The Oath
~In brightest day, there will be Light. To cleanse the soul and set wrongs right. When Darkness Falls, look to the skies.~
Bruce felt his lungs draw in a gasp of air, his heart stammering back to life in his chest. His body was shaking, like the echoes of power were trapped beneath his flesh.
~A New Dawn comes let there be light!~
His skin itched, raw against his costume. And when he opened his eyes he was almost blinded by the white walls that surrounded him. Looking closer, he saw people who all wore white robes over a form of armour. Scanning them all, he noticed they all wore a white ring.
~In brightest day, there will be Light. To cleanse the soul and set wrongs right.~
Each figure was chanting the same, and staring off in one direction. And when Bruce looked, he noticed what looked to be one large lantern, and from within glowed one of the brightest colours Bruce had ever seen. It looked white, but when he stared at it for too long the colour seemed to shift, spiraling out in a multitude of colours. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, pink. All the colours spiraled out, filling the room before disappearing as he blinked.
~When Darkness Falls, look to the skies. A New Dawn comes let there be light!~
Bruce's finger twitched, and he looked down, noticing the dull white ring fitted on his finger. He lifted his hand, not sure when someone had managed to fit the ring on his finger. His chest stung with a phantom ache, like it was trying to prompt him. He curled his hand, watching as the ring tried to spark to life but fizzled out.
~In brightest day, there will be Light. To cleanse the soul and set wrongs right.~
The ache in his chest grew stronger, stinging with the sharpness he had come to expect with being shot. Bruce felt his voice catch in the back of his throat as the chanting grew louder, like drums within his brain. But his body still shook, as weak as a newborn deer calf.
~When Darkness Falls, look to the skies.~
Bruce could recognise the situation as clearly as anything. It was the swearing in as a Lantern. They were chanting the oath he was meant to swear to charge his ring for the first time. Guiding him towards his new path, trying to push against his hesitance.
~A New Dawn comes let there be light!~
The chant was loud, echoing in Bruce's ears. The words trying to sink deep, rattling within him, trying to force him forwards. But his body didn't obey, too weak in where he laid against the white steps before him. He felt too impure to be here, dirty against the glowing white surrounding him.
~In brightest day, there will be Light.~
But the words felt like chalk, refusing to come up. "In brightest day—" When he tried it felt like he was choking, the words catching in the back of his throat. He couldn't get it working. "I-In brightest day—" Not when he felt the tug again, trying to get him to swear.
In brightest day, in blackest night
That was Hal's voice, as clear as day within Bruce's mind. And the words fell from Bruce's lips, feeling natural and right. "In brightest day," the words were settled within him, like the missing piece, "in blackest night." The words were soft, spoken in a way that portrayed how terrified he was to be told to stop.
~To cleanse the soul and set wrongs right.~
There was more force behind the chant as the White Lanterns started to realise something was slipping from the normal path. The human was showing hesitation in ways they had never seen before. But the man would swear, for they all served the light in the end.
No evil shall escape my sight
The words were not stopping. Hal's voice was clear, like the man was standing with Bruce, charging his ring. "No evil shall escape my sight." It came out stronger as Bruce slowly rose to his feet, a low energy burning through him. All around him the chanting grew louder, trying its hardest to drown out his thoughts.
~When Darkness Falls, look to the skies.~
The chanting was slowly starting to die off as the White Lanterns around Bruce started to work out that something was wrong. The human who walked before them was not repeating their words but recalling something else. Flashes of green filled the different White Lanterns eyes, even as their own White oath fell from their lips.
Let those who worship evil's might
The words fell from Bruce's lips the same time they fell from Hal's. "Let those who worship evil's might." Bruce has listened to this oath thousands of times, the words burned into his brain. He could say this oath, one he's spent years unknowingly living by. The ring was slowly shaking on his finger, sending pulsing waves of power up his arm. A white force creeping up his suit, covering it in a form of armour. He slowly walked forwards, drawn towards the brightness of the lantern.
~A New Dawn comes let there be light!~
There were only a handful of White Lanterns still chanting. Most had fallen silent as they stared at the human before them. The air was humming from the power of the lantern, resonating as it accepted the new Lantern. But they couldn't help but see the light spreading out, the green wrapping itself around the white shadow.
Beware my power, Green Lanterns Light!
"Beware my power," Bruce said, feeling his feet stop at the edge of the lantern, the white almost blinding him. His ring was almost shivering with excitement, calling out loudly as Bruce raised it towards the heart of the lantern. "White Lanterns Light!"
The words burst out of Bruce like a declaration from deep within. The pain in his chest felt like it exploded, before suddenly shrinking back, drawing all aches from Bruce as the white energy shot up his arm. His eyes were blinded by the dancing colours; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, pink.
And when Bruce blinked back the colour, he found the white light settled around him. His once torn Batsuit made a-new with white light. His cloak was replaced by a floating sheet of energy moving behind him.
When he scanned the room, all eyes were on him. The White Lanterns stared in silent shock at the glowing suit of armour surrounding him, at the echo of the oath in their ears. The echo of a white so bright, it almost felt green.
Bruce turned back to look into the lantern, and for a split second, Bruce almost thought he could see Hal staring back at him in shock. But when he blinked again, the image was gone, leaving his staring at the White Lanterns heart.
