Chapter 2 Sniper

Rose(Sniper) - One week earlier

On a chilly evening in Ann Arbor Mi, two figures stood in between a beat up sedan and a motorcycle. The streetlights had not yet begun flickering to life, but now that the sun had hidden behind the tall buildings, the wind had come out to play. In Michigan’s long twilights, there was still some time before true darkness fell.

“Is there truly nothing else you can tell me?” The hunter, a girl called Sniper, questioned the old man before her, a doctor at the UofM hospital. Her contacts had informed her that a professor of medicine at the University of Michigan, a Dr. James Kensworth, had been reported missing. He had later been found by a jogger in a park, dead from heart attack. Or so the cops said. Sniper was there because the man currently tightening his scarf against the wind didn’t believe it was all so simple, and thought there may be foul play involved. Seeing as the police had already closed the case, the man decided to hire a private investigator; Enter Sniper’s favorite cover. She had helped a P.I. with a vampire problem about a year ago, and since then, any cases he caught that looked to be up her ally, he sent her way. At this point, Sniper still wasn’t really sure why he had sent her this particular case.

Professor Jeremy Mills wrung his hands, glancing over his shoulders before speaking again, “No, I’m sorry. But James was as strong as a bull, there’s no way he would have a heart attack like that. I’m not an idiot.”

“Look, I’ll see what I can dig up, but I can’t promise this will be in my area of expertise. Is there anything else strange or unusual that you may have noticed?” Anything. Literally anything would help at this point, I have nothing...

He sighed, the obvious relief sagging from his this shoulders, “Oh, thank you! And no, not that I could tell.”

“Alright, well, whatever. I’ll see what I can do.” They exchanged contact information, and shook hands before the professor left the near-empty parking lot. Sniper stuffed her notebook back into her inside coat pocket and swung onto her motorcycle, the bike purring as it spun off into the darkening night.
