Chapter 1: {The Quest}

"Izuku! Izuku! Wake up!" Izuku Midoriya awoke to his mother shaking him gently. He sat up on his straw mattress, rubbing his eyes.

"What is it, Mum?"

"Time for breakfast!" Inko replied, clasping her hands together.

She left in a hurry, and soon the smell of bacon rose from the other room.

Izuku changed into his everyday outfit, a plain shirt and pants made out of cotton. He donned his gloves, ran a hand through his hair, and went out.

Life in their small village was hard but rewarding. Later, Izuku would have to go out and watch sheep for the wealthy merchants in town with his friend Ochaco.

Inko sat down across from him at their small wooden table, watching her son devour his breakfast.

She took a deep breath.

"Izuku, honey, today you've been summoned to the castle." Inko blurted out.

The green-haired boy did a double take, spitting out his food.

"T-the castle? W-why?"

"I don't know. I got a very official-looking summons from the postman yesterday-it had the royal stamp and everything. You're to be there in an hour."

Izuku thought about it. "Well, I haven't done anything wrong..."

"It'd be best for you to go now, hon. I'll see you soon... I hope." Inko sniffed.

"Hey, mom, I'll be okay. Don't worry, please." He grabbed his satchel and vest, then ran out the door.

He walked down the path, greeting villagers. Suddenly, his friend Ochaco ran up.

"Heya there Deku! Where ya' going?"

"Oh, um... I've been summoned to the castle." He scratched the back of his head sheepishly.

She gasped. "Why? Are you in trouble? Is it because of that prank we played on Iida? It was just a joke!"

"N-no, nothing like that. Er... I actually don't know why." He shrugged.

"Oh, well, good luck!" She gave him a quick hug, then dashed off.

Izuku continued on his way, until he reached the big stone pathway that led to the castle.

He took a deep breath, then started up the hill, the shadow of the huge building looming over him.

When he at last reached the enormous wooden door, he mustered up his courage and knocked-once, twice, three times.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Each connection with the wood made a deep, echoing sound.

The boy waited for a few minutes, deliberating whether or not he should  knock again.

As soon as he raised his fist, however, the door creaked open.

He looked through the crack, searching for the person who had opened it, but found no one.

Izuku cautiously stepped inside.

The floor was carpeted with rich, plush fabrics in royal colors.

It appeared to be a hall, and there was a door at the other end. The walls were lined with suits of armor, with two flanking the doorway at the far end, swords crossed over it.

Midoriya began walking down the hall, not noticing the door closing slowly behind him.

When he finally reached the door, he reached out a hand to the knob, only to find that it would not turn.

"Aw, dang it. How am I supposed to get in?" He sighed.

He turned to leave.

Suddenly, the knob turned in his hand and opened.

"Huh?" He shrugged, then went to edge under the swords. His head went through the gap, and then-

Shing!

Both swords embedded themselves in the carpet inches away from his neck.

"Aieeeeee!" Deku screamed in surprise.

"State your business." A voice came from the seemingly empty suit of armor.

"You...talk? A t-talking suit of armor?" Izuku wondered disbelievingly.

This has to be a dream. Wake up, wake up!

He squinted his eyes closed.

Nope, not a dream.

He screamed again.

"Hey, kid, get over it."

" State your business." The second threatened, edging the sword closer.

Two talking suits of armor... Oh, gosh! Why couldn't I have just stayed home?!

"O-okay! My name is Izuku M-Midoriya, I was called to the castle by a summons!" He blurted.

There was a moment's pause, then the armor retracted the swords.

"You may go."

The boy gasped with relief, exhaling. He stood, dusting himself off, then pushed the door open, still shaking slightly.

He stepped into a lush, carpeted throne room.

Izuku looked around with wonder at the most beautiful chamber he had ever seen in his life.

He was so absorbed that it wasn't till a few minutes later he noticed a chuckle coming from the throne.

He paled.

"Y-Your Majesty!" Midoriya knelt quickly, blushing at his ignorance.

"Oh, no need for that." The man on the dais stood.

"Please, call me All Might."

The green-haired boy stood up hesitantly.

"I-I'm such a big fan of yours! You saved the country from dragons, you beat armies single-handed, you-" He continued to babble.

All Might smiled winningly. He was a big man, bulk with muscle, but he also radiated victory and patriotism.

"Leave us!" He commanded, gesturing towards the attendants at either side of the throne. Midoriya blinked, he hadn't noticed them before.

Then suddenly, they both vanished.

Izuku started.

"Did they-did you-am I dreaming?" He blurted.

"Talking suits of armor, vanishing people, doors that open by themselves, what is going on?! Somebody pinch me!" The frantic boy muttered.

"I see you've never experienced magic." All Might spread his arms magnanimously.

"M-magic?"

"Magic, my boy. Magic is all around us, ripe for the using if only one knows how to harness it."

"But"-He leaned forward, walking towards the boy-"aren't you wondering why you are here?"

Izuku blushed, then nodded. He had forgotten in the excitement.

"Well, my boy, I shall tell-"

He started coughing, spitting up blood.

"Sir? A-All Might? Are you okay?" Midoriya rushed forward.

There was a poof of smoke, and there in the place of All Might was a skinny man with blonde hair sticking up in various places on his head.

"Ahhh!" Izuku screamed.

The man coughed, looking embarrassed. "Well, my boy, it's more serious than I thought."

"A-All Might? It's you! W-what happened?!"

"Sit." He patted the ground, then sat so they were facing each other.

The teen obliged.

"This is my true form. The reason why I called you here today is for a quest. I have been watching you for a while, young Midoriya. You have shown bravery, and compassion. A week ago you saved that young girl Ochaco from a stampede, and many others were put out of harm's way when you alerted them of the avalanche."

"B-but that doesn't mean I'm cut out for a quest! I just did what anyone would'be done."

All Might's eyes bored into the younger's.

"You are brave, my boy. I have weakened. My power is fading. And... I need a successor. You have shown me that you are worthy of power."

Izuku gasped. "M-me?!"

"Yes. This place is in great danger. Terrible creatures are coming. However, I have read of an artifact that can help us. It is called..."

He leaned forward, with a reverent tone.

"The Sword of Shining Light."

"T-The sword? I thought it was a legend!"

All Might smiled grimly. "No. It is real, my boy. And we need it to protect this place.l

"You must retrieve it from the northern jungle, where it has been guarded for centuries. Travel through the forest, over the mountains, and over the Badlands."

"T-The Badlands?"

"Yes, my boy. We are all counting on you."

"B-but All Might... I'm just a normal boy. This is so sudden!  I have no powers, no training-"

"No matter." All Might placed a hand on the boy's forehead.

The boy suddenly felt a surge of power through his body. He touched his forehead, and a glimmering green jewel was stuck there.

He flexed his fists with wonder. He felt strong, energized, and ready.

"There. Now you have my powers. You will be able to fight. I believe in you, young Midoriya. You have a good soul."

Izuku stood. "I won't fail you, All Might!" He felt confident and more powerful than anything.

All Might smiled.

"That's my boy. Now go! Remember my instructions."

Izuku ran out the door.

The fate of all of us rests on his shoulders...
