Chapter 6
Ezra's P.O.V
It was exactly an hour ago and I'm still wide awake with the same sentence repeating in my head. "He killed Depa, my step-mother." Kanan's voice still rings through my ears. I looked over at Kanan's cot and saw his sleeping form. What happened to his step-mother? Why did Rex kill her? How did Kanan manage to survive the attack?
I get that I was two years old when I was on the streets surviving but I wonder sometimes on how others survived it too. At other times, I can't help but think that me and Kanan have a lot in common. Rich and poor, who would have thought that two different people could have so much in common.
Of course, there was Sabine too and she couldn't be to much older than me. Somehow she stayed the same like the normal poor class person would be. Then there was Hera, I don't know much about her past but she still had some similarities of what my mother had. Kindness and bravery, would be the to best words.
I wasn't able to fall asleep and with everything that has been going on, I would be surprised if I had a wink of sleep. I rolled off my cot and slowly but surely made my way to the door of our hut. I opened the door which let out a slight creak. I looked over a was lucky to see them all sleeping still. I sighed and exited to hut and closed the door behind me.
I scanned the area then sat down next the the hut. I looked up at the stars. It was very silent night with a breeze that was a bit chilly. I heard the door creak open next to me. I looked up to see Sabine standing at the door. "Ezra?" She said and came out, shutting the door. "What are you doing out here?" She asked.
"Couldn't sleep," I said then turned my attention back to the stars. Sabine must of noticed that I was looking at them and sat next to me. "I remember..." Sabine started and I looked at her, waiting for her to continue. "Something that our mom said to us before we went to sleep," she said. I was interested and gestured for her to continue.
"I think it went, star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, "she continued, "I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight." Then suddenly a flashback came to me and I saw mom telling us that same that Sabine just said. But there was more, "Remember to never judge a person on how they look, but on how they act. Then maybe someday, you could change there lives in a good or bad way. But that's their decision and you can change it..."
"...into..something a-amazing," I said the last part out loud without even realizing it. Then I stood up suddenly when I snapped back into reality. "Ezra? Are you ok?" Sabine asked, "You look like you've seen a ghost." I ignored Sabine and walked off to find someone. "Ezra!" Sabine called and began to follow me. "Rex," was all I said and kept sneaking around the small village.
"What about Rex?" Sabine asked confused. "Find," was all I said. "Why do you want to find him?" Sabine asked. I was getting irritated with all the questions and decided to just to stay silent. Evidently, Sabine had different thoughts and ran in front of me. She held a tight grip on my arms and looked me straight in the eyes. "Please tell me," she said, "I want to help but you aren't telling me everything."
I sighed again and began to explain, "I ease drop." Sabine let go of me and we both sat down next to a different hut. "Who were you ease dropping on?" She asked. "K-Kanan, Hera," I said, "They talk a-about Rexx, kill Kanan mommy." I started to rub my fingers against my palm in nervousness and sadness.
"What else?" Sabine asked. "Want to know Rex story," I said. "Then we will do it tomorrow," my sister reassured me and laid a hand on my shoulder. I nodded and we headed back to the hut we were staying in. We had to sneak past a couple of guards but made it back to the hut. Me and Sabine quietly laid on our cots. Sleep finally took me in its arms and closed my eyes.
When I woke up, sunlight stretched through the window. I sat up and rubbed my eyes then looked around to see the other cots empty. I got off my cot and went outside to see the little village wide awake at work. Kanan, Hera and Sabine were a couple steps away, talking with Ahsoka. I walked over then stopped when I saw Rex.
I looked at my family but decided to walk over to Rex. He was talking to that Sato guy about something. Sato saw me, "Hello Ezra, enjoying your time here?" I nodded my head and looked at Rex, "Talk." "Excuse me?" Rex asked confused. "Me talk w-with you," I said. "You want to talk with me?" Rex asked. I nodded my head.
"Alright, I'll talk with you later Commander," Rex told Sato. Sato nodded and walked off to do something else. "What did you want to talk about?" Rex asked. I looked over at my family and Ahsoka to see Kanan glancing over at us on occasions. Rex caught where I was looking and Kanan gave him a little glare for a split second. "Talk later," I said, "in private." "Alright," Rex said, "oh, and by the way, no offense or anything but why are you talking like that if I may ask?"
I looked at Rex and said, "ASD o-or Autism." "Oh, I'm sorry if I offended you in any way," Rex apologized, "I was just curious." I knew how he felt cause I was to, "Curiosity kill cat." Rex laughed and smiled, "you got me." "We even when talk private," I said and walked away without another word. I walked over to my family and Ahsoka.
"Hey kiddo," Kanan said slinging an arm around me. I smiled and leaned into his side, "Hi." "Now that you are all here, how about I show you around, " Ahsoka said. "That would be great," Hera said and we started the tour around the village. I wasn't paying attention most of the time because my mind wandered to Rex and why he would kill Kanan's step-mom. I guess I'll know some other time.
