Chapter 9
Kanan's P.O.V
I arose from a nice peaceful sleep and looked around to see Hera and Sabine were gone. I saw that Ezra was still sleeping on his cot and decided to let him sleep. I got off my cot and quietly made my way to a different room to get ready for the day.
*Stay calm and skip on*
I left the room when I had my new clothes on, hair brushed and teeth brushed. I looked over to see Ezra sitting up on his cot rubbing his eyes. He looked at my and stopped rubbing his eyes. "Morning Ezra," I said with a gentle smile and walked over to him slowly not to scare him.
His habit started but luckily he didn't move, yet seemed tense when I sat next to him. I sighed and said, "Look Ezra, I feel bad for what I did to you and Rex yesterday and I wanted to make it up to you today," I said making him look up at me. I saw a the slightest of a smile on his face.
"What....you do?" He asked me. I chuckled and said, "It's and surprise." He gave me a 'disappointed' look and I laughed a bit. "Come on, I'm sure Hera and Sabine will think that we are slackers while we're still in here," I said and we both got up. Ezra went to get ready and I waited.
After he was done, we left the hut to search for Hera and Sabine. We found them a couple of minutes later helping reorganize some crates. We went over and Hera gave us a smile. "Morning boys," she said, "Could you help us separate these crates?" "Why are you doing that?" I asked. "They gave us a job and would pay us if we helped work," Sabine said moving a hovering crate to a pile.
"Sure," Ezra said and walked over to help, I followed shortly after. "Great," Hera said, "The blue crates are food and the reddish purplish one is spare parts." "They still look red to me," Sabine said. "They look purple to me still," Hera replied. "Were you two arguing over what color those crates were?" I asked amused.
"Maybe," they both said and carried on with the job. Me and Ezra looked at each other and laughed a bit then went to grab a crate. I went over to a blue crate. I saw a little panel on the side of it and wondered which button to press to lift it. I looked over at Ezra and he seemed to not notice the panel yet. Hera walked over and said, "Press the red button to make it hover."
She demonstrated by pushing a button on the side of the reddish purplish crate making it hover off the ground a little. I looked over and saw Ezra watching how to lift the crate. I think he found the panel cause he reached for something and the crate started to hover. I smiled and pressed the red button making mine hover too.
We all worked until the small mountain of crates were all sorted into two piles. "Nicely done with the crates!" I turned around to see Ahsoka walking over carrying a little sack. "Here as promised," Ahsoka said and handed Hera the sack. "Thank you, Ahsoka," Hera said and Ahsoka replied with a 'no problem.' Then she walked off to continue her work.
"How much did we get?" I asked. "$40 dollars," Hera said, "I'm going back to the hut and Sabine I need your help on something." "Ok," Sabine said and the two girls walked away. I looked over at Ezra and asked, "Do you want to go see you and Rex's surprise?" Ezra nodded excitedly and followed me to find the gramps himself.
We found Rex at the round hologram table that he was at yesterday with Ezra. Ezra ran over to Rex with a smile. Rex saw Ezra and fumbled with the holo table that turned off. He cleared his throat before saying, "Ezra, what a surprise to see you up and at it." What was that about? What was Rex hiding? I walked over and stood near Ezra and said, "I wanted to apologize for yesterday by showing you a surprise."
Rex raised an eyebrow, "What would that be?" "Well, I'm going to have to take you there cause it's a place," I said. "It is thoughtful that you want to apologize and I appreciate that, "Rex said, "Thanks for the offer but I'm going to have to decline." "Why?" Ezra asked Rex curiously. Rex glanced and the holo table quickly before looking back at us. "I'm busy," was all he said making me more suspicious.
Ezra seemed like he was going to say something but I cut him off by putting a hand on his shoulder. He looked up at me and I shook my head no. Ezra kept his mouth closed. "Alright, then I guess we'll be going," I said and guided Ezra away from Rex. Once we were at a safe distance, Ezra gave me a confused look.
"Sorry Ezra, I still have this nagging feeling about Rex and this rebellion," I said and looked over at Rex. I faced back to Ezra to see him roll his eyes. "Do you want me to show you the surprise?" I asked. He gave me a huge excited smile and nodded. I waved my hand for him to follow and he did.
A while ago, I found a trail that lead up the mountain and it had an amazing view. I wanted to show it to Ezra sometime and I guess that time is now. I went behind the boulders followed by Ezra. He looked a little surprised about the trail. "You want to go see what's up there?" I asked and getting a nod from him. We hiked up the mountain until we made it to a small look-out area.
I looked at the breath taking view and took in the fresh mountain air. "What do you think?" I asked him. Ezra kept staring at the view and I made sure not to get close to the ledge so he wouldn't look down a faint. "Ezra?" I asked again and he finally looked up at me. He pointed at the view and said, "Pretty." I chuckled and nodded saying, "Yeah, it's pretty alright." We sat down and gazed at the green trees and the river cutting through it.
"How find?" I heard Ezra ask. "I found it when Ahsoka was giving us a tour of the place," I replied. We were up here for almost an hour and I enjoyed the time I was spending with Ezra. "Thanks f-for showing m-me," Ezra said and I gave him a side hug. "No problem," I said. I felt Ezra lay his head on my shoulder.
After a while, we stood up and headed back towards the village. We met Hera and Sabine back at the hut and are lunch. "Where did you two run off to?" Sabine asked taking a bite out of her soup. "Just having some bro time," I said and Ezra quickly covered his mouth so he wouldn't spit out broth from laughing.
He calmed down enough to swallow it and glared at me. "Not cool," was all he said and the girls laughed when I held up my arms in defense.
*Time to skip*
Me and Ezra went back up to the spot to watch the sun set on the horizon. "K-anan?" Ezra asked. "Yeah?" I asked and looked over at him. "You s-scared o-f Rex?" He asked with a hint of curiosity in his eyes. I looked back at the settings sun and said, "I'm cautious of him. He just seems off to me at times."
Ezra nodded then began to yawn. "You ready to head back?" I asked and he shook his head no. He laid his head on my shoulder and I slung my arm over his shoulders. I hummed the tune of the song Depa taught me when I was little and rubbed Ezra's arm a little bit.
"Somewhere over the mountain
Somewhere in the air
Darling, we are souring
Like two birds in a pair
Somewhere through the trees
Somewhere under the sea
Lies a whole new world
For you and me,"
I sang and then heard soft snoring under my ear. I smiled knowing that Ezra fell asleep. 'Works every time,' I thought and looked up at the sky saying out loud, "I wish you could be here telling me that again mom." I sat there for a while until I had to be mean and wake up Ezra. I shook him and he shot up looking around.
"You ok?" I asked and he nodded a bit shaken. "Nightmare?" I asked and he hesitated before nodding. "How about you sleep with me tonight then when we get back," I said, "I'm sure Hera and Sabine are worried sick." "O-k," I agreed and we both stood up and stretched.
I walked over to the side of the ledge and carefully went over to see the village. I didn't have to get to close to see the small village below. Ezra came up behind me and looked too. Yet, we weren't expecting to see the small village being burned down.
