Chapter three

I woke sometime in the middle of the night, Jade was curled around my feet snoring softly.

My stomach growled angrily at me, and I regretted not having eaten.

I shuffled around a bit trying not to wake Jade, but the room, while it had been very cold when I had first come in, was now rather warm. Finally, after a few minutes of struggle, I got my feet out from beneath the blanket, wait why was there a blanket in the first place I had flopped down without a care in the world.

I lay there confused for a moment, when suddenly I felt incredibly stupid, I looked over at the bed on the other side of the room, sure enough, it was occupied.

He looked to be tall with a thin build and dark black hair, but it was hard to tell anything else what with it being dark and my new roomie being asleep.

That was when I noticed the plate on the nightstand beside me it had bread, butter, and a hunk of cheese. It reminded me of prison food in some of the medieval books I had read, but I was thankful nonetheless.

As I ate my eyes wandered over once again to the stranger. I didn't even know who he was but he was one of the kindest people I had met in my life, and I was happy knowing that this person whoever he was would be my roommate for the rest of the year, and maybe even someone I could call my friend.

I snuggled back into the creaky bed letting Jade's soft snores lull me back to sleep.

The next time I opened my eyes it was morning, and Jade was no longer sleeping at my feet. I sat up the nights seemed far too quick in this place like every time you fall asleep morning is just a skip around a corner.

I looked around the room seeing it in daylight was a completely different feeling, everything was the same yet different, more vibrant.

The sun was shining through the window casting a dazzling light all throughout the room. I sighed just laying there soaking it all in today would be a new day, no dreams, no voices, just a new start something that I would make the best of.

I sat up looking around the room. My eyes instantly fell on my so far unnamed roommate he was sleeping soundly unbothered by the light flowing throughout the room.

At some point during the night Jade had made herself at home at the foot of my roommates bed, and had now gotten up and was investigating the new creature she had discovered. It wouldn't be long I supposed before he would be awake if not from the sun then from the dragon currently investigating his hair.

I hurriedly stood, retrieving my uniform that had fallen from my bed during the night, it was a little wrinkled, but hopefully not too badly. I wondered how my roommate would react when he woke up with a dragon in his hair.

Not wanting to find out I hightailed it out of there and into the hall.

Every door looked the same, a number on the wall alongside each room was the only difference marking them. I looked at the number next to the door determined to remember it.

113, the sign read almost whispering itself to me.

A shiver ran through my spine it seemed to be getting cold again man the thermostat was weird in this place.

I looked down both halls and randomly chose a direction trying to find the bathroom and hopefully a shower then started walking.

After a few minutes of wandering the halls, I came to a stop outside of what looked to be some sort of locker room. From the inside, I could hear water running, and a small bit of steam was streaming from underneath the door.

I pushed open the door where I was met with the amazing sight of lines of showers, all empty except for one.

I wandered over towards one of the stalls and flipped the water to its warmest setting letting the steam fill the room.

The water encompassed me in full, and for a moment I just stood there letting the water wash away the soreness of travel and leave me with nothing more than a clean slate for a new beginning.

It felt sorrowful to leave the pleasantly warm water, but I still had to figure out my schedule and where I was supposed to be going, maybe my roommate could help me figure it out, but then again I wasn't sure I wanted to bother him about it. How pathetic would that be not even knowing a single one of my classes?

I grabbed my uniform really looking at it for the first time I had been to exhausted the night before to even care anything about it, it was a pale blue reminding me of the sky on a cold snowy day.

I stepped back out into the long winding hallways feeling refreshed, now all I had to do was make it back to room 113 and hope that Jade hadn't caused too much trouble.

I tried to follow the path I had taken to get to the locker rooms, but it was no use I was just going to have to wander the halls until I found it.

Surprisingly it didn't take long after only about five or six minutes of looking I heard a surprised yelp, and simply followed it back to my room.

Jade had indeed been the one to wake mister sleepyhead, and from the look on his face, he wasn't too happy about it.

My roommate was holding Jade an arms-length away from him looking her sternly in the eye.

"No", he said his voice even and light. Jade looked him up and down squirming and trying to paw at his hair which came down to about the middle of his neck thick and curly black ringlets falling haphazardly into his golden orbs mesmerizingly bright and beautiful.

"She doesn't like being held like that", I quietly interjected as she pawed at his hair again.

He looked up at me focusing his bright almost glowing eyes on me, " this he said nodding his head at Jade, is your dragon"?

"That would be correct", I answered shrugging. "Did she wake you?"

He looked from me to Jade, and then back again, a look of shocked confusion plastered all over his face, he dropped his hands letting her free.

Jade immediately scampered over to me half jumping half flying up onto my shoulder snuggling into my still-damp hair.

"No, she didn't wake me just surprised me, my name's Myscheif by the way".

I smiled, "nice to meet you, I'm Ember".

Myscheif nodded, "the headmaster told me about you, although he didn't say anything about the dragon", he added shooting a glance at Jade.

"Oh um really", I asked nervously. The truth was I hadn't told anyone about Jade, not even my own parents, dragons were considered wild creatures who had no place in a home, but every time I looked into Jade's soft caramel eyes all I could see was someone who needed help, without a mother Jade would never have survived in the wild.

"I'm sure he just forgot to mention it," Myscheif yawned. "Just be sure she stays out of my hair when I'm sleeping please and thank you."

I could feel my grin growing bigger and bigger by the second, "I-I will, " the words came stammering from my mouth.

Myscheif smiled lopsidedly, and I thought I saw a glimpse of sliver pulse through one of his eyes, but when I tried to look closer it was gone.

"So, Myscheif started, do you know where you're supposed to go for first period"?

I shook my head wishing I had asked Mr. Woodbrook more questions.

He nodded seemingly unsurprised. "The headmaster is a forgetful man, I'm guessing he didn't give you your schedule either"?

I shook my head.

Myscheif sighed, okay then so why did you come here it's awfully late in the year for you to just be starting.

I shrunk into myself a little bit, it felt weird even thinking about telling someone.

"I've- been having some problems," I admitted softly almost more to myself I was so quiet.

"And you don't want to talk about it," Myscheif finished.

I nodded, grateful to not have to explain myself.

"Well then, Myscheif sighed, what kind of ability do you have that could point us in at least the right direction.

I closed my eyes concentrating for a moment until a weak flame sputtered to life in my hand.

Myscheif looked at my hand, "right then so fire, that would be Mrs. Lyn.

Authors note

So I'm not really sure how I feel about the way I ended it but we are still only just starting I don't want the chapters to go on forever.

What do you all think of Myscheif he is definitely one of my favorite characters I've made so far.
