Chapter 35
Ajax and Jinx managed to destroy the enemy's battle station, along with the help of General Kyris. What was left of the Forces's fleet had leaped into hyperspace.
They stopped by the red moon Rood. Ajax and Jinx landed their ships in the landing bay of the cruiser. When Sylvie did not come out to greet them like what they expected, they went searching for her. They found her in the medical bay, sitting on one of the cots while the medic was asking her questions.
"What happened?" Ajax asked, catching the doctor before he left.
"She's just under a lot of grief, she'll come out of it soon," the doctor informed.
Ajax sat down next to her and Jinx sat across from her on an empty cot. They sat in silence for the longest of time and then Sylvie broke down sobbing. Jinx and Ajax did not touch her, for they knew that she needed to cry this out on her own. They felt guilty because her home planet was destroyed, and now she would never be able to live peacefully on it again. Her life had been destroyed with that planet.
The boys waited patiently for her to cry her heart out.
"I-I can't believe my home is-gone," she sniffled. "But-but, I'm glad you guys are okay. I couldn't bare to have lost you both too."
Ajax and Jinx exchanged a glance.
"Al-alright," Sylvie readied herself to stand, then collapsed back onto the cot and continued to sob. "Why?!"
The boys exchanged another look of pity. Ajax placed a hand on her shoulder and Sylvie caught him by surprise when she buried her face into him and stayed like that. He awkwardly placed a hand on her back and slowly rubbed it as her tears soaked his shirt. He felt his face grow warm. Jinx smirked at the sight of this. The trio stayed in the infirmary for quite some time before they were called and reminded that Shekira's funeral was taking place that night.
Sylvie found strength to leave the infirmary and they flew down to the same village they stayed in after the rescue from the jungle planet Zounkla. There, Shekira's friends and family got to see her peaceful body before they burned her on the pillar. The night sky sparkled with stars and the light from torches and fires illuminated the village. KiKi visited them at the end of the funeral, her eyes bloodshot from crying. She wrapped her arms around Jinx and whispered, "I am sorry for your loss."
Jinx returned her embrace and Sylvie and Ajax stepped away, leaving them to be alone.
"Well, looks like this war has ended," Ajax sighed, hoping to start a conversation.
"Apparently so," Sylvie agreed.
"What are you going to do now?" Ajax asked out of curiosity.
"I don't know, what I do know is I'll still go wherever you go," she smiled up at him.
"Why? I thought I was a trouble-maker and not worthy to be trusted?" he pried.
Sylvie elbowed him playfully in the ribs, "Don't get me wrong, you still are. It's just you've become a good friend, and I'll like to keep it that way."
"Ow," Ajax chuckled. "Okay, but I am not sure you can keep up with me."
"Oh please, I'll learn eventually."
"Right, eventually..."
Sylvie elbowed him harder in the rib cage, "Oops, sorry."
Ajax raised an eyebrow and stared up at the night sky. Sylvie did the same. So many adventures await up there. I wonder what the future has in stock for me, Sylvie thought.
"I think I've turned eighteen earth years old sometime during all of this hecticness," Ajax scratched the back of his head.
"Really? Now that I think about it, I think I've turned sixteen," Sylvie crossed her arms. "I've also wanted to know when you got this," Sylvie poked Ajax's earring.
"A few years ago. Why? Do you not like it?"
"No, it suits you."
They continued talking until Sylvie gave in to her tiredness telling Ajax, "I need some sleep." She walked to her guest bedroom.
The next days were full of celebration, parties, and feasting. Sylvie found herself staring into the night sky, imagining what missions and what surprises her new life had in store for her. Even if Earth was not destroyed, she had made lifelong friendships and she knew she was protected, despite the human prejudice in some countries. This was the life she would live from then on, exploring the galaxy with Ajax, and running into Jinx and KiKi who saved them from sticky situations, and assisting the Forces in any way she could. Sylvie was the last survivor from Earth, the only survivor, and that was what she was known as, the last earthling.
