearing great unyielding grace.
To brave the wind and also waves
With steady heart that's very brave.

But threat of laughter turned aside your heart,
And bid the prince to play a cowards part!
Like wretched cur you creep to hide your shame
Though vile acts the noble fails to claim.

But still I bore an oath I'll fill
To serve the prince and honor deal."

Then noble glared at peasant red in face,
And lashed his tongue to answer quick in haste.
For deepest shame he sought to quick explain
To save himself from all of conscience pain.

"I have stuck to my vows while I also did save my own face
You've mistaken your folly for courage and their respect you've lost.
For you charged into snare with an egregious rashness and haste,

And with station and respect you've paid with your pride as the cost.
So to noble no lecture do give or a word for my deeds
For the whole of the crew with your act you have hastened and crossed,

And to ruin would your decision rash and so hasty yet lead.
To a serf I'll not answer for actions I thought were for best
You do know not what leadership calls for, it caution does heed

I was prudent in act when allowing them go at behest.
Now they'll work and they'll strive when to ship they're returned
From their excursion granted to lend to them frivolous rest.

And their loyalty by choice that I've made has been garnered and earned.
For they'll know I was fair in my judgement and good in my cause
For your sake should your pride and your foolishness be quickly yet spurned

So that hate of your fellows on ship be yet broken and paused."

And hearing words the peasant gritted teeth
Refusing glance so eyes of prince she'll meet.
For even standing face to face he seeks
To save his pride though reason found was meek.

But words of Saint did give a stoic heart
His story told did help her play her part.
For maiden knew that danger man had warned
Would lay its siege on prince she former scorned.

So stuffing anger deep inside her soul
To help her ready self to play her role.
That man would quick be saved from wretched thing
Unknown to maid though terror fate did bring.

For longest time the pair now stood and stared
To answer other neither truly cared.
Then sudden maiden reached and grabbed his sleeve
In hopes that port the pair could swiftly leave.

She dragged man from crowd that sought their fill
Of sin along with cheapest earthly thrills.
In hopes that far from danger maid would take
The prince thus saving love from awful fate.

For long in silence pair did walk so glum
As rage had seized their heart and striken dumb
The two returning quick to mighty ship
Regretting deep the choice to make this trip.

But maid alone did know the purpose bore
Of current act how danger fast at heels now tore.
Not knowing place from which it surely came
If life of prince some foe now sought to claim.

So all about the pair the maid did glance
Not taking even slightest bit of chance,
And men on streets did part and make a way
Beholding glaring face the peasant made.

So ever near the ship they both now drew,
And fear in peasant's heart now lesser grew.
For surely danger dread had hasty past
Aside the maid her caution quick could cast.

But sudden coming forth the pair now spied
The pirates quick aboard the ship now lied.
Who sought to stealthy steal it deep in night
While men did go ashore and seek respite.

Now maiden knew herself she too had saved
When up to will of Saint she cause had gave.
For maid alone on ship would never keep
Though deep in battle serf before was steeped

The ship along from pirates sacking things
That crew did voyage great and hard did bring.
The men would surely overpower foe,
And grant on maid a deep and horrid woe.

Now dry the mouth of noble man and maid
To see the hand that fate had almost gave
To pair who stood and witnessed horrid sight
For both this thing would've brought a wretched plight.

Yet still they both did know the need to act
For loss of ship would ruin bring was fact.
Now shaking off their worry pair did ready selves
So fast aboard the ship they both may delve,

And fend the theft the pirates surely sought
Along with ruin act has surely brought.
They run to plank and upward climb it's steep
To fight so ship the prince and lover keep,

And pair did draw their swords to stop the theft
So crew of ship and goods aren't left bereft.
Aboard the vessel both now fly in rage
Preparing selves to mighty battle wage,

And thieves are caught without their guard
By pair who bring on head the greatest harm.
As back to back they stood on deck and fought,
And greatest pain the pair in battle wrought.

There long they waged their fight and strove to win
Though large the group the pair were task to fend
From taking boat and all the things on board
Still pair were winning mighty warring chore.

Their clashing swords with sparks and clamor fill
The air with sound though night was very still.
So all in city making joyous cheering cry
Did hear the clash where battle ground does lie.

At sound the whole of city drew yet nigh
As racket caused the folk to try and spy
What thing did cause the clamor great and bold,
And sought so sight the crowd might sure behold.

So near to port the thronging masses drew
At feet of boat where pair the pirates slew.
Till large the mass of men who stood at base,
And gazed on maid and man who fought in haste.

To keep the ship where pair did current live
That prince by king and country's surely give.
Now turning 'round the thieves behold the crowd
That gather close with shouts so great and loud.

For all who stood reviled the pirates' ways
For many friends these foes had sent to grave.
There all who saw the plot did angry shout
At men who current fought with pair in bout.

And hearing cries the thieves did turn their head
To gaze at jeers that filled their hearts with dread.
And seeing many men at base in port
The thieves now knew that all their plans were thwart.

They backward fall from task at which they're turned
Their former plan the pirates current spurned.
To side of ship, they run and climb in boats
Escaping swift through oceans' deadly moat.

They quickly fled lest slain by men on deck
To save their lives they leave behind the wreck.
In vict'ry great the pair now stood so high
With many bodies down at feet there lied.

And both do breathe a sigh of great relief
To see how act of maid had sure averted grief.
Then quick to ship the crew now hasty came
Now knowing boat the pirates almost claimed.

And quickly men did clamor hard to see
The pair on ship who strove to keep it free.
The vessel hurt by nightly pirate raid,
And deep in leg of captain wound was made.

But still this fate was better end than former thought
For greatest ruin by sin was almost brought.
But still in heart of maid a fear is found
For looking over foe by rage was bound.

His face was gruesome twist in awful sneer
That filled her heart with deep abiding fear.
Perhaps from sin the man by duty tore
Now great some awful anger deeply bore.

And deep in hand what Diable current held
A fiddle made for place they current dwelled.
Its form not kept or ever well was sheened
But still the maiden swore like gold it gleamed...
