Chapter 4
The next day after school, Giulia went back to the police station, and headed straight to her Aunt's office.
There, Melody was in a rushed, whispered conversation with a short, troubled looking man. They stopped abruptly as Giulia entered.
"Tell me if you find anything, Inspector Cair," he said quietly and left without another word, determinately not looking back at Melody or her niece.
Melody turned away from Giulia, looking heavily conserned.
"What's wrong?" said Giulia, moving towards her aunt, which had just sat down behing her long wooden, desk and opened the same yellow file as the day before,
"Nothing's wrong," Melody answered, smiling. Even though the smile had been forced, it still lit up her pretty face, something that Giulia had inherited, "It's just that, my parter just left, he was talking to the sergeant earlier, and he told me that Black Hill called, confirming Miller Ashwin's death. They said he died of tuberculosis after only eight months in prison. They assured us his body was taken out of his cell, and desposed of long ago."
Giulia stopped next to her Aunt,
I knew it! she thought silently,
"So, someone is framing him?" she said already certain of the awnser.
"Yes," said her Aunt still looking concerned, "Listen, Giulia, I've talked to you parents and we all agreed, that after the death of the crime scene investigator and a civilian under our very eyes yesterday, it is not safe enough for you to be roaming around the station after school."
Giulia gaped at her aunt, not believing her ears, then said blankly, "What? But Aunt Melody-"
"it's not safe!" Her aunt cut across her, and added in a more powerful tone, "With an assasin running free you cannot be in and out of the police station, where he just murdered two people in the blink of an eye!"
Giulia stared at her aunt, crestfallen.
"We still do not know why he did so, and until we find out and catch him, you must stay away for your own safety." Melody said in a very final tone.
Giulia took this as her cue to leave, and with one final goodbye she left, down hearted, not knowing when she would be back to the place where she most longed to be.
Giulia slowly made her way home, looking at her toes, walking, defeated, along the rock pavements of Rose Ville.
She reached the edge of the street and decided to turn right, instead of the usual way, she took a short cut, wishing to get home as soon as possible.
This street was dimly lit, unlike the main roads, which were full of lamposts glinting down at the passing people.
Giulia looked at the beautiful twilight, it was begining to get darker as the end of the afternoon approached. The gloomy street felt eerie intimidating; Giulia had never taken this road by night before. Just as she decided to turn back to the main road, something make her stop. The road, going off the edgy street which she was on, was illuminated by a single lampost. Beneath it, lay a motionless body, with a much bigger one hovering above it. The man dropped a piece of paper on the dead body at his feet, and made to turn away, still holding the bloody knife that had claimed the life of the corpse, barely visible under the sinister light of the single lampost.
The man turned into the next street, heading into a labyrinth of uncanny paths. As he left, Giulia only just caught the strange, almost frightened expression on his face.
Without a second thought, Giulia walked straight up to the inanimate man on the ground. Unsurprisingly, on it lay the same paper bearing Miller Ashwin's sillhouette.
Giulia turned her face away from the pale profile and dead eyes of the man before her. She started walking away fast, but not towards home. She turned into the same street as the man before, expecting to look for him for a while. Instead, she started hearing hushed voices, in the road parallel to hers. She edged her way down the street, heading closer to the voices.
"You have done what I have asked you?" asked a very loud, lofty voice.
"I have," replied the second voice of a young man. As Giulia looked into the street, making sure that she wasn't being noticed, she saw that this weaker voice, belonged to the man that had assasinated minutes before.
"Well, then you are free to go, Alain." said the first strong voice, Giulia could not interpret whether this voice was a woman's or a man's.
Without another word, the man named Alain, turned away and walked rapidly down the street, away from Giulia, away from the mysterious voice.
The other person walked slowly down the road towards Giulia. Instead of walking into her, it turned into the road just before, and Giulia followed. When the sun had almost set and Giulia was about to turn back, the peculiar person stopped and so did Giulia walking slowly far behind them. The person entered what seemed like a wide, abandoned warehouse, and of course, Giulia quietly entered aswell.
The warehouse consisted of a single vast, gloomy room and as the person walked to the center of it, Giulia remained near the exit, only just peaking in.
The person ceased walking and slumped down into the single chair in the room. Giulia gasped as the person started to slowly peel away, or so it seemed to Giulia, and reveal the delicate form of a woman. She dropped the body suit to the ground, next to her and sighed, exausted. Before considering her situation, Giulia stormed inside the spectral room, straight up to the woman sitting on the chair.
"Who are you?" demanded Giulia, in a vigorous voice.
The lady turned towards Giulia, momentarily surprised.
"Ah! How delightful, some company..." she said in a false sweet voice. "I haven't had any of that since my days in Zagreb..."
Something clicked in Giulia's brain, and with a hand in her coat pocket she pressed the recording button on her phone, unnoticed, secreately recording every word, and automatically sending it to Melody Cair.
"Veronica?" Giulia asked, still with a determined voice.
"I haven't gone by that name in ages!" Veronica replied softly as her maniacal laugh rang quietly through the room.
"Why did you blackmail that man to murder innocent people?" asked Giulia, loudly, trying to coax a confession out of the woman called Veronica.
"I had to," she replied, her voice breaking just slightly, "They knew too much... I couldn't risk it. And I knew Alain would do as I say. He is... very weak." she suddenly sounded much stronger, as though the mere thought of other's weaknesses empowered her.
"What did they know about you?" Giulia continued, still with a very strong tone.
Veronica considered her for a moment. Then she seemed to have decided that it was no harm telling, a powerless young girl. Little did she know, that for the first time in her life, she would be the prey.
"They knew about about my past..." she said very slowly, "they knew that it was I that killed Flynn. They knew the rage I felt towards him, they knew how he had an affair with another woman only days before our wedding!"as she said this a mixture of pain and hate creeped upon her face. They knew how I had framed my poor husband for a crime that I had commited." She looked away from Giulia, towards the other direction as she said loathingly, "I thought I could trust them. But I learned not to trust anyone."
Giulia listened closely, not moving a single bone, but still, like always, fearless.
Veronica continued talking, "Not long ago I heard they had reopened the case conserning my late husband. You never know... one of them could have told the truth and I would have ended up right where my husband was... I couldn'd risk it" she repeated. "So I came back, and framed my husband again. I knew how everyone knew about his unique sillhouette. So I disposed of them. It was just the three of them... Brian, Brenden and Olivia..." She turned to look at Giulia straight in the eyes, with a murderous look on her face and said quietly, "Well, now they are dead... and so will you be when I am finished!"
She pulled out a gun from her side and made to pull the trigger and release the bullet when a blasting sound made them both jump. The door had just been broken down and Veronica was in handcuffs before she had time to notice what was happening. Melody Cair and her fellow police officers had just burst in, and as Veronica Ashwin was dragged away to Black Hill, she jumped up and grabbed Giulia pulling her down. Before Melody recovered Giulia, Veronica had whispered menancingly into Giulias ear; "I'll be back..."
