Chapter 4: Titanic. No?
It started with a soft rumble. The ground shook. The windows began to shatter. Jax snapped from his sleep as he held his palms up preventing the sunlight from shining into his eyes. He watched the windows cracked forming visible spider-web patterns. Picking his back pack up, Jax hurried towards Alex, patting the younger boy on his shoulder waking it up. Alex startled from his sleep, his blue eyes looked directly into Jax's brown ones as he pushed himself up upon feeling he vibration of the building. The sunlight was slowly disappearing. The rumble was stronger than before.
"We need to get out of here, Alex. Come on." Jax shouted.
Both the boys raced down the building, steadying themselves as they both held onto the rail by the side scrambling down the flight of stairs. Jax ran ahead with Alex following him by the side heading towards the main door as they exited the building only to come face to face with a huge lightning struck right towards the ground a few inches in front of them. Jax pulled Alex backwards urging the boy to stand up. His brown eyes looked around for anything, perhaps a vehicle but there was none. They were all destroyed into pieces or either useless.
The nearest broken bicycle was sucked up into the air as the thunders began to rumble, lightning struck causing the lands ahead to burst into horrifying flames. It began to gather around like a huge ball of sand. Everything was sucked up harshly. Wasting no more time, Jax and Alex both ran to the left behind the other tall buildings as they watched the rest of the materials being sucked up mercilessly. The storm was getting larger, forming into a huge cylindrical tube getting bigger and bigger as it sucked up more things. Thunder began to rumble in the skies as another lightning flashed down to the left breaking the building into half and lit the grounds on fire.
Alex pulled Jax closer to him as they both raced hurriedly towards the opposite direction heading towards a garage. There was a rail near the stairs and a huge wall to prevent them from being sucked up into the whirlpool of thunder and unwanted materials. Jax held onto the rail as Alex directed him too. They both held close to each other preventing the wind from pulling them ahead. The coldness had been seeping through their clothes into their skin. It was cold, but the heat from the nearby fire was a little welcoming. Jax began to wonder if this would be the end of his life.
"Hey, Jax!" Alex shouted gaining attention from the older boy, "If I die..."
"No! No! Don't be melodramatic out of a sudden! No one is dying, Alex! Shut up!" Jax shouted in return hitting the boy on his arm as he tightened his grip on the rail as another gush of wind blew through their direction.
"No! You listen to me!" Alex shouted holding onto Jax's gloved palms tightly, "I want you to keep surviving alright! Promise me!"
"What are you talking about?! Stop talking nonsense! I am not Jack and you are not Rose! I am not doing that! Mind you this is not an acting interview! Damn you, Alex!" Jax mumbled, his voice rose as he leaned down onto the back of Alex's jacket preventing the dust from flying into his face and eyes. Jax flinched as he heard another lightning struck not far from where they were probably just a few meters ahead of them.
Alex chuckled, his head turned, his blue eyes looked backwards at the older man who was holding him close, his grip tightened on the railing, "Of course it is not! Just promise me you will!"
"I said I am not doing it! We will both survive this! Stop it, Alex!" Jax shouted staring into those blue eyes sternly, "I lose my sister, I am not losing a brother I never had. Damn you, Alexander!" He growled.
"How did you get my full name?" Alex questioned curiously.
"You were shouting last night telling someone not to call you 'Alexander.' So, don't you dare die on me today!" Jax spoke, the determination to keep his partner alive was burning through his veins.
Alex just chuckled, nodding in agreement with defeat. His blue eyes looked out seeing nothing in particular except the strong wind including the dusts flying around. Suddenly, everything began to slow down, the thunders disappeared, everything fell down on the ground, a dead body fell down just right next to them with a loud thud joining by a 'splat' sound echoed through their ears. Alex looked up as he almost threw up at the sight of burnt flesh, the brains falling out of it, the head torn into two. He walked out of the place with Jax, the older boy preventing Alex from looking again. As they stepped out, the lightning stroke again across the skies.
"Let's get out of here." Jax spoke as he dragged the younger boy who willingly trailed along from behind, his feet running at the same pace.
They ran deeper into the city, where there were more cracked buildings. There wasn't any survivor and Jax personally began to wonder. He ran ahead, his brown eyes caught sight of the cracks by a building, the water leaking out of it. Jax looked around the city. It was covered with walls. It was then the thought struck his mind when he noticed a pile of fallen rocks. "No way." He muttered looking at Alex, "We are surrounded by a huge dam. This city is built in between dams."
The skies began to grow dark, the clouds clouding the sun and again, the thunders were heard. Alex looked around, "We need to climb out of this city through the dam. If the water had flown out from there, the best chance is we could get out of there."
Jax nodded in agreement. Wasting no more time, they ran towards the broken dam, climbing between fallen building and rocks ignoring the merciless lightning building up flames on the ground. Their feet carried them hurriedly, their breathes increased as their heart beats raced, running immediately towards the broken dam. The lightning struck again, the wind began to howl. It gave no mercy to the boys. In fact, from the looks of it, Mother Nature was trying to wipe out all of humanity. This time, the lightning struck in pairs. It landed just a few centimetres away on their left. They were dumbstruck, but they kept running as fast as their legs could carry them.
Jax heard a loud rumbling sound from the sides of the city only to come eye to eye with the dam breaking as water began to gush out in a strong current, the lightning stroke in between the water sending sparkling waves across the pouring water. Alex's blue eyes were widened. He pushed Jax ahead above a rock immediately as he ran watching as the waves started to gush out from the dam. Jax ran quickly following by Alex but both the boys were swept off their feat when a strong wave of water passed them throwing them into the water. Taken aback by the situation, Jax only managed to catch Alex's jacket preventing the boy from drowning further into the water.
Alex swam up pulling Jax together as they shook their head preventing their hair from excess amount of water. Jax breathed in the air as he held onto Alex, both the boys grabbing onto a nearby rock together climbing up. Alex panted as he heaved coughing out some water out of his lungs. He landed his back on the rock looking up at the rumbling skies sucking in enough amount of air before turning towards Jax who was already squeezing water out of his own hoodie. Jax removed his backpack setting it on the rock as another wave of lightning struck on the water. The buildings slowly sunk into the water. In no denial, the water was rising quickly from another broken dam.
"We can't get out of here." Jax muttered looking around the place only seeing water and a small storm forming into a hurricane, "There is no way."
"We can. We can swim out of here. Fate and destiny had always had special plans for each of us." Alex muttered almost out of breathe as he sat up removing his bag, the cold air began to seep through their wet attire.
Jax raised an eyebrow at the younger boy, "I am not Titanicing you again, Alexander. I swear. It was a movie. Look around. This is real!" He scoffed.
A huge wave hit onto the rock they were sitting wetting their bodies again as another lightning struck by the side of a tall building. The hurricane was slowly growing, in a mix of building and thunder. It was disastrous. Jax stood up, his backpack slipping away from his grip as it fell into the water. He did not mind knowing that if he did carry it along, he would drown with it. He looked towards Alex who stood up looking around as another of lightning stuck right above them towards the rock they were on and they both immediately dived into the water.
Once Jax felt his body hit the water, he opened his eyes looking around for Alex. The younger boy was swimming a few centimetres away from him. Jax immediately made his way there. He swam quicker towards Alex who was trying his best to swim quicker. Jax reached towards the boy, his blue eyes outrun the ugliness of the sight around them. Cracked buildings were sinking deeper into the water, dead bodies were floating, including dead animals. Jax even spotted a few books, photo books and a painting sinking onto the ground. Wasting no more time at the ugly surroundings, Jax pulled Alex up towards the surface as he grabbed hold onto his collar.
"Alex! Don't you dare give up! We have run for almost a week together! If you dare give up now, I swear...."
"Jax, no I am not giving up, but I know I will not make it there. You need to go." Alex spoke, his blue eyes looking directly towards Jax's brown ones.
"No, you have to give me a reason." Jax protested. A struck of lightning coursed through the air again.
"If I ever have a next life, I promise we could be best friends and siblings. Whatever you wish."
"Don't you dare talk nonsense with me, alright." Jax pulled the boy by the collar of his jacket swimming towards a floating plastic chair grabbing onto it. Now, Jax had never expected to see anything floatable but he was glad when he saw the chair and a few empty water bottles floating around including a dead body passing just right in front of him.
Alex was silent. His blue eyes looked around. He turned towards Jax with shaky palms, "Look, I am afraid of water! I might be able to swim." Alex spoke gagging at the water before he continued, "I am afraid. I can't last long in this. I..."
Before Alex could finished his sentence, a huge building collapsed falling directly onto them both. Alex's blue eyes caught sight of the building as he pushed Jax away from where he was, and both the boys were separated by the building. Jax shouted but his voice was replaced with gurgled when he was dragged down together. Little did he know that the sleeve of his long sleeve shirt was stuck by the small steel stuck out of the building dragging him down together. Jax wriggled in the water holding onto his breathe. His brown eyes looked around catching sight of Alex drowning deeper. Wriggling in between the water, he picked up a knife he had slipped in between his pockets cutting his sleeve from the steel.
Jax swam towards Alex's drowning body catching sight of the red liquid from Alex's face. From afar, he could see the boy waving telling him to go away and not chase after him. Jax wanted to growl, his heart was in fear again, the pain coursing in his heart all over again as he swam up to the surface gasping for some air. Lifting his palms up to his head, Jax pushed his wet hair backwards, his brown eyes looked around the collapsing buildings. He felt numb on the inside. Letting his scream to pierce through the skies, Jax heaved. His cheeks were red, his brown eyes were unfocused as hate coursed through his veins. The anger at his own self, the world and everything around him.
"Damn it!" He growled in anger, his fist found its way on the surface of the water.
Jax was lost in his own, guilt, pain, sadness and hatred that he had missed the sight of another collapsing building from behind him. He heard the last rumble of thunder and the stroke of lightning seeing the sunlight appearing from beneath the clouds before he found himself falling into a deep sleep.
