Chapter Ten

                Leah's POV
I sat, numb, beside Devan's bed. He had been comatose for about two weeks now....And the doctor had admitted that my boyfriend was deteriorating. In my hand, I held the two necklaces that Anne had ordered for me. I had recently signed up for my America's Got Talent audition, and had put myself down as a vocalist. I also knew how to play an acoustic guitar and a piano, so I would probably use one or both of those. I gently squeezed his hand, and stood, putting the lock necklace on.

"I miss you, Devan. And....I did it. I'm going to be on America's Got Talent, and I'm doing it for you. My audition is tomorrow.....And I wish you could be there. But this.....this is for you. I've given you something I've never given anyone before. You've got the key to my heart. And I think....I think I love you." I wished it could be like the movies, where the girl confesses her love, and the guy she loves wakes up, and admits he loves her too. But....this wasn't a movie. This was real life. And he didn't wake up. Everything stayed exactly the same. I sighed, blinking back tears, and walked out. I met Collins outside, and his cheeks were also tearstained.

"Something else happen?" I asked, and he nodded.
"I just ran into Andi....And I got a lecture about how I haven't been paying enough attention to her, and if I don't, we're going to be done. I tried to explain what happened with the accident, but she wouldn't listen. So...." I sighed, nodding sadly.
"So you let her go?" He nodded slowly, looking at me. I gently took his hand, and sighed.
"Collins, I know it probably doesn't help much, but if she's this possessive and clingy, probably none of her relationships are going to work out." He smiled sadly, and opened the driver's door for me. I climbed in, and he went to the passenger side, getting in. The next day, I got up slowly, looking in the mirror. Anne was letting me wear some of Devan's t-shirts, and I had on his favorite, a plain black t-shirt. I quickly changed into jeans, my black converse, one of my plain black shirts, and a black, grey, and blue plaid shirt over it. As I got ready to leave my room, I stopped. Then, I picked up the ring Devan had given me, as well as our necklaces. I put all three on, sliding the key necklace under my t-shirt. Then, I went downstairs, and found Collins, Anne, and their dad, Steven, at the table. Collins looked up, swallowing his cereal.

"There she is! You ready? We leave in about a half-hour." I nodded, sitting across from him. Anna placed a bowl of cheerios in front of me, and I peeked over at my guitar, which was sitting on its stand in front of the bookshelves.

"Collins?" He looked up, his spoon halfway to his mouth.
"Will I have the same judges you had?" He smiled slightly, taking the bite, then spoke.
"Probably. They were pretty cool, though." I smirked.
"Coming from the one that almost got Heidi and Mel to kiss." I said, raising an eyebrow. Anne and Steven laughed, and he raised his hands.
"Hey, that was Devan's idea!! He said I should try that trick out on them." I smiled slightly, looking down. Then, I remembered something he'd told me at one point, and decided what song I was going to do for my audition. I quickly finished, and we left. Then, I had to film my video for before I went out.

"My name is Leah Jones, and I am eighteen years old. I'm actually here today because of my boyfriend, Devan, and his brother. They're the ones that convinced me to do this. I used to be a really shy, quiet person, and I....I was bullied a whole lot, and I....I was also abused by family members. Then.....one day at school, I met someone. And he....he helped me realize that I didn't have to keep letting people run over me, that I had a voice and could be heard. Meeting Devan and Collins has completely changed me as a person, and how I look at things. And now, thanks to their persuasion....here I am. Winning this would be huge, because I could help people see that no matter what you're dealing with, there will eventually be some kind of silver lining, that no matter what, you don't have to give up." I finished, and headed out. Collins helped me pin my number on my shirt, and I heard the crowd as I stood  there, nervous.

"You've got a lot of guts, coming here this soon after your accident." Nick said, chuckling, and I smiled.
"Yeah. Well, this is for my boyfriend and his brother." Nick grinned, opening the curtain.
"Break a leg." He said, and I smirked.
"Thats what Collins did." Then, I walked out, seeing the judges and the crowd. I saw the keyboard onstage, and smiled slightly. I recognized the judges, and took a deep breath. It was the exact same judges Collins had. I walked forward, holding up the microphone.

"Hello there." Howie was the one to greet me, and I smiled again.
"Hi." I hoped desperately that none of them saw me shaking.
"Alright, so what is your name, and how old are you?" I saw Steven and Anne in the crowd, and Anne was holding a video camera.

"My name is Leah Jones, and I am eighteen years old." Heidi smiled at me, and I stood a little taller.
"Leah. So you're a vocalist slash musician, correct? Who all do you have here tonight watching you?" I smiled slightly, brushing a strand of hair behind an ear.
"I have my boyfriend Devan's brother, Collins, and his parents here. My parents aren't exactly supportive of me." Howie raised an eyebrow.
"His family? So.....is your boyfriend here as well?" I took a breath, trying not to cry.
"No. He's....Oh, boy...." My voice trailed off, and I brushed a couple tears away.
"He's actually at the hospital right now, in a coma. He, his brother and I were in a car accident, and literally moments before.....He told me that if I auditioned on here, he'd be here, supporting me. So....I'm doing this for him." Heidi smiled again, and I saw Mel nodding almost sadly. Then, after a moment, Howie spoke again.

"Well, Leah, I wish you luck. And I hope your boyfriend gets a chance to see you perform up here." I smiled, taking the microphone, and went back, standing behind the keyboard. I played the first couple notes, and then started Roar.

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, I agreed politely
    I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything.

You held me down, but I got up
    Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready, cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now.

I've got the eye of the tiger, the fire
    Dancing through the fire
    Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
   Louder, louder than a lion
  Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
   You're gonna hear me roar.

Now I'm floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes
I went from zero to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up
   Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready, cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I've got the eye of the tiger, fire
   Dancing through the fire
   Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
   Louder, louder than a lion
   Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
   You're gonna hear me roar

   Roar, roar, roar, roar, roar

I've got the eye of the tiger, fire
   Dancing through the fire
   Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
   Louder, louder than a lion
   Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar

Yeah you're gonna hear me roar.

I finished, and the crowd exploded into cheers. I could almost see Devan in the crowd, the biggest smile in the world on his face. But....He wasn't there. I moved forward, and saw the judges all smiling. Howard was the first to speak up, and I stood there, in shock and awe.

"Alright, Leah? You said you're eighteen, and you just flawlessly performed a Katy Perry song. Did your boyfriend have any influence on what song you picked?" I nodded, shaking.
"Yeah. He....He always told me that somehow, I'd make my voice heard, that I didn't have to let my parents tear me down." There was more cheering, and he continued.
"Leah, you did a beautiful job, and there's not much else I can say. So....you get a yes from me." I brushed a couple more tears away, and heard cheering. Then, it was Heidi's turn.

"Right from the start, I knew you'd have something awesome. There was just a confidence about you that just....it spoke volumes. And you have an amazing voice for a girl your age. I wish you luck, and you definitely get a yes from me." I smiled slightly, nodding, and then Mel B. started talking.
"You....you are an amazing young lady, and I loved hearing you sing. And the....the emotion you pour into your performance....I love it. You get a yes from me." I could barely breathe. Then, I looked at Howie, who had a completely straight face.

"Leah....when you walked out, I saw a typical 18 year old girl. Fresh out of high school, I'm guessing, big dreams, and love to sing. But then....you started talking, and your boyfriend came up. Devan, right?" I smiled slightly, nodding.
"Yeah. Devan Key." He just barely cracked a smile, and then continued.
"When Devan came up, I saw someone else. I saw a girl who is all of the things I said before, but you have motivation. I see someone who didn't believe in herself, and because of Devan's encouragement, you're blooming. And you....you have a beautiful voice and an amazing talent. So....I better not regret what I'm about to do." I stood there, shaking, and he stood. I couldn't breathe, and didn't realize I was whispering to myself.

"Don't pass out. Don't pass out." Then, he smacked a button, and I nearly screamed. My hand went to my mouth, and I hit my knees. I had just gotten the golden buzzer, and was going straight to the live shows.

"Thank you. Thank you so much." I somehow managed, crying. Collins came out, helping me stand and hugging me as I practically sobbed. Howie smiled, and I got a standing ovation.

"Leah, I did this because I want to see you go all the way, and I think Devan would also. So....you do that boyfriend of yours proud, alright?" I nodded, smiling.
"T...thank you so much." I said, trying not to start sobbing again. We headed offstage, and met Anne and Steven out in the lobby.

"You did it!! You're going straight through!" I nodded, and stared crying as I was buried in three people hugging me again. This was actually happening. The only thing that was missing was Devan. I just wished he would be able to hear about this.

Hello again! And I know the video isn't what's in the story, but it's another singer who got the Golden Buzzer. Thanks for reading!! Love you guys!!
