Canto II: The Mutiny
Read in Landscape.
Blazing of sun and the lack of the wind
Causes the minds of the sailors to sin.
Turning their thoughts on to strangest of paths
Stealing their reason and stoking their wrath.
Kindling anger that grows in their heart
Bidding them play to a treasonous part.
Blaming their captain and blaming themselves
Blaming the whole of the world where they dwelled.
Putrid their hearts and so tainted their thoughts
Soiled by wasting the doldrums had wrought.
Mutinies whispered in quietest of tones
Racing through crew as a secret it roams.
Priming their hearts for the greatest of sins
Slowly to ranks they now added more men.
Waiting for moment when best they could strike
Seizing the vessel in greatest of fights.
Waiting for first who would brazen rebel
Taking the ship on which they now dwelled.
Rising amidst them a figure appears
Goading their actions by stoking their fears.
Diable his name he was worst of the men
Always the first who would join in the sin
Beckoning others to follow his path
Biding them heed to their lust and their wrath.
Speaking he tells them to take on their arms
Bidding them greatest and deepest of harms.
Voicing frustrations growing in minds
Ready to lead them in greatest of crimes.
Strong in his stature and quick with his speech
Talking so hearts of the sailors he'll reach.
"Hellish fiends my dearest friends
Gather close and listen well
Pleasure's bought by highest sins
Springing forth from deepest hell.
Lose your faith and gain your freedom
Make a place for hate to dwell
Deep in heart where devil feeds them
Deep in soul where anger swells.
Rail for power, powers ceded
Rail for death they'll run and hide
Conscience voice is seldom needed
Pities urgings simply lies.
Future times will tell your story
Tell for truth your sordid lies
Charge to battle great and gory
Let not honor fate deny!
Many were lost to the words of the fiend
Knowing not only their doom he does bring.
Rallying round him with hearts now aflame
Hoping that ship from the captain they'll claim.
Drawing their sabers on fellows in crew
Ready in hearts for their friends they now slew.
Joining the rebel a third of the men
Same as the number of angels who sinned.
Greater in host but lesser in rage
Faithful did lose in the battle they waged.
Stripped of their freedom by men who were friends
Down at their feet they do kneeling now bend.
Fearing their foes who in fury are dread
Knowing resisting would render them dead.
During the struggle a fellow does leave
Quick from the rabble he silently flees.
Down to the bowels of the ship he does go
Down to the parts where the captain abodes.
Hoping to find there their savior who left
Going to captain who's down in its depths.
Finding the cabin, he enters inside
Seeing their Jean and the captain who's lied
Wrack by an illness that suddenly set
Sickness that surely their actions abet.
Quickly he tells him of trouble on deck
Speaking of mutiny found on the wreck.
Hearing the crewman he gathers his foil
Going to deck where the sailors had toiled.
Beating the waves by the commands he'd spoke
Fighting the tempest till hurricane broke.
Quickly forgetting the peril of sin
Slipping inside their own role once again.
Sprinting to deck with his saber at side
Ready to counter the dangers there lied.
Bursting on deck with a confident gait
Burning with fury so awful and great.
Seeing ingratitude sailors had wrought
After the crises their slacking had brought.
Fury was great along with his ire
Turned to the men and their actions so dire.
Drawing his saber and pointing at crowd
Shouting in anger so great and so loud.
"As Moses stood on mount in greatest awe
When sins of masses God's own prophet saw
I gawk beholding works of fellow men
Who narrow fled from price of slothful sin.
What awful lies have taken root in heart
That bid you take on rebels' role and part.
Who twisted thoughts, what words were spoke so vile?
To fill you up with hatreds putrid bile.
The straights we're in aren't solved by acts of men
On will of God alone these doldrums end.
So overthrowing ship won't change this fate,
Nor giving soul to deepest sin and hate.
Repent your actions wrought in fevered wrath,
And turn yourselves on back to righteous path."
Stepping from masses the man who had spoke
One who convinced them when vows they had broke.
Taking his place with the cruelest of grin
Weaving his lies that would lead them to sin.
Facing his foe with the wretchedest smile
Filled with fury so wicked and vile.
"Petite Jean you wretched knave
Come to stand in captain's stead?
Tell us all your council gave?
Wait and pray until we're dead?
Doldrums act as natures will
Men can't change the course of winds.
Captain's actions failed us still
Fate to thoughts of leaders bend.
All who stand here know the tale
Journey seldom went so well
Often things have broke and failed
Upon ship we current dwell.
Wrought beneath the captain's gaze
All our troubles also woes
Ship might never met the haze
'Cept on course he bid us go.
Only change of rule is good
Only newer head may save
All on ship who current stood
Back from threat of deepest grave."
Gritting his teeth at the words of his foe
Ready to answer and grant him his woe.
Drawing his shoulders and lowering head
Speaking with voice that was calm yet still dread.
Answering charge that was levied by fiend
Hoping his answer, the crew will have weaned.
Bringing them back from the lies they were told
Wrought by the rebel so wicked and bold.
Knowing not depths that the decay had spread
Rooting itself in their hearts and their heads.
Blocking what's reason and moral from mind
Anger and hatred their soul did now blind.
"So many problems wrought on voyage came
From hand of man who deepest grievance claims.
You led the men into the sin of sloth
With words and deeds and jest you wrought,
And mocked the few who broke from rank you held
When sailors tried to lend their aid as well.
Thus forcing crew to follow self in sin
By turning hearts of all your fellow men.
So crew did seldom ever take our heed,
And rarely cared for ship or captain's needs.
Yet here you stand demanding price be paid
For words and actions wretch himself has made.
What price will rebel give for role he played
When problems wrought onboard the deck he made.
You say the ship might never met the storm
If diff'rent course the captain's will had born.
But problem made by villain delayed us long,
And set the ship for tempest great and strong."
Sensing the turning of crew he now spoke
Quickly so fog of his spell is not broke.
Knowing that answer must hastily come
Else would the crew who were silent and dumb
Turn from the path he had carefully paved
Road that would lead to the captains own grave.
"Captain's folly bears the blame
Crew has gave the service learned
Honor leader never claimed
Respect Chavet has never earned.
Better man would've found a way
Forcing crew to heed his words
Greater leader would've had his say
Causing hearts of men to spur.
Stronger man must head the vessel
Stronger man for stronger crew
All your woes must captain wrestle
Rally close my chosen few.
Gone too far with course of action
Fate at hands of crew be dread
Choice is made for all your factions
Changing means you'll soon be dead!"
Seeing that none of the sinner would sway
Still did they cling to their rebellious ways.
Perceiving his folly as wisdom so grand
Still by his side did the traitors now stand.
Finding resolve in the words he had spoke
Sure was his claim, and his spell was not broke,
Sailor does look to now challenge the tides
Caused by these traitorous actions and lies
Knowing that course that is currently set
Surely would end with their loss and their death.
Suddenly thought does then come to his mind
Yelling to foe in the hopes he's in time.
"You say a stronger man would better rule
Perhaps in hopes that all on ship you'll fool,
But arms untested all along the way,
And none can know if truth's what man does say.
I bid you ready arm and challenge meet,
And face me fair on deck in dueling feat.
Now let us see whose strongest man on deck
That greatest swordsman rules enfeebled wreck.
For talk is cheap and powers easy claimed,
And many men have won a type of fame
By bragging great of skill they never owned,
And playing up a craft they never honed.
So prove your worth before the host who stand,
And show them all the might of rebel man.
Who claims he alone bears the strength of will
To lead this ship when after captain's killed."
Smirking at sailor who challenge did cry
Knowing that servant would surely now die.
Jean was too slight to yet carry the day
Quickly the sailor the villain would slay.
Drawing his scimitar facing his foe
Ready so down to the depths he would go.
Circling prey like a lion that's starved
Readying cleaver so flesh it could carve.
Smirking at fool who had given his life
Up from his hands in the vainest of strife.
Fighting a fate that was already set
Gaining what's only his shame and his death.
"Foolish choice and foolish death
Giving life for man who's stranger
Ready self for final breath
Ready self for fatal danger!
Soon this ship will follow rule
Soon your name will be forgotten.
Heeding words and actions cruel
Pay for plan that's ill begotten.
Pay with blood and flesh at hands
Owned by rebel great and awful
Death will further rebels plans
Making claims I've made more lawful!"
Leaping at Jean with his sword in the sky
Screaming at sailor with militant cry.
Ready to cleave him and cut him in twain
Hoping that quickly his life he would claim
Scimitar fell with his strength and his weight
Fueled by all of his anger and hate.
Quickly the sailor does block with his blade
Barely in time to be sheltered and saved.
Reeling from strength of the strike that was brought
Down with a sureness his life it had sought.
Still he did stay on the course of what's right
Meeting his foe in a furious fight.
Barely the sailor was stopping the blows
Wrought by the rebel the strongest of foes.
Backwards he's pushed by the onslaught of blade
Praying that skill will yet save him from grave.
Saber and scimitar clash on the deck
Fury and skill now compete for the wreck.
Forward and backward they fight to the death
Stabbing and cleaving with fury so deft.
Sprawling the length of the ship they do fight
Each with the fullness of all of their might.
Strength of the arm and the cunning of mind
Both with the other in battle now vied.
Skill of the righteous and fury of sin
Even they're matched so that neither may win.
Blocking and striking with greatest of speeds
Neither to fear nor to doubt do they heed.
Locked in a duel that always shall last
Long till the days of the earth shall be past...
Quickly the villain does slow in his strikes
Tiring from earlier fury and spite.
Blows are not heavy as once they had been
Back at the start when he thought he would win.
Slowly he's pushed by the sailor he fights
Back though his foe has a frame that is slight.
Clever with saber he parried and strikes
Sneaky and cunning though lacking in height.
Feinting to right and then cutting to left
Showing to all there a skill that was deft.
Frustrating all of the plans of his foe
Filling his heart with the greatest of woe.
Strikes of the rebel now falter and fail
Tired so only his arms can he flail.
Weakness now came where once strength had yet been
Losing his fury along with his wind.
Finally falling to ground he does yield
Tossing his sword and surrend'ring field.
Seizing the moment, the sailor does cry
Out to the crew who enshackled now lie.
Bidding them rise and their pride to avenge
Down to the deck will the rebels they send.
Crying with fury and loudest of voice
Beckoning sailors to bravest of choice.
"Now rise my allies take your ship from foes
So back to voyage vessel swiftly goes!
For long these men delayed the course of ship,
And surely added length of time to trip!
A better voyage waits when tares are gone
So once again the wheat may grow yet strong,
And fear not might that rebels bear in arms
For teeth are pulled they lack the will to harm.
A leaders strength outstrips his servants own,
And Diables words the rebels fury honed.
So rise they'll fall before the might you wield
I bid you strength to crew and ship now yield!"
Suddenly courage did come to their hearts
Up they did spring and were playing their parts.
Seizing their weapons and fighting their foes
Bringing to villains the greatest of woes.
Furious and great with their arms that were drawn
Mighty in power as sun in the dawn.
Clashing with men who had stolen the ship
Quick from their hand had their prize now been ripped.
Small in their number and small in their heart
Bearing not will of the treasonous part.
Quickly to faithful the faithless did fall
Nothing the fury of sailors could stall.
Beating them down and then making them yield
Taking revenge for their friends they had killed.
Tying them tightly so none could escape
Ready to give them to ocean as fate.
Suddenly Jean did now speak to the crew
Stopping their actions before anger had grew.
Outstripping power to stall them from wrath
Hoping to forge for them different path.
Going to head of the mob he did speak
Boldly he bid them to action that's meek.
Telling them spare them from death in the waves
Yielding not rebels to comfort of grave.
"I bid you yield not foes to oceans waves
Though fiends deserve to lie in such a grave
Instead to wretched island ship will go
Where first began our trials along with woes.
There prisons dank and dark will hold these men
Who sought against their fellow crew to sin.
We'll leave them down in dungeons dark and grave
Where men may waste till end of mortal days.
Don't bloody hand like rebels surely would,
And slay not foes like traitors if they could.
Instead in deepest dankest cell they'll rot,
And ponder fate their actions surely brought."
Swallowing bile they then heeded his words
Quick on to mercy the sailors were spurred.
Knowing that fury would worsen their fate
Giving to reason instead of their hate.
Staying their hands from the death of the crew
Even though only the rebels they slew.
Turning to rebels whose lives he had saved
Drawing them back from the watery grave.
Speaking with voice that was angry but calm
Promising neither a respite or balm.
Bidding them work with a voice that was fell
Forcing them labor on vessel they dwelled.
"The state of ship was wrought by rebels' hand
When crew did harken fast to Diables' plans.
Now ship is weak unfit for ocean's tide
A state of things that I refuse abide.
So ready selves for labor hard and long
I'll put to use your forms though weak or strong.
Now still resolve for greatest pains I'll wrack
To fix this ship I'll willing break your back."
Setting the rebel to labor that's hard
Tying them up so their freedom was barred.
Forcing their work in the heat of the day
Driving them hard so for sins they would pay.
Slowly the wreck did improve in its state
Bettering Galleon though still it was blate.
Sudden a breeze has been felt by the crew
Sudden a wind that so softly was blew...
Ending the doldrums and raising their hope
Knowing that sheep had been taken from goats.
Cheers did now rise from the midst of the men
Knowing that worst of the journey's at end.
"Now ready sails for trials come to end,
And rains arrived along with sturdy wind!
To island let this vessel quickly go
On back to place that started all our woe.
We'll leave the rebels rotting deep in cells
There trapped in cage like demons deep in hell.
Then back to voyage men will surely go,
And world that's new we'll make our future bode."
Finally ship was now able to leave
Back to the island where they first had been grieved.
Back to the place where the seeds had been sown
Back to the shore where their sins had been grown...
