Chapter 9: Not another one
It has been 2 weeks since Rosy's argument with Jack and he hasn't said anything to her. I didn't even think someone could stay quite for that long? I tried talking to him but he's not listening. Did I do something wrong? What did I do?
A knock sounded off the door, food has come and none of us made a move to get it. The guard grunted and dropped the food on the floor, some of it falling out as it hit the ground.
"Jack..." Rosy started then she stopped, if he didn't want to talk to her, she wouldn't talk to him. Two can play this game. Leaning her head against the gate she touched her neck where her scar was. She didn't remember how she got it but she knew whatever happened it wasn't because of Jack.
"Rosy," Jack started as if in pain Rosy looked at him, it has been a while since she heard his voice. "Yes?" Rosy waited looking at him. "Can you stop talking?" He said closing his eyes again. What is wrong with you? He acting like... like. Like I did the first time we met. I get it! I was irritating you don't have to do it back! Rosy screamed in her mind for Jack to hear but only heard silence.
The door opened and instantly Jack was at her side his hand around her, pulling her closer to him. It was weird though, no one came in here without knocking. "Jack," someone said before the door fully opened, Jack relaxed and sat back down, away from her. "Yeah Carter?" Jack asked sounding like he didn't care.
Carter came into view and Rosy couldn't help but gasp, he looked very very familiar, almost unnerving. If I ever get my memories back it will be to soon. She felt like she had met him, she didn't know who he was, but it wasn't Carter.
He smiled at her, a not very nice smile, "So your Rosy? My if I do say so myself you have grown up to be quite big," he said coming to put a finger under her chin for her to look up at him. Maybe he's not who I think he is?
"What do you want Carter?" Jack said sounding irritated. "Great she can't take her eyes off him. He's older than he looks!" Jack mutter to himself to soft for anyone but Carter to hear, but if he heard he didn't turn to acknowledge him.
"Well you know what's coming don't you Jack?" Carter said looking at Jack tilting his head. "Umm I haven't really been keeping track of what's been going on," Jack shakes his head, giving Carter a questionable work. "Oh boy! Oh boy, oh boy! No one knows," Carter said bring his hand to his heart as if he were in pain.
Rosy looked at Jack who looked back at her, he smiled a little and shrugged his shoulders. "Why, it's the ball," Carter said clapping his hands in excitement. No no no. "Yes, yes, yes, and I want you both to come," Carter told them, leaving no run for argument. Did I say that out loud?
Carter threw their bags at them, which held their clothes. He hugged Jack goodbye and took Rosy's hand in his, giving it a tight squeeze, almost to tight. Something flash across his eyes but it was quickly gone as he smiled and walked away.
Rosy looked at her dress and blushed. It was very similar to the dress she tried on for the Midnight Ball but her mom hadn't liked it. Of course it would look familiar I tried on every dress that day. The dress was black with lines of blue across the dress.
With the dress came a black mask with 3 black feathers and one blue feather. Rosy gave a look of disgust and threw the dress across the room. There is no way I'm going. "Rosy we have to go," Jack replied as he looked at the dress across the room.
"You can go, I'm NOT going," she explained looking away from him. Great I think I liked him better when he wasn't talking. "Rosy we have to go," he said seriously but turned to give her a smile, "who knows maybe it will be fun?"
"It won't," Rosy said remembering Richard. I will kill you if it's the last thing I'll do. His words that he called out to her as she ran away sent chills down her spine. He's coming.
"Why don't you like it?" He said turning his full attention to her now. "Why do you like it so much?" She shot back still not looking at him. "I wouldn't say I like it," he said looking at his tuxedo. "I was hoping to go with you though," he replied looking at her but something was off.
"Well I'm not going, and that's final," she crossed her arms, her back against the gate and didn't move. "Okay how about a contest? Whoever wins gets to choose what they want to do," he turned to her and pull her to turn to him as he said it. Don't do it. It's a trick! I know but I'm so curious can I just ask what it is? Who's to say I can't win right? "What is it?" Rosy whispered, as Jack smiled brighten. What did I just do?
"No," Rosy shook her head crossing her arms, your kidding me right. There is no way in the world I could win at that. "Ah, but now you have to do it," Jack smiled looking at me as if we started.
"That's not fair you know I can't win a stare contest, I'm so tired I can barely keep my eyes open," Rosy replied closing her eyes. "Oh so your one of those people huh?" Jack sighed turning away from her closing his eyes to. Shooting up she opened her eyes and looked at him, "like one of those people who what?" She said irritated.
He opened one eye at her and closed it again smiling a little. "One of those people who make excuses to get out of something. I thought you were better than that, but I guess I was wrong," he said smiling now. He was just trying to irritate her and it was working.
"No I'm serious, I'm to tired I would lose and you know it. Why can't you pick something else?" Rosy begged, hoping he would change his mind but he didn't. "No fine whatever. Let's just not do it anymore okay," he sounded irritated. Rosy looked at him and bit her lip. I can do this, though I lose every game I played, I can do this. I only lose every game because I played with my friend Whiskers who can't blink. So yeah. I can do this! "Fine let's start then."
"Okay on a count of three," Jack started as we faced each other. "1" Rosy heard she started closing her eyes, I have to do this. "2" we are almost there. "3!" Jack shouted as Rosy's eyes opened to see Jack already staring at her, smiling. I can do this. I can do this.
"I can't do this," Rosy said blinking. She had lost. How did Jack do it? We had our eyes open for minutes! Jack burst out laughing, he was laughing so hard Rosy expected him to die of laughter. "Wow you lasted 10 seconds. You were right you can't play," he laughed wiping away tears from his eyes his laughter echoing in the room.
"No way! I lasted way longer then that," Rosy accused looking in Jack in disbelief. "Nope I kept track," he said his laughter slowing down. "Wow. See I told you I was bad," Rosy said as if she said it a million times before.
"Okay, to be honest I..." Jack started when the door opened revealing someone Rosy didn't know. "What are you doing here, Nadar?" Jack growled immediately at Rosy's side. Nadar?
Nadar smiled at Rosy and made his way to her. Jack stood up and pushed him away from her, his back hitting the wall, making a loud cracking noise. "Jack!" Rosy screamed at Jack and tried to get around him to check if Nadar was okay, but before she could reached him Jack circled his arms around her keeping her close to him.
"Wow some welcoming," Nadar said laughing and wincing at pain. Rosy tried to get out of Jack's arms to help him. Great she wants to go to him when he hurt her Jack thought as he groaned, making Rosy look at him, she stopped struggling and just stayed in his arms.
"I just came to see if Rosy was going to the ball. I hope to see her there," Nadar said smiling, he was definitely hiding something. Nadar came to Rosy touching her hand, gasping she pulled her hand away as Jack pushed him away. Subconsciously she touched her neck, the one with the scar, as she stared at Nadar. Does she remember? No she couldn't have she was sleeping, Jack sighed hugging her tighter.
"Ohh I see am I..." But before Nadar could finish Jack let go of Rosy pushed Nadar out the door and closed the door in his face. Rosy started to laugh as Jack gave her a look as if she were crazy. "Sorry," she said still laughing, "You should have seen his face as you closed the door."
She stopped, making a serious face and they both started laughing. It was to much, just that whole situation it was laughable.
"Jack umm..." she trailed off, I going to sound ridiculous. "What is it?" He said curiously looking at her, his head tilted slightly. "No nevermind," Rosy said shaking her head. She leaned her head against the wall sighing. His hands felt familiar and not in a good way.
"Rosy tell me," Jack said moving so he was in front of her. Still with her eyes closed she replied, "Nothing nevermind. I was just going to say I'm tired that's all." Jack took her hand in his and turned her head so she had to open her eyes. Facing her he smiled a little, "Tell me."
"It's just, no, you'll think I'm crazy," Rosy said sitting back turning her head away from him. "I don't think your crazy," he said laughing as Rosy turned. "I know your crazy," they both started laughing. Yeah I am pretty crazy.
"It's going to sound crazy," Rosy repeated, how could I know something like that anyway? "Okay I like crazy. Come on tell me," he said taking Rosy's hands and locking her eyes with his so she couldn't look away. "Do you... know that guy that came...early?" She said slowly, touching her scar then bring her hand down. "Why do you ask?" Jack questioned raising an eyebrow at her.
"It's just..." she trailed off touching her scar again. "Rosy..." Jack started but Rosy quickly interrupted him. "Was he... I mean is he connected to my umm... scar in anyway."
"Rosy," Jack started but stopped. "It's just his touch reminded me of something I... don't know what though. See I told you I would sound crazy," Rosy started laughing. "Rosy," he turned to her, regret in his eyes, "I'm going to tell you something, but please don't hate me when I'm done," he waited for her to nod her head then he began.
"It's all my fault I let him in," he said reaching the end of the story. "He had a dagger in his hand and you in the other. When I took a step closer he pressed the dagger further in," he continued as her eyes grew wide, but she didn't really look to surprised.
"He asked me why I liked you but I didn't say anything, and I didn't move. Disappointed I guess he moved to press the dagger all the way in, but I got to you in time but when I moved you it created a cut across your neck. I'm sorry it's my fault you have that scar," he couldn't even look at her anymore he was so disappointed in himself.
"Jack I don't blame you. I wouldn't even be alive if it wasn't for you," she said taking his hand, smiling. He didn't tell Nadar he liked me because he doesn't. Why do I feel so... forgotten, and unloved? Why do I care? But she did. She let go of his hand and turned her around so she wasn't facing him.
"That explains the familiar feeling I guess," Rosy chuckled closing her eyes, suddenly really tired. Before she went off to sleep she heard Jack whisper, "I do like you Rosy."
