Chapter Six: Whispers from the Hall

Unable to sleep, his mind racing about what he's discovered, Alex lies awake in his room. The crown molding around the ceiling, the crooked closet door, the cardboard boxes stacked in the corner, his eyes are all but still.

The faint sound of a cell phone ringing grabs his attention.

"It's 2:30 in the morning, why is someone's cell phone going off right now?" Alex wonders.

Listening carefully, it rings for a few seconds and then stops. Someone answered. Alex slowly gets out of bed and opens the door as quietly as he can, tip-toeing his way down the hall and to his Aunt's bedroom door. He places his ear against the door and listens closely for a couple of minutes, being careful not to make a single sound.

"I swear I'll find out if they know anything sir. I'm not going to jeopardize the task at hand, not with this much money on the line. If he has the folder, I'll find it." You can hear Linda whispering on the other side of the door.

"Code Lima Charlie One One Four. Permission to proceed," Linda says with a perfect tone.

"Where's her stutter?" Alex wonders under his breath. "And who in the hell is she talking to?"

Accidentally leaning too far into the door, Alex bumps it with his shoulder.

"Shit."

Alex runs back into his room, shuts the door behind him, and jumps into bed. Hoping that his Aunt Linda didn't hear him, he lays there patiently with his heart racing. You can hear Linda's bedroom door open, and then footsteps slowly making their way down the hall. The light from the hallway casts a shadow underneath the door and Alex can see the outline of his Aunt's feet on the floor of his bedroom. She knocks, but then slowly starts to open the door. Alex, his heart skipping a beat, sweat starting to bead across his forehead, rolls over and pretends to be asleep. The sheer feeling of her looming over him is enough to give Alex goosebumps.

The door shuts and Alex lowers the blanket away from his face. Beatifically taking in the first gasp of fresh air, colder than the thick air under the covers, he sits up in his bed and tries to contemplate what just happened. He reaches over to the nightstand and grabs his phone. Putting in his passcode, he starts to go through the pictures from earlier.

"What is she trying to find?" Alex whispers to himself.

Slowly scrolling through the pictures, zooming in and panning each one meticulously, searching for anything that may shine some light on what she, or they, are looking for.

"Who is "They"?" he wonders. "Harrison & Harlen Tech? Whoever they are, I need to find out before they get their hands on this folder."

---

The sun is peeking through the gaps in the blinds, shining across the scattered papers on Alex's bed. His eyes opening and closing every few seconds as he's awoken by the sound of Hickory outside. Barking at the squirrels again. Alex rubs his eyes and lets out a long drawn out yawn. The bags under his eyes look as if he got into a fight in his sleep. Rolling over, he attempts to get a little more sleep.

"Alex. Honey, it's time to wake up. We've got a big day ahead of us," Blake says while knocking on the door.

He tries to pretend not to hear his mother talking.

"Oh shit!" he says quickly.

The papers are still spread out on the bed, spilling over onto the floor. He scrambles to gather all of the paperwork together. Shoving most of it under the bed, he stands up as his mother opens the door.

"What were you doing son?" his mother asks curiously.

"Nothing. What are you talking about? I was just stretching," he responds nervously.

Blake stares at her son, scanning the room for something that might give her a hint. She walks passed him, pushing him with the back of her forearm as she kneels beside the bed, lifting the blanket to look underneath the bed.

"What is all this Alex?" Blake asks.

"Papers. It's just some papers I found."

"From where? What are they?" she asks again.

"From.... from the old house Mom. I found them while cleaning out the hall closet," Alex responds. "But I'm not even sure what they are, or what they say."

Blake looking through the papers, drops them with a stunned look on her face.

"He said he got rid of everything. There wasn't supposed to be any proof of what happened," she says with a panicked tone under her breath.

"What? What are you talking about Mom? You know what this is?" Alex asks.

"Yes, but I'm not going to involve you in it Alex. You should have never opened this folder."

Blake gathers the paperwork and shoves it all into the folder, sticking it under her arm. She takes a step forward but stops to think for a moment.

"Don't say anything to your Aunt about this. I don't want to involve her," she says.

Alex stands there, quiet for a second, then speaking up to share what happened last night.

"Last night, I was laying in bed and I heard Linda's... Aunt Linda's phone ring. So I got up to see who she was talking to, and I know I shouldn't be eavesdropping like that but it was two in the morning. But, she didn't have a stutter and she was talking to someone about finding out what we know. And I think that this folder has something to do with it Mom."

Blake, shocked, looks around the edge of the door and down the hall. No sign of Linda.

"Are you serious? Are you sure you heard her correctly? What all did she say?"

Alex, overcome with questions, replies. "Yes I'm serious. I was listening through her door as she was talking. She said something about a code and trying to find that folder."

"What was the code? Do you remember Alex?" Blake asks.

"Ummm.. Code... Code... Li.. Lima Charlie O..." thinking hard to remember, he's cut off by his mother.

"One One Four," Blake finishes for Alex.

"Yeah, how'd you know Mom?" Alex asks with a confused look on his face.

Blake pulls her son to the side and starts to whisper quietly.

"Code Lima Charlie One One Four was the last mission code for your father before he was killed," Blake says nervously. "But I'm not sure why your Aunt Linda would be asking about that."

"Something is going on around here Mom. First the cameras, and now this," Alex says. "We need to figure this out before something bad happens."

Blake nods her head in agreement and walks out into the hallway. Making her way passed Linda's bedroom door with the folder tucked underneath her shirt.

"They've been in there a while just talking. I'm not sure what about, but I heard something about the code sir," she can hear Linda's faint voice through the wooden door. "That's not necessary sir, I can handle it," Linda says again.

Stopped in the middle of the hallway, Blake is listening intently. The voice on the other side of the door stops. Blake keeps walking and closes her bedroom door as Linda's swings open. Linda hears the click of the handle as it catches in the frame. She knocks on Blake's door lightly.

"Blake? Are you in there? We need to talk about dinner arrangements," Linda says, trying to think of an excuse to open the door.

Blake, thinking on her toes, hides the manila folder in the middle of a pile of dirty clothes. Just as she adjusts her balance and turns around, Linda is directly behind her, unaware that she's standing just feet away from the very folder she has been looking for.

"What are you d... d... doing Blake?" Linda asks in an ominous tone.

"Just gathering some dirty clothes so I can start putting them away," Blake responds quickly.

Linda glances around the room. Her eyes catch the corner of the room where the camera is hiding.

"Very w... well then. I'm about to start lu.... lu.... lunch if you're hungry."

A fake smile perks the edge of Blake's mouth, she nods her head in response as Linda turns around and leaves the room with a smug look on her face. Linda shuts the door behind her and smiles, knowing she's getting closer.
