The Lying Merchant

The scams that were rumored to be going on , were less scams and more simple mugging. The map seller with the shaggy beard Mr. Barj would select unknowns to the city that had no idea what they were doing , circle their map when they asked directions and give some new excuse as to why their destination was so far from their original destination.

"Oh mi'lady the home of your aunt and the other homes on that street were discovered to be in risk of disease! Horrible rats were infested in the walls , the city demanded they move temporarily until the pests are dealt with!"

"Yes sir , Your looking for the wrong pub if you want information . The Rats Nest is the best place to get information on your missing sister. Just down that ally"

The lies piled up and so did the coins. This last stranger hadn't been at all the type he would normally send . He seemed pretty capable for himself and might put up a good fight against his men , but they needed a little whipping into shape anyway and that albino elldion needed some sense kicked into him.

Barj crackled to himself rubbing the coins between his fingers when he heard a commotion up the street , he heard shudders close and saw people up the hill scurry away in their cob houses and shops. He heard the laughter of elldions like a bell in the distance and squinted. He couldn't see much but a girl yelling at them in front of that no good Cammy's stall. Meddling woman was being defended by some girl who was a Fauna by the looks of it to make matters more interesting. He hadn't seen a clueless fauna wander around this part of the city for awhile. Most of them had more sense.

Watching the girl get tossed senseless to the ground and then watching the Elldion walk off Barj could only shake his head. This one was more hopeless then they usually were. He watched as Cammy handed her a garment after staring her down , he stared down at her too. If it weren't for that disturbing tail and ear combo the girl would be exceptional. But promising was good too...he searched for ideas on how to use this guilelessness to his advantage. No doubt that meddling Cammy had by now warned her of maps and alleys. Well no matter she looked gullible.

"Miss ! Miss!" He said in his most pitiful voice when she came nearer.

The girl looked around for a minuet before deciding that he was indeed talking to her.

"Can I help you sir?"

He coughed and wheezed.

"Ive been asking passers by if they have seen my gran-daughter." He pulled out a drawing of his make believe grandchild . He had a picture for all sorts of lies , most were plucked from the idiots who managed to get mugged from his men. This picture came from a rather beautiful young woman who had been sold off to the Can-lu Island , he remembered that that woman had been particularly savage and it was before he himself had been old and grey.

"Your granddaughter?" She looked at the picture of the adorable girl and frowned.

"I haven't seen her." She said simply about to walk off.

"Don't go...please...Listen there's a reward." The girl stopped. They all did when the promise of money was involved.

"I just ask you to keep a look out , she was lost a few hours ago my vision isn't so good but shes so fond of going down to her friends house down that way." He pointed down the almost non existent ally. It was narrow and wouldn't have been noticed normally with as many " She looked at the man suspiciously.

"Then why havent you closed your stall to look for her?" She asked with her hands on her hips.

"Mam' if I close this stall we might starve to death come winter , I'm barely hanging on ..every hour is a promising hope for a coin that will feed my gand-baby and I just haven't had any luck. Please if you have it in your heart could you find a friend or officer to find my granddaughter? "

"If you cant afford to feed yourself then how can you afford a reward?" Ok so maybe the girl wasnt as gulible as Barj had assumed.

"I cannot afford to reward you in gold...but there is an item...a map..." This was a promising start now he had to quickly think of his next lie as he pretended to hesitate by the weight of what he was proposing.

" Map ...what kind of map?" The girl was narrowing her eyes as she regarded him suspiciously. What were Fauna interested in anyway? A treasure map seemed to obvious. An idea came to him .

"There's a map to a place just out the city , its a ruin of a castle , but under that ruin are tunnels that lead to various ancient places. I never traveled very far in my youth ...to dark but...Maybe a fauna could explore it and see whats down there.." He showed her the map , it was authentic and what he had said was in truth , but he would never have to sacrifice the map , she would long be gone to some remote area by then.

" I'll keep an eye out for her." she said not promising anything and being snobby about it . But he had already caught the curiosity in her eyes.
