Chapter 13
Hera's P.O.V
We've been in this place for almost a week and never had the chance to see Kanan yet. I've tried to convince the doctors to let me and the children see him but insisted that I shouldn't. I was getting ticked off and walked over to see if Rex and Ahsoka could help me.
"Greetings Hera," Ahsoka chirped and I smiled. "Morning Commander Rex and Ahsoka," I said then frowned, "Can I talk with you two for a second. The two looked at each other and nodded a bit worried. "What is it?" Rex asked. "I have been asking to see Kanan for this past week but the doctors say that we shouldn't. Do you think you can convince them?"
"I'll go and talk with them," Ahsoka said and headed over to the doctors. "So, how's Ezra and Sabine doing?" Rex asked me. I sighed, "Not good. Ezra keeps complaining about his leg and I think there might be something wrong with it," I said, "Sabine seems off too but not physically more.....mentally." "I'm sure that you're doing everything you can to help them through this," Rex said and I nodded.
"I just think that they need to do something to get there minds off of the war," I said. "Yeah..." Rex said but didn't get to finish when Ahsoka returned. "Rex, may I speak with you?" She asked and glanced at me nervously then back to Rex, ".....privately...." Rex didn't like the tone of her voice as much as I did but still nodded. "Before you go," I said and they both looked at me, "How's my husband and can we see him?"
"Patience Hera," Ahsoka reassured, "You will get to see him......just not now." "I've been hearing that way to many times than I would like," I muttered then walked back to my families little spot. When I was back, Sabine was still depressed and Ezra was still in the same spot that he was put. "Hey you two," I greeted them. Sabine just sat and stared at the ground mindlessly while Ezra looked up and waved with a smile.
I smiled back then looked over at Sabine. I walked over to her and shook her a little. Sabine jumped in fright before she saw that it was me. "Oh...hi," she said but not in her peppy, cheerful voice. "Alright, that's it," I said crossing my arms, "Sabine, tent, now." She seemed frighten which twisted my heart but I wasn't going to let her stay like this even in the situation we've put ourselves into isn't the greatest.
Sabine nodded and stood up with her arms crossed and looking at the ground then walked to the tent. I sighed and saw Ezra with worry in his eyes. "Don't worry," I said, "I'm going to fix her." Ezra raised an eyebrow then realization popped in his eyes and nodded. "Bring back, S-Sabine," he said and I nodded with determination.
I walked into the tent and saw Sabine sitting on her cot. "Who are you and what have you done with Sabine?" I asked with crossed arms, "You aren't the cheery Sabine that I know." The artist looked up at me with dull eyes like she hasn't slept in forever. "It's nothing," she said then looked back at the ground. "You sound just like Ezra," I said smirking a little.
Sabine didn't look up or reply, just starred at the ground. I shook my head and sat down next to Sabine. "Look, I know times right now are really confusing and terrifying but I'm here to help but I can't do that unless you talk with me," I said. "Why should I tell you anything?" Sabine muttered, "It's not like you know how I feel." "I actually do know how you feel," I said, "but I would like to know what's bothering you."
"How would you know anything?" She snapped back. "Cause I know how it's like to be a little girl growing up in a war zone," I replied calmly. She looked up at me with sad eyes then back at the ground, "I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking." "It's alright," I reassured, "Can you tell me what's bothering you so I can help?" Sabine took a deep breath in and out then started to explain.
"Why is the Empire killing innocent people? I mean, they didn't do anything wrong so why attack and kill?" She asked. "Fear," was all I said making her look up at me and wanting to know more. "There are many ways to convince people to follow you but it's up to you to decide how you wanted to be seen as a leader," I said, "The Empire chose fear by threatening, killing, hurting and make them think that they aren't safe as long as you follow their rules."
"But people do follow rules and end up getting executed for no reason," she said and whispered the last part, "l-like the massacre of the poor class." I glanced over at Sabine with sadness, "Sometimes, they have to remove people to stay in power." "Why do you say that? None of the poor were thinking of starting a riot...unless..." Sabine paused and realized it. I continued her thought, "Unless they were going to join the rebellion or actually start a riot."
"Ok but what about those wealthy people running around in the forest right now?" I asked, "They would never have the guts to attack people like they did in the village." "You seen that they are acting differently this whole time ever since we left Capital City," I said thoughtful for a minute, "which means whatever happened to them has to do with Kallus." "You think he made them do everything that has happened?" Sabine asked. "I don't think," I said, "I know that Kallus would do something to destroy the rebellion and blame it on the rich."
"So he can stay in power," Sabine said, "We have to tell them what we found out." I stopped Sabine when I suddenly heard screaming. "What's going on?" She asked me. "I don't know," I said, "just stay here and I'll be right back." Sabine nodded as I stood up and peeked out the tent. I scanned the area until I saw Ahsoka and Rex yelling at the doctors, at least Rex is.
My curiosity got the best of me so I sneaked over and hid in a spot close enough so I can hear them talking. "You were supposed to keep an eye on your patients and all of you failed to go and see Kanan," Rex hissed deadly quiet. That had my attention and kept listening. "We are sorry, we were all very busy with other patients that needed us," a male doctor said.
"You all had a routine and not one of you followed it and now Kanan is in the hands of the Empire," Rex said angry and my heart stopped. That's why they told me it was for my own good, to keep me away so I wouldn't ask where he was so they didn't have to give me the news.
I kinda felt guilty for the doctors. It was always hard to give bad news to families about their loved ones if something bad happened. Yet this was worst than death, Kanan is in the hands of the Empire. Nothing is a worse situation than being in the middle of a war zone. I came out of my hiding spot and walked over angrily to Rex and Ahsoka.
Ahsoka noticed me and tensed then shouldered Rex to stop talking. He did when his eyes landed on me. "Oh, Hello Hera, what brings you here?" Ahsoka asked. I crossed my arms and said, "Funny, I could hear you from my tent and dying to see what all of you were talking about." Rex and Ahsoka's eyes widened and they seemed nervous.
"So, when were you going to tell me that my husband has been kidnapped by the Empire?" I asked. "Why are you mad at us?" Rex asked, "They are the ones that were keeping an eye on him." Rex pointed to the doctors and they looked at the ground in guilt. "Then what about you two?" I asked, "Aren't you supposed to make sure everything is where it's supposed to be?"
"What do you mean?" Ahsoka asked. "You two are in charge of this camp and you failed to make sure that this place was secure and that everyone alive was here," I said, "So don't blame your mistakes on others when you two were obviously in charge in making sure of it." "Also, give them some slack," I added and pointed to the doctors, "they have been working their butts off and were very busy taking care of other people that we haven't lost yet thanks to them."
Rex and Ahsoka looked guilty as ever. "She's right," Ahsoka admitted,"Doctors and nurses, we are very sorry for what we have done." "Yeah, and thank you for helping to help these people in their time of need," Rex said, "You all may go back to work." The doctors and nurses thanked me as they left to work. "Thank you too, Hera," Ahsoka said, "For helping us see that it was our fault." "Now, what about Kanan?" I asked.
"We will do our best to find a way to get him back," Ahsoka reassured me. I nodded and smiled at her. I was about to leave when she laid a hand on my shoulder. "But before you go," she said, "Me and Rex need to tell you something................about Ezra."
