Clarissa

Pain. Immense pain.

The moment my back hit the other row of seats in the bus I was previously seated in, all I felt was numbness initially, and then the mind numbing pain.

I tried to get up and go towards the exit of the bus, but I soon found it to be impossible because of many reasons.

One being that the ache in my back was agonising.

Pieces of glass had pierced my body, making the slightest of movements stung.

And lastly, where do you walk in a bus which is totally tilted to the side?

I was awkwardly balanced on the handle of one seat, with the support of my left leg on the seat next to it.

Just ten minutes prior this situation, I was merrily humming a tune, and sitting in these same seats comfortably.

I glanced at the right to see a seat toppled over an old man, who was covered in blood, a woman in the next row didn't seem to have much injuries, but was already unconscious.

A few seats away from me, a kid barely older than 13, had his hand in a very crooked manner, hanging from his shoulder, and his chest was covered with blood.

The sight of it from such a small distance had bile rising up my throat.

I turned my head away from it, trying to muster some strength to get up and waddle towards the exit.

Who knew going to the school in a bus was such a task.

I shifted all my weight on the left leg, trying to get up on the cylindrical handle, when the bus tilted more suddenly, shaking aggravatingly, pushing me back in the position I was in before.

I held on to the handle tightly, the streaks of partially dried blood visible distinctly on my knuckles, as they turn white due to my grip on the metal bar.

I waited a few minutes, incase it moved again, but it didn't.

"Aaah!" A scream left my mouth when a loud bang resonated the metal walls of the bus, the origin of the noise being inches away from my right hand.

I was stunned. Couldn't move a limb. Taking a deep breath, I let it all out with an audible exhale.

Unclenching my fists slightly, I looked around in the eerily quite bus, wondering if I could find a conscious survivor.

A groan made my attention snap to a man diagonal to me. Blood was gushing out of his hand, and I resisted the urge to puke there and then.

"E-excuse me, s-sir?" I croaked, the lack of water and excess of wounds making me wince twice while speaking just two words.

He groaned again, looking around to find me.

"I-its okay. Don't m-" a hiss left my mouth, as the glass pieces dug deeper into the skin of my calf.

"D-don't m-ove. Much. Try getting u-up if you.."  I paused to catch my breath, the pain making it difficult to talk louder.

I heard some shuffling, but didn't make an effort to lift my head up and look.

A loud thud and a scream, from that man, made me swing almost upright, taking in the horror of the scene in front of me.

Blood. Flesh. Blood.

I will definitely have PTSD now.

"Aaaah! Shit! Oh god! Oh no! Oh g--" before the last word even left my mouth, another loud thud echoed in the bus, followed by my agonising scream. Again.

Because this time, a thick rod fell right on my left leg.

All tuesdays seemed to be hectic.

Kevin had different timings and so did Clarissa which made their mother go crazy at times.

"Kevin! Its already time and you will be late! Get down Kevin!" His mother yelled.
He was always late in the morning classes no matter what.

Isabella would be terribly tired sometimes because she had to manage the house as well as finish it before 9:00 as she would have to reach the play school at 9:30, where she was a teacher.

Kevin plopped down the stairs with his hair damp and tie undone.

Isabella gave him a stern look and he returned it with his not-my-fault sheepish smile.

She at last sighed and put his omelette on the table.

Just as she turned around her phone started ringing.

She washed her hands and went to the phone.

"Hello?" She answered the call.

"Is this some parent of Clarissa Brown?"

"Why? Who are you?"

"Ma'am this is officer James and miss Clarissa has been in a bus accident."

It took her a moment to comprehend what he said.

"Hello? Is someone on the line?"

"Uh..uh yes this is her mother. Uh..ho-how did it happen? Where is she right now? She left for her school just 30 minutes ago!"

"Yes. Indeed she was going to school in this bus and the bus toppled onto its side. She is being admitted in AD hospital."

She sucked in a deep breath, and answered, "yes."

"What happened mom? Why are you so worried?"

"Some officer called and told us that Claire has been in an accident. We should reach there soon. Call your father incase he isn't informed and come back outside. I am waiting in the car."

Kevin stared at her for a minute and then nodded hurriedly to follow the instructions.

________

Isabella and Kevin reached the hospital and enquired for the room where Clarissa was.

She still couldn't fathom that how could it happen in such a short time.

They climbed the stairs hurriedly and found room no. 309, where Clarissa was admitted.

Isabella had not expected to see her daughter laying unconcious on the bed, with barely any place not covered in bandages.

She had expected to see her daughter give out a weak, sheepish smile with a plastered hand and beckoning her to sit next to her in bed.

She took deliberate steps towards the bed, all the while controlling her tears.

She went near the bed and sat on the edge. Major part which was plastered was her left leg and there were minor bruises every where.

Kevin came next to her but did not take a seat. He put a hand on her shoulder as a gesture of offering comfort. But, she could hear him sniff all the while as she was.

___

Getting a call just after a few hours in the office to be informed about an accident your child has gone through was really a shock to him.

He pick up his phone to call but Isabella was not responding and so he quit trying.

He bolted towards the reception and with panted breaths asked the room number where his daughter was.

He tried to patiently wait for the elevator to arrive but failed miserably at that and sprinted upstairs, taking two steps at a time.

When he was about to enter the room he stopped short after what he was staring at. She was totally covered in bandages and her left leg was on a plaster.

And then there was Isabella, silently weeping and clutching her hand as if it was her life support. Kevin was sitting on the opposite side of the bed near Clarissa's right hand and David saw his midnight blue eyes moist.

He looked up and saw his father standing at the doorstep. He could see the unspilled tears in his eyes as he took in the condition in which his sister was.

His mother turned to look at what had taken Kevin's attention and when she saw that it was David, she broke down.

His father did not waste a second and marched towards them and his mother broke down even more after he took her in his arms. Kevin couldn't keep his own tears in and they escaped his eyes.

Just then a doctor came inside.

"Are you Mr. Brown?" He pointed towards David and he let go of Isabella and nodded firmly.

"There is something I have to talk to you about. Please follow me in my office and...just the two of you please." He pointed at the parents and strutted out of the room.

As they entered the room and took their seats, the doctor eyed them from head to toes, which made Bella quite uncomfortable.

She furrowed her eyebrows and turned to look at her husband who had the same confused expression plastered.

"Mr. & Mrs. Brown, is there something about your daughter which you think is very different?"
