Chapter 21

During the hike back to Jinx's shuttle, Ajax trailed behind while Jinx took the lead. The moonlight filtered through the trees and the glow from KiKi's weapon worked like a beacon. Bugs swarmed them and made the hikers paranoid. The ground beneath them was wet and soft. Strange animals filled the night with their sounds.

Sylvie slowed her pace until she was even with Ajax then resumed walking quicker. Goosebumps rose on her skin as a cool breeze rippled through the trees. These stupid rags, Sylvie thought. That was not the only thing going through her mind. She had so many questions for Ajax, but she did not know if they would sound too awkward.

"You okay?" Ajax asked, catching her off-guard.

"Yeah, just a little shaken, and cold," Sylvie replied, rubbing her arms.

To her surprise, he removed his jacket and tossed it to her.

I didn't mean to sound needy, Sylvie frowned as she slid her arms through the jacket. It was warm and did not smell bad like what she expected.

"Hey Jinx, I think we should take to the trees," Shekira called to the front.

"Whatever you say," Jinx shrugged and began climbing the nearest tree. The others did the same. Sylvie stood at the base of the tree and looked up. That was a long way up, and the trees were taller than any ordinary tree back on Earth.

"Come on Sylv! Can't you climb a tree?" Ajax called from where he was.

"No. I can. It's just really far up!" Sylvie's voice trembled.

"It's not as bad as it seems once you get up here!"

Sylvie's lip quivered and she began climbing. Something rustled in the bushes behind her and she froze. Turning her head to look where the sound was coming from, there was nothing. She exhaled longley and continued climbing, except this time with more motivation.

"See? I told you," Ajax smirked once she had made it to where he was.

"There really is something down there," Sylvie whispered.

    "I know, Shekira said so."

    "You trust what she says?"

"She's an experienced fighter and general. She knows more about combat than I do."

Now that's strange to hear coming from him, Sylvie raised her eyebrows.

They continued climbing until they reached an area where the branches were unusually thick for being so high up. Sylvie could see as clear sky and three oval moons lit up the tree tops. They continued their way to the ship, walking along the branches as if they were paths. Sylvie kept her eyes looking straight forward, because she knew if she looked down, she would hyperventilate. Honestly, she never even knew she was afraid of heights until now. A sharp snap caused her to look down. She misstepped and would have plummeted a thousand feet if Ajax had not caught her.

"Easy there Sylv," he said, pulling her back onto the branch.

"Is everything okay back there?" Shekira asked, stopping to let them catch up.

"Sylvie just slipped, we're fine," Ajax told her.

"Did you hear that?" Sylvie asked as another loud 'crack' echoed through the trees.

"Jinx, KiKi go get the ship and fly it here," Shekira ordered. "Run!"

As soon as Jinx took off running, a large creature with a wolf shaped head, a naked tail, cat-like agility, and claws leapt out from underneath them and swiped. The group scattered and Sylvie ran to the trunk of a tree and began climbing, only to be fronted by another one. She screamed and ran the opposite direction and was cut off by another.

They flashed their fangs at her, growling deeply. There's no way out, except- Sylvie jumped off the branch right as they pounced and landed with an 'oomph!' on a branch a few feet down. Groaning and pulling herself to her feet, she heard blaster fire and prayed for the others' safety. Looking down, she saw nothing but bushes.

She considered climbing to the forest floor, but a wolf head popped out of the dark from beneath her and she again started climbing for her life. The creature swiped at her and Sylvie cried out in pain as it's claws sliced open her left leg while she jumped to grab a branch that was out of reach. Hissing, she pulled herself onto the branch and ran with a huge limp. The creature roared and chased her. Sylvie's vision started blurring and her leg began feeling numb. Right as the creature leapt, KiKi came to the rescue and sliced the creature in two, sprinkling them in blood. It's two halves fell into the bushes and were sliced into millions of pieces by the sharp leaves of the shrubbery.

"Are you alright?" KiKi asked, allowing Sylvie to lean her weight on her.

"My leg is split open and you are asking me if I'm okay?" Sylvie moaned.

"We have to get some pressure on that wound," laying Sylvie against the tree.

"What are those?" Sylvie asked as she watched KiKi rip her leggings to form a bandage.

"Scabbers, they can adapt to live in any climate, they even exist on my planet," she tied the cloth tightly around Sylvie's calf. Sylvie muttered a curse from the pain.

"Sorry, it's a trick I picked up on the battlefield," KiKi brushed hair out of Sylvie's sweaty face.

Sylvie did not realize how much pain there really was until she had calmed down.

"You girls alright?" Ajax asked from the branch above them.

"Sylvie is injured, has Jinx come back yet?"

"He's hovering over the treetops," Ajax lowered himself down and knelt next to Sylvie. "How bad are you hurt?"

    "Just a scratch," Sylvie muttered.

Ajax raised an eyebrow, "It doesn't look like a scratch to me." He climbed up while KiKi helped her stand. Ajax and Sylvie grabbed each other's wrists and Ajax heaved her up. KiKi followed nimbly behind. They repeated the process until they reached the top branches, where the ship was hovering above. Sylvie managed to climb up the rope ladder and Shekira, who waited at the entrance, helped her in.
