The Lady: Part. 34

A wooly, woozy feeling tingles through my body; I've never been drunk but I imagine that feeling to be what I'm experiencing right now. I guess I'm drunk on relief.

Kelly looks like she's feeling the same as me as she's got the same smile that she can't drop, "Or man, am I glad you jumped the car, I was literally gonna make mincemeat of you guys," she says.

"Tell me about it sis, we thought we were about to be minced," adds Kade.

Troy steps in, "Profound apologies, but we thought you were members of the underground team, and Drew has given us orders to obliterate on spot," he says, with his apologetic tone.

"Drew's alive, what about Tony?" I ask.

Troy nods, "Both alive and in the living quarters, hard at work while looking after baby Belinda," he explains.

Kade hugs me tight, "How'd you guys get here?" He asks.

Kelly looks at him as if he's asked a stupid question, "We flew, by plane, how else would we get here?" She asks.

Kade shrugs his shoulders, "Well we got here via underground tube train, from London," he says, looking at me and adding, "at least I think that's how we got here," a sudden doubt in his eyes.

Kelly and Troy exchange glances and high-five, "Yeah, mum did it," announces Kelly.

I'm bemused by her celebratory tone, "She blew herself up because her procedure failed, is that what you mean?" I ask.

Kelly links my arm and guides Kade and I around the side of the hummer, "Yes, she did that, taking the gleesome threesome: Helga, Marko and Bertie with her. But she told us of her last engineering feat for The Surgeon's people was a supersonic speed underground link from London to the states; her main concern was timing the explosion while saving the underground link, which she obviously achieved," she explains.

Kade's still not his full self, "Did she know we were going to be on that train?" He asks, an accusatorial lilt in his voice.

Kelly shrugs her shoulders, "I guess so, but I suppose we'll never really know, she's not here to tell us," she says.

"Mum planned a whole lot more than she ever told us, that's for sure," says Kade, slightly pissed.

Troy interjects, "But right now we ought to celebrate our collective survival." He opens the hummer door, "Jump in, let's get you home, showered, fed and watered he says," his hand gesticulating inside the cab.

Kade raises his hand, "If you guys don't mind, we'll walk back?"

I look at him, "You sure that's a good idea?" I ask.

Kade shrugs, "It's an idea, who knows if it's a good one," he says, staring out into the distance.

There's a collective pause, before Kelly says, "Wait!" and jumps into the hummer.

Within seconds she leaps out, "Here," she says, handing us both a fly pack.

......

It feels good to have these incredible pieces of tech back on our backs. Once we've both adjusted them, Kelly hands us each a gun, "Mum said take no prisoners, shoot to kill." She says.

Troy, ever the optimist jumps in with, "But of course, these are just a precautionary measure; Tony and Drew are monitoring underground activity and they don't envision any undergrounders ascending, this afternoon."

......

Watching the hummer retreat into the broken remains of the warehouse building that leads down into our old living quarters, I ask Kade, "Why do you want to walk back?"

He takes my hand, "I want to take you somewhere," he says, leading me forward.

The sky is clear, the sun high and the only sound is the dry rustle of our feet on gravely ground.

"Where we going Kade?" I ask.

Still staring blankly ahead, he says, "We're going on a date. After recent events, we both need a date day."

"I can think of more romantic places for a date – and a shower would be welcome before our date." I suggest.

He stops suddenly, looks up at the sky, glances over his shoulder, down at the ground, before settling his eyes on me. He nods his head and has a closed mouth smirk as he puts his arm around my shoulder, "This is it Tan, the perfect spot for our first date," he says, his free hand grappling in his pocket.

I have a hopeful lift, "This is our first date, a new start?" I ask.

He swivels his head, "No." He pulls the old photograph from his pocket and holds it aloft, "This spot was literally our first date, where we met when we were five year old kids," he says, beaming.

Looking at the image, I note the same gravely ground and baron landscape that we now stand in, as adults.

I note Kade is actually beaming, his smile is infectious, "Kade, why do you look so joyful," I say, matching his smile.

He squeezes my shoulder, "Because the evil girl on the underground train said 'when we reach our beginning The Lady will end.' He looks at his torso, "The last line of my body etching, But back to their beginning they were led. And once there, The Surgeon's people said, if they meet again, The Lady will be_ _ _ _.

"Dead!" I finish the poem for him.

He nods, "But you're not, you're still very much fighting fit, literally," he says, putting the photograph back in his pocket.

Kade cups my face, "Will you come fly with me?"

"Sure I will," I say, as we both power up our fly packs.

......

Together we zoom skywards and as we do, my heart goes boom – because I feel Kade and I are back on track.

We hover over the single remaining track of the Love Rush and Kade takes my face in his hands, "I can't wait to get back in the shower with you," he says, with a knowing smirk.

"Will you scrub my back?" I ask.

His smirk snaps into a smile, "Oh, I'll do much more than that."

"Really, what else do you have in store?" I ask.

"Let's just say the 'refreshing tingle' will be courtesy of the Kade, and not the shower gel," he says, with a flirty wink.

......

Afterwards we are both exhilarated and luxuriate in dressing in fresh clean clothes.

Drew hugs and holds us both so tight that we struggle to breathe for the duration. He looks different, more male and with a macho demeanor to match his deepened voice. He turns around, "Tony, say hello to your sister and her husband Kade.

My brother rises from his computer terminal and turns to us, "Welcome back Tanya and Kade. I am very happy to see you both successfully returned," he says, with a rehearsed canter, before returning to his seat and studying the familiar monitors and terminals that populate the room.

When we had last been in these premises, they had been emptied of all furniture and home ware. Now, although it's not the exactly the same as before, it still feels like home.

Kade makes for what he always saw as the heart of our home, the kitchen. "Fried chicken, fries and salad, how does that sound?" He asks, opening the fridge like a child opening the door on Christmas morning.

He gets a resoundingly positive response from all of us.

I join Kelly and Troy on the couches, "Thanks guys, you've fixed the place up real nice," I say.

They both respond with warm words, but I'm only half listening. Instead I bask in the warm glow that I feel while watching Kade busy in the kitchen. I'd almost forgotten the passion that he pours into preparing food, to nurture and sustain the people he loves – it's an awesome sight to behold.

......

After feasting Kade sits back and asks, "So how'd we get down to that underground facility and finish these people off?"

Drew wastes no time in bringing us all back to reality with his no nonsense business talk, "That's no underground facility, it's a vast underground world. Remember, until recently it was the only world I knew, to dismiss it as a mere 'facility' is to undermine its danger." He says, swigging back coffee before continuing, "All of us in this room have experienced what they are doing..."

... Kade cuts him off, "What are they doing, I mean we've experienced their surgical experiments, their gaming infiltration, their evil, their cultish mind control...

...Drew cuts back in, "CONTROL – that's what they're doing. World domination is their ultimate aim, and by taking their operational lair underground, away from the world above, they're more likely to achieve their goal," he says.

There's a few minute silence as we all digest Drew's words, before Kelly asks, "Who are they, The Surgeon's dead, isn't she?"

Drew swigs more coffee, "Correct. But her 'ideologies' aren't. There are people in positions of power, many whom we've personally encountered on our journey, who wish to own the world and all its people, to be able to do and act as they wish." He stands up, "Right now, there are kids all over the world playing computer games, unaware that the murder, mayhem and disease they're creating is happening in real time, controlled by them down there," he says, pointing downwards. He points up, "As you know, in this world, children are being brainwashed by imps to be lifelong supporters, followers and soldiers of their new world order." He imparts this knowledge, with a strong and determined voice.

Kade stands up, takes off his t-shirt and stands in front of us all. After the collective wince from them all at the sight of the scarring words, he says, "The kids scratched this on me, what do you think the last word is?" He asks.

Troy reads the final lines aloud – "But back to their beginning they were led. And once there, The Surgeon's people said, if they meet again, The Lady will be_ _ _ _."

Kelly, Troy and Drew say in unison – "Dead."

While we all look at each other with whirring minds, I notice my brother Tony is rooting through a medicine cabinet affixed to the wall.

I watch as he removes a small band-aid and returns to us.

Standing in front of us he asks, "May I make a correction to the children's narrative scribed on Kade's body," his question directed at me.

Kade glances at me and nods a 'yes.'

Looking Tony in the eye, I say, "Go ahead Tony, make your correction."

He carefully peels off the backing on the band-aid, "I would like to remove the deceased from this narrative. Once I have completed this task, Troy should re-read it. Then I would like you all to consider another word that rhymes with 'led' but is more appropriate to my amended narrative," he says.

Tony bends and carefully places the band-aid over the word 'Surgeon's' and returns to his terminal.

Troy re-reads it, But back to their beginning they were led.

And once there, The people said, if they meet again, The Lady will be_ _ _ _.

Drew immediately gets it, he stands and says out loud, "But back to their beginning they were led. And once there, the people said, if they meet again, The Lady will be READ."

He becomes animated, "We are the people, we take control and make sure this story is exposed, told and widely read – and we make The Lady a true tale of triumph," he says, almost bursting with enthusiasm.

......

We are all safely geared up (except Tony, who remains monitoring and taking care of baby Belinda).

With our fly-packs on, and fully armed, we're ready to fly around the space on our first reconnaissance mission.

Drew with his insider knowledge of the underground world, takes a leadership stance, a role he adopts with relish.

"Shouldn't we have a strategy in place, before we venture skywards?" Asks Troy, ever cautious.

Drew is officious, "Our strategy is simple: we find away to get under – then we kill the leaders." He pauses, then says bluntly, "Or vice-versa!" He says, ominously.

......

As we power up our fly-packs, Drew informs us, "They'll put up multiple barriers to prevent us from getting under, but we deal with those bridges when we get to them."

Kade's eager and is the first to hover off the ground. He stops and hovers less than a metre off the ground and points outward, "It looks like we have our first barrier."

We look in his direction.

It's the kids, all armored up, imps strapped to their fronts, fly-packs on their backs. They hover upwards in a straight line – then in a perfectly precise formation, they proceed towards us.

Drew hovers up and forward, "Let's do this, it's us or them!" He commands.

Kade stalls – "WAIT – we can't kill children – they're being used, but ultimately they're innocents – we can't kill innocents, can we...?
