The Noble Heart (Punk Fiction)
King Danel hobbled across a hushed battlefield. All around him, the ground was littered with the broken bodies of fallen men. He scanned the field, looking for the silver and emerald armour of the Prime Knight. As blood flowed from the gash in his thigh, he wondered if his friend was still alive.
Then he saw it. A golden ray broke through the melancholy clouds, causing the emerald trim of Lorencio's armour to glint in the beam's glow. King Danel rushed to the spot as fast his injuries would allow. He knelt beside the body of his dearest friend and saw that he was dead. The King shook his head as he surveyed the carnage. They had won, but at what cost? Tears streamed down his face and disappeared into his greying beard.
He rolled Lorencio's body over and was shocked to find no blood, though there was a sword through his friend's heart. But on muddied grass, he found a medal of gold with the tri-rose emblem etched into it. As he held it, the medal shone with a radiant brilliance which left him breathless. Immediately, he called for the other knights.
"Place Lorencio's body on a cart," he instructed, "take it back to the palace and have it dressed in his finest armour, as befits his rank. He must have a proper burial."
They bowed, "As you command, your grace."
"And send a falcon to the Elder Sage, Jimeno," he added, "tell him he is urgently needed at the palace."
The Elder Sage arrived from the mountains within a fortnight. Jimeno was advanced in years, two hundred and fifty to be precise. Yet his dark skin was barely wrinkled. He stroked his great white beard that dragged on the floor as he examined the medal.
"Yes," Jimeno said, "it is as I suspected."
"What is it?" asked the King.
"The Dominion Medal."
Awestruck, King Danel uttered, "Then the prophecy has come to past. The Old Line of the Estrada's has been reborn."
Jimeno nodded, "Indeed. You now know what you must do."
King Danel and Jimeno went directly to Lorencio's home to seek Enric. But his mother said he had gone into Waking Wood. And that is where they found him, beneath the shade of the Great Mahogany.
Enric knelt, "My King, to what do I owe—"
"Rise, my King," Danel said.
"I do not understand."
"When the noble heart is pierced," Jimeno began, "his blood shall turn to metal gold." Danel and the other men joined in. "Then the Great High King shall return as was foretold: to rule for a thousand ages so saith the word of the sages."
All then bent the knee to Enric. And from behind the Great Mahogany, Princess Amaia emerged to bow before her beloved Enric. Danel smiled at his daughter before removing his crown and placed it upon Enric's head.
"O King live forever!" He chanted, and the others soon joined in. And thus began the Golden Age of Altamaria.
