02| The Invitation (Part 1)

Kelly LeVonne

Westgate is a relatively small country. At least when compared to a world empire like United States, although it is only slightly smaller than England.

What it doesn't have in size, however, it makes up for in other aspects.

Aspects such as beauty. It's in a natural setting, it's areas having not fully been overtaken by high rise buildings everywhere. I live in Edenspree, Westgate's capital, with my family.

It is a monarchy.

The King, Theodore Morris II, is quite young for a king at the age of 39 but he has really made a huge impact in this relatively small country in his regime. He has two sons: Richard and Ronald both 10 and 7 years of age respectively. I happen to have met both on a few occasions. The King's wife, Queen Analiss, passed away five years ago and the king had never remarried since. I am not surprised. From her charity works and her other royal performances, she was truly a loveable and remarkable woman.

I haven't met the King before though. Nevertheless, I have seen numerous images of him on the Internet and in tabloids and from what I have seen he is absolutely handsome. He has, in the past, held balls and banquets to which my parents are usually invited as they are a part of the elite in the country, with my father being Duke of Edenspree, but I have never attended one myself.

So, it is quite a shock to see, upon my arrival to Westgate, an invitation to the King's ball to celebrate Westgate's 100th year with my name written neatly on it and not my parents.

A surprise indeed.

I consider for brief moment not going. Seeing as I just arrived, I feel like just resting all week and adjusting to the time difference and all, but my mother, who had been glued to my side since I arrived home quickly crushed that idea.

She had pointed out that it was an honor to get an invite to a ball from the king. Although, I'm pretty sure the king didn't write the damn invite or guest list himself so I hardly think he would notice if I wasn't in attendance, I don't tell my mother this, rather I nod and agree to go.

When I had returned home, my father had been away on a business trip which he still hasn't returned from. He had left me a graduation gift which was a diamond encrusted choker with the diamonds in a dripping form. It was beautiful I have to admit, but I'm at that point in my life where none of my father's expensive gifts surprise or impress me anymore.

There was no card attached to it, nothing that would have made the gesture even the least bit special. That was his signature behavior. Make up for his absence with expensive gifts. I often wondered when he would realize that I cherished his time more than any gift he could ever present me with.

My mother, on the other hand, had my time. And right now, as she drags me from store to store to shop for the ball, I really wish she was off busy with something else.

It's been hours and my feet are already aching and when added to the fact that I am terribly hungry, it isn't exactly putting me in the best mood and I am just about ready to snap at the undeserving shop attendant who had been all too eager to please since the moment we walked in.

One of the disadvantages of being the daughter of a highly fashion oriented woman is that you are turned into a human mannequin. I groan as my mother instructs the attendant to bring out yet another dress for me to try on.

I didn't understand why. The one I currently had on was beautiful and looked great on me. When I pointed this out to my mother she simply replied, "Good is not enough. You, my dear have to be jaw-dropping, Awe inspiring. They should pause and take a minute to appreciate the beauty of the daughter of Maria LeVonne."

After that I didn't even bother replying. She was already in too deep.

Finally, she found the dress that she thought fit into all categories essential and I had to admit, it was gorgeous. The dress was a low back strapless royal blue lace dress with tiny sapphires decorating the top part of it and the bottom being plain and long with a slit by the side. It had tiny spaghetti straps which were to be worn on my lower shoulder and a slit that was just a little high.

I loved it.

After that phase, I was all too happy to go home and take a hot bath while my mother was pleased with herself.

Since the ball is three days away, I spend my leisure time just exploring my beautiful country and meeting up with a few friends.

Damn, I missed home.
