Chapter 7. What Could Have Been (Lets See How Far We've Come)

Do you know that feeling?

That feeling of when your world just... stops, and you don't really know what to do.

Be it from a giant tragedy or something really good.

That's what Percy felt, but he didn't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing. Either way it was something, and something is always worth more then nothing.

He skipped school. He didn't know what to do. He didn't think he could go through it. The first day nothing happened. No one noticed, or, as far as he thought. Course, who'd care enough to think about him?

Another day of not going to school passed. The world kept turning, the sun rose and set and the stars still came out. His foster parents didn't notice he never left. Sure they were better then most foster parents he had in the past, but they still weren't the best. They were busy, so they didn't notice a lot of things.

Three days passed and Percy was left staring at his walls. His blank, plain walls. He refused to get comfortable in any home. He always ended up running away or getting kicked out. In one way or another he always left, so what was the point of spreading out? He kept very few personal items. He actually envied the kids who had rooms filled with enough clutter for it to be considered a safety hazard. They had the family that loved them, they had the luxury of getting what they wanted, or at least something close to something they wanted. They had the luxury of being able to fill their rooms with a bunch of stuff about them and their families and their likes and their dislikes.

Percy had a desk. A bed. A nightstand. No posters. A laptop, a phone, some headphones, and just a few other items of junk.

He had some clothes in the closet, and hidden inside his nightstand was a special knife, a special photo, a special necklace, two special rings, and a special whiteboard with something special on it written in black ink.

The necklace was something from his parents. To the random bystander it was just a shark tooth on a leather necklace. To Percy it was a gift his parents had gotten him before he was even born.

They had gotten it on their honeymoon, after they found out his mom was pregnant with him. They gave it to him on his sixth birthday. Percy had absolutely loved it. He wore it everywhere they went, and he never took it off.

Out of the special rings Percy could never decide which he valued more, he loved both of them. One was his mother's engagement ring, which he had found at the grand old age of five. His mom had let him keep it. She figured it'd be safer with him then with her.

The other ring had been Percy's father's wedding ring. He had taken it off for the day because he was going to fix the sink and he didn't want any of that disgusting sink stuff to get on the symbol of his love to Percy's mom.

Then the whiteboard...

Percy didn't really know why he kept it propped up on his desk by his computer. He just... couldn't erase what was on it.

What was on it?

Maybe you could guess.

Or maybe you couldn't.

Written in bold, beautiful, graceful letters were the words 'Bye, Percy.'

Two simple words.

Percy spent a good hour or so staring at the words, his music blasting in his ears. He didn't want to get up and erase it. He didn't know why. He liked the handwriting.

He had tried before. Just simply wipe it away and it'd be gone.

But he felt like you can't erase something like that with much ease.

If anyone heard him they'd think he was ridiculous, stupid. For crying out loud it had been written by a boy who barely cared.

Percy glanced at the drawer in the bedside table. He bit his lip and slowly pulled out the drawer.

His eyes landed on the knife, but he wasn't in there for that.

His fingers wrapped around two circular items, which he then proceeded to pull out, leaving the drawer open.

He stared at the two rings and bit his lip, slowly turning them before holding them against his chest.

What would it be like... if nothing bad had happened? If it was all... fine.

Probably would have been the best life... ever.

Percy's eyes drooped and he fell asleep just like that. Lying on his bed, clutching two very special rings to his chest, and listening to music.

---

"MOM MAKE ANNABETH GIVE ME BACK MY BOOK! I NEED THAT!" a whine escaped Percy's lips as he sat down at the table.

His mom, Sally, just turned to them and laughed, serving her two crazy kids special blueberry pancakes.

"I don't know what to say. I have two kids enthusiastic about book reading," Sally grinned, "and reading's pretty hard for you two."

"Oh it's a fascinating book." Annabeth hummed, picking up her fork. "It's about dragons and sirens and a whole bunch of Greek Mythology stuff! Oh and dad's in it!"

"Well he's not actually in it..." Percy murmured, eating his pancakes.

"Shut up seaweed brain I'm talking." Annabeth said.

"You were done talking!"

"Nuh uh!"

"Yeah huh!"

"MOM!" the two looked at their mom.

"How about you just tell me about dad being in this book of yours." Sally laughed, sitting down at the table next to them.

"Well so you know how dad's first name is Poseidon?" Annabeth asked.

"Mhm." Sally nodded.

"Well-"

"Well!" Percy butted in, "The book includes the Greek god Poseidon."

"So you've discovered my secret!" Poseidon stepped into the doorway, doing a goofy little twirl as he tightened his tie.

"I'm actually the sea god Poseidon and you two are demigods who have special powers!"

"I like that dad, can we have that dad?" Annabeth grinned.

"Well I think your father is pretty god like in his own way." Sally hummed.

"Thank you madam." Poseidon winked and leaned down to kiss her cheek.

"Aye! Whoa whoa whoa hey!" Percy exclaimed, "None of that here, get a room!"

"Well technically we own every room in the house." Poseidon smirked.

"I'm moving out!" Percy threw his hands up in the air.

"Sweet can I get Percy's room then?" Annabeth asked excitedly.

"No one's moving out." Sally laughed. "Besides Percy, kissing is nothing you probably haven't seen before with that boyfriend of yours."

"I, do not, have, a boyfriend!" Percy huffed, accidentally spewing out little crumbs of blueberry pancake from his mouth. He blinked, swallowing the food.

"Come on he's always over!" Annabeth exclaimed. "Have you even seen you two? Gosh."

"What about you and the girlfriend of yours?" Percy mocked. "It's always 'Piper this. Piper that. Piper is blah blah blah blah."

"Hey I hang out with Piper because the alternative just isn't all that great." Annabeth teased, sticking her tongue out at him.

The two siblings were about to go on bickering, but the doorbell interrupted them.

"I got it." Poseidon hummed, "Sally watch these kids closely, they might rip each other apart."

"They attempt it every other night, I'll be fine." Sally laughed.

The doorbell rang again.

Poseidon picked up a blueberry pancake, placed it on his head, and then answered the door.

"Hello Mr.'-" a female voice stopped short.

"Um... new style Mr. Jackson?" a boy's voice asked sheepishly.

"Yes it's the latest in all hat wear. Delicious and efficient. Wards off unwanted people too."

"Well it didn't ward us off." the girl hummed.

"Because you two are wanted." Poseidon grinned, "Come in come in!"

A girl and a boy walked inside, both very much the opposite of each other.

The girl had a darker skin tone, native american, probably. She had beautiful brown locks of hair with some random braids and feathers here and there, which really fit her.  Her eyes... well you couldn't really tell what color her eyes were, they always seemed to be different, just like her. She was spunky, but she was a daredevil. Her creativity was as wild as her eyes, and she always gave off this crazy fun vibe.

The boy on the other hand was as white as a ghost, or as Percy called him, 'An angry piece of paper.' Little racist, but they had both cracked up at the joke. The boy had dark colored eyes and black hair to match, but he was like a little ray of... well they didn't know what. He had this unique vibe to him that everyone loved. He had this dark aura to him, but at the same time it was sort of happy.

"ANNABETH, PERCY, YOUR DATES ARE HERE!" Poseidon called.

"Send em into the kitchen!" Percy laughed and the three walked in.

"Oh look it's my girlfriend and my sister's boyfriend." Percy hummed. "Wait a minute, swwap em."

Nico laughed, sitting down next to him, "So I'm your boyfriend now?"

"Got a problem with that?" Percy asked, looking fake offended.

"Nope, nope. None at all. But being your boyfriend and all... what's yours is mine." Nico swiped Percy's plate out from under him and devoured the rest of his pancake, giving him a thumbs up.

Percy gasped, "That is it, we are over!"

"Ah they had such a good run too." Piper said, pouting.

"Great now I have to deal with a broken hearted Percy." Annabeth shook her head, "You see what you left me with Nico?"

"My dearest apologies." Nico hummed.

Sally plopped plates in front of Piper and Nico, throwing a pancake onto all four of the teenager's plates.

"Thank you Mrs. Jackson. I think I'll put this to good use." Piper stated happily, picking up the pancake and placing it on her head.

"Oh my, look what you've started!" Sally exclaimed, lightly hitting Poseidon's arm.

Meanwhile Poseidon was cracking up, using his wife's shoulder as support.

The other three kids glanced at each other. They shared smirks before putting their own pancakes onto their heads.

"YES!" Poseidon cheered, clapping his hands.

The four kids stood up and practically danced around the table.

"Come on mom, join us!" Annabeth laughed.

"JOIN THE PANCAKE HEADS!" Nico exclaimed.

Mrs. Jackson let out an exasperated sigh before picking up a pancake and putting it on her head.

"That's the Sally I know and love!" Poseidon grinned, kissing her cheek.

"You know what this deserves?" Annabeth asked.

"A selfie of the Pancake Heads?" Percy hummed.

"As stupid as you are, you are correct."

They all pulled out their phones and took pictures of their crazy, dysfunctional Pancake Head Tribe.

And proceeded to post it all over social media.

"Well this was great, top notch really." Percy hummed. "But now it's video game time."

"Just don't break the controller again, doofus." Annabeth said.

"Annie please, you were the one who broke it."

"Nuh uh!"

"Yeah huh!"

"Why you gotta blame me it was totally you!"

"No-"

"Okay let us settle this." Poseidon cleared his throat.

"Yeah but-"

"The Pancake Lord is speaking!" he exclaimed. "And Pancake Lord rules... Annabeth and Percy have both broken two controllers!"

"Dangit." Annabeth muttered.

"Alright alright go, get." Poseidon laughed.

Nico saluted them before he and Percy ran upstairs while Annabeth and Piper headed to the living room.

Sally and Poseidon looked at each other.

"We're not like other families." Sally smiled.

"Normal's boring." Poseidon hummed, kissing her.

"ALRIGHT!" Percy burst into his room, immediately tripping and falling on his face.

Nico burst into laughter, falling into the wall behind him.

"It's fine it's fine! I landed on the pile of clothes." Percy lifted his head and blew hair out of his face.

"You should clean your room." Nico hummed, leaping over his body and sitting on his bed.

"Like you can talk." Percy snorted, standing up and shutting the door.

"Whaatever. Did we come to talk or did we come to destroy each other?"

"The latter." Percy turned on his ps4 and his TV, throwing Nico a controller.

"You know... we're really lucky." Nico said as Percy rummaged through his games. "I just found out about this foster kid from my dad. Poor guy goes from home to home, but can never find the right one. I feel really bad for him. Dad was talking about maybe taking him in."

Percy glanced at him, "You know that'd be kinda cool. I mean you're practically surrounded by girls."

"I hang out with you a lot, you calling yourself a girl?" Nico asked.

"The world couldn't handle me as a girl." Percy smirked, putting a disc in.

"True, very very true."

After playing video games for about... four hours the two boys switched to a movie.

Finding Nemo.

Then Finding Dory.

Then The Little Mermaid.

"You know I'd be the best damn Mermaid out there." Percy stated.

"Uh, merman." Nico said, snorting with laughed.

"EXCUSEMEDIDISTUTTER?"

Nico laughed, shaking his head.

"But I did mean Merman. They'd call me Perseus, the fierce. PERSEUS, King of the Ocean!"

"OrPerseustheservant." Nico whispered.

"Alright, alright, if you could be a creature what would you be?" Percy asked.

"I'd be a fallen angel." Nico hummed. "Oh my god that'd be an epic story."

"What?"

"Fallen angel and merman."

"Lovers of the sea and sky!" Percy exclaimed, jumping up on his bed. "And... I... don't have an S word for the underworld."

"Then let's just go with sea, sky, and underworld!" Nico jumped up next to him, grinning.

"Let's write that!" Percy said. "We could turn into a comic or- an anime!"

"YES ANIME!"

"YES!" the two high fived each other, accidentally knocking each other down onto the ground.

"Ow..." Percy whined. "You good over there!?"

"Just fine! Landed on a bunch of coats! You!?"

"Landed on a crap load of clothes!"

Nico laughed and stood up, sitting back down on the bed.

"So how should we start this?" Nico hummed, looking around the mess of a room before grabbing a pencil and a notebook.

"You're the writer." Percy shrugged, plopping down next to him.

"Well you're the artist. What should the characters look like?"

"Hmm... The merman should have this magnificent shiny tail that catches the light whenever he swims. He'll be the prince- or... yes, the prince. His tail should be this beautiful blue, all kinds of shades of blue. Then his fins, like the finny part will be all flowy and majestic. Then of course, he'll have muscles, black hair, and these blueish greenish eyes. And this cool scales along his body, like not everywhere, but a few scales on his arms, some on his torso, and some under his jawline."

"Got it." Nico hummed.

"Oh wait!" Percy reached over to his cluttered nightstand, picking up his sketchbook and an art pencil, doing a quick sketch while Nico came up with his character.

About an hour (or three) later Percy was done, and Nico had worked out his character and the beginning of their story.

Percy turned his sketchbook, showing Nico.

Nico grinned, clapping his hands.

"Do you really think we could make an anime?" Nico asked.

"Uhh I think we could make something like an anime...?" Percy smiled sheepishly.

"Alright well, there's our dream. Make this a story or an animated film." Nico hummed. "We'll be the best partners out there."

"Indeed we will." Percy grinned and the two high-fived. "So what's the introduction?"

"Well it's gonna start with narration-"

"Oh great, Cinema Sins will be on our tails." Percy laughed.

Nico grinned. He made a face before going, "Literally 40 seconds of logos. Aaand naration."

"Man Cinema Sins is awesome."

"I know right?" Nico hummed. "Anyway, I think it'll start like uhm...

'He always wanted to fly. He wanted to grow wings and explore the world up above. Not go all Little Mermaid style, but he wanted to soar the skies. Flap his wings, feel the wind blow his hair back. Sure he had it good down here, and he loved swimming. But everytime he'd jump into the air he'd wonder... how far could he go? How high could he jump?'"

Nico smiled sheepishly, "It's not very good so far..."

"You kidding me? It's amazing!" Percy exclaimed, kissing his cheek.

Nico paused, slowly looking at him.

"What was um... what was... that?" he asked slowly.

"...A friendly kiss on the cheek. You know like how close Friends do. T-they um, they do it on the shows Friends..." Percy stuttered nervously, smiling.

"Oh... okay... are you... sure that's all that was?"

"Yeah, yeah, totally sure."

Percy cleared his throat and the two slowly went back to their work.

About four more hours and Percy was done with the Fallen Angel, after bugging Nico consistently to look at his notes.

He turned the picture around, showing Nico.

"Wow. I make a hot fallen angel." Nico laughed.

"Eh I tried." Percy shrugged, smiling.

"Hey do you find it weird your mom didn't call us down for lunch?" Nico asked.

Percy stared at him.

"What?" Nico blinked.

"She did... call us down for lunch. I went down and told her what was happening so she gave me some food to bring up."

Nico glanced at the empty plate by his side.

"OH!"

"Yeah." Percy laughed.

"BOYS! DINNER!" Sally called.

"Did you at least hear that?" Percy looked at Nico.

Nico rolled his eyes, "Yeah yeah yeah..."

---

"Oh that was a good dinner!" Percy collapsed on his bed before sitting up.

"Hey mind if I sleepover?" Nico asked.

"Sure, gives us more time to collab on this awesome book... thing." Percy hummed as Nico sat down next to him.

Nico bit his lip and nodded.

Percy frowned, turning to him, "Anything wrong?" he poked his cheek.

"Just thinkin'.'"

"Bout what?"

"The book you doofus." Nico smiled.

"Oh, oh. Oh yes. Yes yes I understand. Wait- we never decided on names for them!"

"Well for now I just used our names, and we can just go back and change all the names when we settle on actual names for them." Nico hummed.

"How we gonna do that?"

"Control f my friend."

"Oh... see this is why your the writer." Percy said with a grin.

"Well also because I can't draw for sh.it." Nico laughed.

"This is also very true." Percy smirked.

"Any monkey can poop out a story."

Percy snickered, "That's the best phrasing I've ever heard."

"WELL ANY MONKEY CAN-"

"NO!" Percy laughed, tackling him and covering his mouth. "How dare you talk about shi.t like that!"

Nico snickered a few times before a trail of laughter left his lips, his body shaking as he laughed.

A few minutes passe and the two teenagers finally calmed down.

"We're so childish." Percy laughed, removing his hand, smiling as he looked down at Nico.

"What's wrong with being childish?" Nico smiled. "Childhood is being creative... happy... and taking risks."

"If you could take a risk right now... what would you take?" Percy asked.

"You don't wanna know." Nico murmured.

"I do."

"You'll hate me."

"I'll always love ya."

Nico swallowed, staring at him.

Percy looked back at him, tilting his head.

Nico slowly leaned up, their lips just centimeters away.

"PERCY!" Piper burst into the room and Percy yelped, rolling off of Nico, looking at her.

"Do you have any duct tape?" Piper asked.

"Look under the pile of clothes." Percy said.

"Which... pile?"

Percy pointed.

Piper quickly dug though the clothes and pulled out some blue duct tape.

"Thank ya very kindly sir!" she hummed, leaving and shutting the door behind her.

Percy and Nico looked at each other, smiles appearing on both of their lips.

"So um... where were we?" Percy asked softly, slowly moving back over to Nico.

"Talking about risks." Nico murmurs, looking up at him.

"I like the risk you were about to take." Percy smiled, leaning down and kissing him.

--

"Welp we've made it Perce! Ten years after that fortunate day in your room and look where we are." Nico smiled, wrapping an arm around Percy as the two stared up at a billboard.

"I can't believe it." Percy whispered. "A simple... silly idea... turned into a movie."

"And soon a TV show." Nico hummed. "Look at how far we've come..."

Percy slowly turned to him, a grin on his face.

"No, no no that is not an excuse for you to start-"

https://youtu.be/6R07r5kH9N0

"WELL I, BELIEVE, THE WORLD, IS BURNIN' TO THE GROUND. OH WELL, I GUESS, WE'RE GONNA FIND OUT! LET'S SEE HOW FAR WE'VE COME! LET'S SEE HOW FAR WE'VE CO-OME."

Nico rolled his eyes before joining in with his ridiculous fiance.

"I, BELIEVE, IT ALL, IS COMIN' TO AN END. OH WELL, I GUESS, WE'RE GONNA PRETEND. LET'S SEE HOW FAR WE'VE COME! LET'S SEE HOW FAR WE'VE CO-OME."

Ignoring the incredibly weird looks they were getting from other people the two started singing together, dancing around each other.

"I think it turned ten o' clock but I don't really know, and I can't remember caring for an hour or so. Tired of crying and I couldn't stop myself. I started runnin' but there's nowhere to run to!"

The two sat down on the sidewalk, grinning.

"I sat down on the street! Took a look at myself, said 'where you goin man you know the world is headed for hell.' Say all goodbyes if you've got someone you can SAAAY GOODBYE TOOO!" the two pretended to clink drinks and tip invisible hats before standing up.

"WELL I, BELIEVE, THE WORLD, IS BURNING TO THE GROUND. OH WELL, I GUESS, WE'RE GONNA FIND OUT! LET'S SEE HOW FAR WE'VE COME! LET'S SEE HOW FAR WE'VE CO-OME. I, BELIEVE, IT ALL, IS COMIN' TO AN END. OH WELL, I GUESS, WE'RE GONNA PRETEN-"

"Guys!" Annabeth laughed, running over. "Stop singing for cryin' out loud!"

"LET'S SEE HOW FAR WE'VE COME-" Piper covered Nico and Percy's mouths.

"You guys are 26 for crying out loud!"

"Hey." Percy and Nico pried her hand off their mouths.

"Growing old is mandatory." Percy hummed.

"But growing up is optional." Nico grinned.

"Of freaking course." Annabeth laughed.

"Walt Disney right?" a voice said from behind them.

The four all turned, wide smiles forming on their faces.

"Mama! Papa!" Nico ran towards his parents, hugging them.

Poseidon and Sally laughed.

"YAY I HAVE A FAMOUS OLDER BROTHER NOW!" a little voice squeaked. It was none other then Tyson Jackson.

"Ah you still loved me even when I wasn't famous, right?" Percy laughed and hugged the little guy.

"Yeaaah, but I love you even more now!"

The adults all laughed and Percy pulled away, smiling.

"WHO'S READY FOR A PREMIERE!" Leo ran up to the group, whooing.

Calypso shook her head, "He's had a lot of caffeine today, forgive him."

"Who let that happen?" Hazel asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Guess who." Reyna rolled her eyes as her and Jason came up to the group.

"MEEEEEE!" Jason shouted, high fiving Leo.

"YEAH!" Leo screamed. "I AM FLAME BOY! I AM INVINCIBLE! I AM-"

"Incredibly loud!" Frank exclaimed. "And you all need to act your ages."

"What's the fun in that?" Jason asked.

"Dad I want a new brother." Thalia whined as her, her dad, her mom, and her fiance walked over.

"Sorry, don't think we can trade him." Zeus shrugged.

"Ugh, unfair." Thalia huffed.

"Hey man." Luke shook Percy's hand and hugged him, grinning. "Your a big star now. Guess I can't tease you anymore."

"Ah you can tease me, just... please, not on national TV." Percy laughed. "Where's everyone else?"

"DID YOU MISS US!?" Someone screeched from the other side of the street.

"Found em!" Annabeth laughed as a bunch of people ran towards them, literally stopping traffic.

Everyone hugged each other, saying hi and catching up with everyone.

Percy smiled, wrapping an arm around Nico and kissing him. He intertwined their hands, looking at Nico's shining ring before looking back at him with a smile.

Nico smiled back at him. "Look how far we've come." Nico whispered. "Kings of highschool to Kings of Film. What's next?"

"Kings of Parenthood... What do you say?" Percy asked softly. "I'm takin' a risk here."

"I think it's a great idea."

Everyone wrapped their arms around each other and heading to the premiere of the soon to be biggest hit of the decade.

Life was perfect, life was... fine.

Soon Nico and Percy were making new series, new movies, new animations. They had their own kids to take care of, and their home had the same exciting spirit as Sally and Poseidon Jackson's home did.

They were great film makers, great writers, great husbands, and great fathers.

--

Percy jerked awake, taking in deep breaths.

He sat up quickly, looking around his room. He frowned, looking at the floor. Clutter free. No random clothes... no sketchbook... no... things to trip on. Just... plain.

Percy gulped, looking down at his left hand. Nothing.

He looked into his hands, staring down at his parent's rings.

Percy sighed, setting the rings back into the drawer, gently closing it.

He paused his music and took off his headphones. His eyes scanned his room and a frown formed on his face.

Reality.

It sucked.

He paused, biting his lip. Slowly he put his headphones back on and scrolled through iTunes before coming upon a certain song.

He quickly bought it and pressed play, laying back down as the song blasted into his ears.

'Well I, believe, it all, is comin to an end. Oh well, I guess, we're gonna find out.'

He stared up at the ceiling, a small smile appearing on his face. So he was in love with a fantasy that could never exist.

Most of life is falling in love with fantasies.

But he just had one question about the dream.

Why Nico?

--

So, as you guys could probably tell I was having a little too much fun making up the perfect fantasy life for these two...
