Canto X: The Boarding.
Read in Landscape
So men prepared themselves to fight their foes
Who sought to bring on heads of crew a woe,
And gain through violent theft what labor gave
Thus sending sailing men on down to grave.
For surely many times these men and thieves
Had wracked and many sailors former grieved.
To make an act so bold as thing they do
For certain might the men did former prove,
And thought that thieves could easy claim the ship
That men had took on mighty sailing trip.
Thus fearing little failing task they sought
With aid of mighty weapons men had brought.
But fate of death the men would surely fight
Now aided well by captain's cunning might.
A man who surely trained in ways of war
As part of noble man's own princely chores.
For many tutors' hands his mind did mold
To make the man a warrior great and bold.
That sure could lead the sailors forth to war
So ship from hands of men's not hasty tore.
So all did heed the orders prince now gives
To follow captain only hope and bid
They have to stave the pirates off from ship
They're give by king to make this mighty trip.
That men might fight the thieves' own wretched siege
Thus saving selves from fate that's deeply grieved.
"To the cannons I order you men to now go and to fight,
And there load them with powder and pack in them shrapnel and steel.
There we'll send to them shots that will show them our might
So that attack abates when the blast of our fire they feel.
Now I bid you to fight for your lives, if not know they're forfeit
To the men who do seek for our goods and our vessel to steal.
And don't think that they'll leave you if things that they want they do get
For these pirates won't spare but a handful of men on this ship
They will only yet take from the crew who is best and the fit
From the rest of us all that we hold as yet dear will be ripped."
Now quick to war the men in haste did go
For all now knew they faced their deepest woe.
To stations sailors go to halt their will
In hopes that warring ways of thieves be stilled.
Preparing cannons, manning fortress well
For sailors feared the price if courage failed.
Then strapped their sabers tight on waist at side,
And deep in hearts their fears and doubts they hide.
Now counting cost they'll pay to fall yet short
How thieves will make of crew a gruesome sport,
And send them down to depths in wat'ry grave
Where many men who crossed their paths were laid.
Now waiting men did seek for orders gave
That captain makes to fend away their grave.
Not daring move or breathe a single breath
Like most who know they face uncertain death.
Now onward pirates' raft through waters ripped
Preparing assault launched on prince's ship
In hopes to take from crew their present bode
That sailing men do strive to fastly hold.
Then sudden ship with blacken sails does turn,
And hopes of prince's crew does try to spurn
By drawing cannons down on ship they live
In bid that greatest hurt the men may give.
Then captain orders ship to sideward bank
Exposing port along with cannoned flank.
The pair of vessels passed the others way
Then fired weapons loud and entered fray.
And wood did splinter much at sound of blast
As screams were cried by men then downward cast
Into the water sinking deep below
For down to death these sailors quickly go.
Then after pass a smoke did choke the air
From cannon blast that sailing men had dared
Along with many cries from men who wounds now bore
When flying shrapnel flesh and limbs had tore.
For moment long their heart did nearly fall
When seeing cost of heeding battles call,
But slowly smoke did clear from sailors' eyes
So state of pirates' crew they current spy.
There seeing brigands' wounds were just as grave
As ones the thieves to sailors former gave,
And hearts were stilled now seeing pirates harmed
By sailing men who first had felt alarm
At prospect brought by fighting men of war
Now sailors knew that flesh of thieves were tore
Like any man by steel and fire shot
Those pirates down to ground by wounds are brought.
So quickly men again did take their place
To turn about so foes those sailors faced.
In hopes that crew may rain on head of fiends
The wrath that acts of pirates often bring.
So once again they made their sweeping strike
To try and drive away the thieves through strife,
But only gain what hurt had first been brought
When former pass the sailing men had wrought.
Yet still in course they all proceed to fight,
And battle's waged through solely cannons might.
For neither side had dared to make a bid
To cross and other ship of foes to rid.
For many passes men this way then vied,
And neither won their current wills were tied.
To take or hold the pair now fiercely sought
La Chair the ship for which they current fought.
But ship of crew the pirates hungry need,
And fear is stoked by current battle's deeds.
They knew that present war they waged would fail
For cannon blast will ruin ship for sail,
And render vessels nought but splintered bits
That sinks to depths of oceans' wat'ry midst.
So thieving men do join and hatch a plan
To take the ship on which the sailors stand.
They gather ropes with boarding hooks of steel
To grasp opposing craft and inward reel
The other vessel great and very bold
So thieves may quickly claim that ship as hold.
Then turning 'bout at rail they lay in wait
To try and grant their foes a deadly fate.
With bated breath but steady hands they bide
Their time till foreign ship they fastly tie.
Now lurching ship does turn the other way
Again their galleon enters fighting fray,
And closer sailors' vessel slowly drew
That's manned by men the pirates sought to slew.
Then sudden watchman gives the loudest cry
That bids the thieves rise in great surprise.
With swinging hooks the thieves now breach the gap
To wage on sailing men a warring wrack.
The hooks of steel the other vessel grasp
To hold the place as barbs do firmly clasp.
So quick the act that men did hardly know
The plan that pirates made to gain abode.
They haused the lines to bring them ever near
A sight that filled the sailing men with greatest fear.
Now crossing over sabers raised on high
To slay the men who ever dared defy
The pirates' will by fighting back with blows
Their cannons wrought on thieves inside their bode.
Then seeing turn of tides they quick withdrew
In fear of men who fellows deftly slew.
With wicked curves their blades on high were raised
Their face now bore a look that's fierce and crazed.
With angry swings they hacked at sailing men
Their cutting many life and also limb.
They knew that death's now certain downward brought
On heads of men that ever daring fought.
But Chavet stood with saber deftly trained
Inflicting well on savage greatest pain,
And Adriene beside him fought with fury great
To try and help her lover alter fate.
The pair the only sailors trained in war,
And only one for long the teaching bore.
But still though weak in frame and new at foil
With bravest wrack the maid by lover toiled.
And slowly pair did turn the tide of fight
By striving hard and pushing back with might
They owned in shoulder making war on men,
And many down to depths they surely send.
There back to back the pair then conquered foes,
And pushed them off to slowly gain a hold.
When seeing valor wrought a better chance
The other sailors quickly changed their stance.
They drew their swords and hasty rushed to side
Of pair who will of thieves did dare defy,
And sought to aide in driving pirates back
So turning all their weapons men attacked
To forward thrust and press the chance they gained
That pair had made through greatest fighting pains.
They clashed with swords in hopes to end their foes
To make the oceans' deeps their finale bode.
And clashing steel does fill the whole of deck
That sounded loud aboard the sailing wreck
As sailing men with pirates, battle brave
In hopes that men the will of thieves do stave
Preventing theft of ship that king did grant
With courage much though weapons very scant.
The tide does vary back and forth so great
Uncertain lies the sailors' future fate.
Who knew not whether effort gave was good,
Or whether pirates' will is long withstood.
So long on deck they carried waring forth
As each did try to muster martial force
In hopes to drive the other side away
Both seeking way that other side they'll slay.
But fin'lly crew had broken through,
And pirate foes they justly slew.
With naught but courage temp'ring blade
On heels of thieves the sailors bayed.
And deepest dread now quickly came
On men who sought their lives to claim
Forgoing all the wrack they made
In fear that strife might lead to grave.
They turned unfast'ning hooks from ship
To slacken ropes and end their grip.
For sailors fought with all their strength
That pushed the warring men to very brink.
By wrath of prince along with crew
They many thieving men then slew.
They knew their plans had fallen short
With all their hopes of plunder thwart.
They quick undo the mass of ropes
To rid themselves of foe they hoped.
Then off they push to leave them be
To shed their foes for open seas.
And off they go now licking wounds
That all on ship deserved as boon.
Foregoing all their hopes to gain
The ship that pirates sought to claim.
So thieving crew is drove away
A broken ship and death the pay
They earned for ever daring try
The ship from captain's clutch to pry.
And swift the foreign vessel fled
Away from ship the pirates bled.
To live and fight another day
Is better fate than ocean grave.
And men did cheer to see them flee
With broken ship as only fee,
And loud rejoicing spread on deck
Though vessel bore some marks of wreck.
And captain limping gave a cry
To let them know that fate's defied.
Rejoicing mixed the great relief
That men had sure averted grief
Did fill the air so loud that day
At vict'ry found by fighting brave.
And maiden's cheers were greatest found
On all the ship that's current bound
To distant land so great and far
She seeks with labor true and hard.
For moment easing heart at sight
Of captain standing great in might.
With cutlass raised above his head
He used to render many dead.
Though battered hard along with ship
She's sure he'll justly lead this trip,
And bring them far to foreign land
As king of France at first had planned.
But out of corner maiden surely saw
A man who scowled so great at captain's call.
Infamous cur with sullen face does stand
As one who rues the loss of dearest plan.
His evil eyes the man on captain sets
Like bearing heart that wicked plans abet.
And curious thoughts in maiden's heart are held
For wicked man who vessel current dwells.
Why grieve at fate avoiding early death
Is pride of man so quick with ease bereft?
That lech in face of vic'try granting life
The prince had won for all by waging strife
Would feel his spite by man forgoing words
When wretch to give the ships to thieves had spurred.
Yet surely petty thoughts so lowly wrought
Aren't thing that angry sullen stance had brought.
Some other mischief laid now deep in heart
Of man who dared refuse to play his part.
So maiden noted well to watch his ways
To hinder all the plans the villain made...
