Chapter 47
Life is so unpredictable, and the only scripts that work out are the ones that are used in films and series, because while dealing with real life nothing works, big plans fail, all the dialogues that you would have ever thought would go to fail. The kind of Hi that you would practice a millions of times remains right there in your mind and the actual happenings are either too sweet or hopeless and haphazard.
As Divya picked up the call and Nandini's dad called out for someone to open the door, she took it upon herself to open the door.
And that was how they met once again after a year, with him shrugging off the rain from his t shirt, his bag hanging on his one shoulder like always, however this time the extra fat of his body wasn't there, he had grown too thin, however his teasing smile and taunts right there where it would always be.
"Yes Jignesh, no she she is sleeping, you tell me what is it?" Divya opened the door and walked back in simply, it didn't really occur to her that she was to say hi to them or welcome them, she just walked in. Behind her she could hear them talking to uncle as she explained to Jignesh what all he could get and sat down on the sofa once again.
"Yes, just get a pair of changing clothes, sports shoes are a must, an umbrella or a wind cheater. And if you could then get something to eat."
"Why are you telling him to get something to eat?" Nandini's mom chidded her as Divya gave her a quizzical look while Nandini argued with her in her half sleepy state.
"Obviously he should, what will he eat then, we aren't supposed to feed everyone there."
At that very moment Madhava and Manav walked in. Manav went off to keep his bag at a side and to occupy the seat as Divya hung up the call and shook hands with him saying him a bright Hi.
She then turned towards Madhav who was smiling brightly at her, a little awkward as to what would be more appropriate. Divya took it upon herself and first shook hands with him and then enveloped him in a hug.
"Hi Madhav, I missed you!!"
"Same here yaar, it's been so long."
Divya smiled at him and sat back, her heart was doing summer salts, what was it that she was even supposed to feel. He still looked so good, and cute and irritating at the same time. But she decided it was better to be indifferent to him else the whole trip would end up with them being the target of the group.
"What was Jignesh talking about ?" Nandini enquired
"He wanted to know what all things he needs to get, I have told him the majority of it and the rest I told him we will tell him later on." Divya answered and sat back beside Nandini. For a moment the room feel into utmost silence, with Divya fiddling with her phone, Nandini still sleeping on the sofa and Madhav and Manav being seated on the chairs with Manav's eyes first assessing Divya and then Madhav, than going back to Divya and then back at Madhav.
It would have become a full fledged awkward scene, however Nandini's mom saved them from all the awkwardness as she walked into the room,
"So who all are going to eat what?"
"Aunty we are here for Pav Bhaji. I don't know about Divya, I never invited her here." Madhav teased.
"Well news flash Madhav, I don't really need your invitation to be here."
Madhav smiled at Divya, the way he always did while he knew that he was surely ruffling her feathers, teasing her, pissing her off.
"Divya leave him, you know how he likes to tease you." Nandini's mom pacified her glaring at Madhav who was smiling like that of a kid. Soon conversations began to fall in with Madhav and Manav, teasing Nandini on how she could at least get them all a cup of tea, with them being the guest and how she should offer them at least a bit of tea or water.
"Who said you all are guests, all this while when you all just walk into this house, take over my belongings as if they are yours," she walked over to Madhav who was fiddling with her key chain and snatched it from him and said, "none of you are going to get any tea, why are you two late?
"Dude, have you seen the traffic, and then there was such a huge accident," Manav exclaimed.
"Accident? Are you guys okay?" the ladies enquired.
"Yeah, it's just that I left my belongings in the house."
Nadnini's mom had gone out to keep the paints at a side, as Divya and Nandini sat down on the sofa waiting for Manav to continue with his story of accident.
"So what happened was." Madhav began, looking right into Divya's eyes.
"Did I ask you to speak? Madhav that house is mine. So I will tell them the story."
"Okay, Manav what happened?" Divya asked, rolling her eyes. She couldn't believe the absurdity of theirs. They were supposed to tell them about a certain accident here, and all that matters to them is who is actually going to tell the story.
"So when Madhav came yesterday evening he kept his belonging in my house and we had gone out, but then obviously we had to come back home, so when we came back home this morning we opened the door and before we could enter the house a rat walked into the house."
Divya and Nadini looked at the two boys flabbergasted, not able to digest what was being fed to them.
"Look at the shamelessness of that rat, the owner of the house was standing right there, all tired waiting to enter the house, but he without any fear walked in as if he owned the place." Manav said.
"Manav, that was a rat, it wasn't going to wait there for your permission before entering your house," Nandini commented, " but you tell me one thing, why did you stood there still while it was entering the house, you were two of them you should have stopped it somehow."
"Have you gone mad?" Madhav exclaimed.
"I know right." Manav joined in as he continued,"It looked so dirty and scary, I don't even like them, the rats scare me."
"So what did you two do?" Divya asked.
The two boys looked at each other, smiled and then said, "I quickly got hold of my bag, Manav went inside and got his and we ran outside bolted the main door and ran off to here." Madhav said.
"And the rat?"
"It's still in the house. Dude when I went inside I did saw it, it was in the leaving and was looking at me with its hooded eyes, they were so damn scary!" Manav shivered at the memory as the two girls looked at them and than at each other.
Divya took a deep breath and spoke, "So the rat is still there, and where were you two since morning?"
"Oh I had gone to the office and he had gone to meet a friend and we lost track of time and then it was raining and we came here."
"Manav the rat is in your house, how are you going to get it out? Divya asked.
"AHH for that, I informed my roommate, he would take care of it. Yaar Nandu, chai la na please,"
However Nadnini and Divya were busy laughing. They couldnt believe the stupid friends that they had made. Two boys in their 20s with height around 6 were scared of a rat. They couldn't help but laugh as they pictured these two running off from the house.
"Okay, Madhav, Manav, Divya here is the pav bhaji, does any one wants kanda kachori"
Divya lifted her hand up as Nandini's mom served her the kachori. Soon they all fell into a light conversation. Time and again Divya would go to help Nandini's mom, ask Mandav and Madhav what they would like, and it all felt so homey.
It brought back the days when they had gone to IV and this would be how they would take care of each other, asking what all they wanted, if they needed anything more, or if they had food, she couldn't believe it was already a year to that trip, she though had feelings for Madhav, things felt different now.
Late at night Madhava and Manav left with a promise to meet the next morning. It left Divya with her thoughts, what was she to expect to do tomorrow, how was she to behave?
—---
The next morning, the day of the trek was different from what Divya had expected. It was raining, they had reached the boarding place early and the boys as well as the bus were late.
Divya had controlled her irritation over this fact as her feelings were all over the place with the knowledge that what was she to do with Madhav and with the whole group around them.
Last night had already been quite awkward with Just Manav being around them and now with the whole group she didn't know what would happen.
As she stood there and waited for everyone, all of a sudden she thought. Why should she be awkward, it wasn't as if she had done something wrong. She had just confessed her feelings to him, and Madhav had refused her, and they had gone back to be friends again, and that's what she would be,
She decided that she would speak well with him and be welcoming rather than what she had been last night, however she had a surprise for herself. As she saw the taxi pulling up in front of them, she waved as Aman, Dev and Atharva walked up to them smiling brightly.
It was at last that Madhav got out of the cab, he was wearing a light blue and white t-shirt that seemed to big for him and hanged from his shoulders, which was paired with navy blue shorts and shoes his bag hanging over his right shoulder as usual, his expressing grim as she waved at him, he walked past her as if she wasn't even there, it hurted her but more than that she couldn't understand what the hell was happening there.
