Yellow Oval Room

The Yellow Oval Room served as the Kennedy family living room. Only certain people were invited into the residence and you would have to be of great importance to the Kennedys to be allowed in past the Secret Service. Jackie tried to make it into a family living room, reminiscent of the Jefferson-Madison era. It had bright yellow furniture to make it feel bigger.

In the living room there was several ashtrays as both adults smoked but JFK preferring cigars to cigarettes. There was also magazines and children's drawings too. Then joint on the room was the Truman Balcony which the Kennedys would sit on to view events happening on the South Lawn. If not that, they would get front view and go down to the lawn.

Many official photographs were taken in the Yellow Oval Room. For the September 1st 1961 issue of Life magazine, Jackie posed in an Oleg Cassini dress in the Yellow Oval Room and on the Truman Balcony.

Before state dinners, foreign leaders would be brought here for a private, formal exchange of foreign gifts before heading downstairs to dine. It was the most formal room in the private apartments.
