II
Trevor wasn't slow at all. His wings fluttered as he zipped off, with me close in tow. He'd glance back every once in a while. It was almost as if...
He was watching someone.
And against my own wishes, I took a glance back. And my eyes widened. Behind us, about fifty meters or so, sure enough, was the Blubardschnaud was stomping behind us, head turning as if it was looking for something.
And that something is me. I quickened my pace, attempting to catch up to Trevor, but to no avail. I opened my mouth to speak, but he cut me off.
"Are you barking crazy?" he whispered loudly, "Do you want us to get caught?" I immediately shut my mouth, keeping the silence that had existed between the two of us.
By the time Trevor had stopped, it was dark out, and we were near the mouth of an ominous cave. Trevor just zipped inside the cave, and I stopped in my tracks. He must've noticed that I wasn't following him, because he turned around and sighed. "There's no flippin' way that we'll make it there in one day mun!"
"Isn't there any other modes of transportation?" I asked, dusting off my pants, which were covered in dust and grass stains.
He scoffed. "No," he flew over to me, "Realize this Skylar. You don't realize how ahead youer world actually is. All we have on Mendwall are carriages. And I don't really want to risk you bein' discovered anytime soon," he then added when he saw my mouth open, "For reasons that are classified."
I shut my mouth. Realizing that he was right, I walked reluctantly into the cave's mouth. "I'll get the wood for a fire." Trevor remarked, and zipped off towards the outside, leaving me alone to my thoughts. I walked into the cave a bit, near the back, and dropped to the slick, dirty floor. It was surprisingly dry for it being slick.
I brought my knees close to my chest, my arms wrapping around my shins as my head rested upon my knees. 'I just want to go home.' That thought etched itself into the back of my mind. Home. The place in which my mother would have silence greeting her, my bed empty.
But what worried me even more was the thought of whether or not my mother would be able to handle. My disappearance. I heard the clashing of what seemed to be bundles of wood. I turned my head, and I was gazing into the purple eyes of Trevor.
"Are you alright mun?" he inquired. I shook my head. "I see," he flew closer towards my sitting form, "Look, kid."
"Skylar." I affirmed. And he's been my dog forever. Go figure.
"Look, Skylar," he restarted, "I may not be much of a parental figure, let alone a comforter of sorts, but I think that today has been an... Eventful day for you." He seemed cautious of his words, as he thought carefully as he spoke.
"Well, where did you get that idea?"
"I'm bein' serious here mun! Uh, I mean girl... That's besides the point. What I mean is, is that it will take some time until you are used to bein' 'ere in Mendwall, heck, it took me a while to get used to youer world!"
That... Didn't make me feel any better. "It's not that I'm worried about Trevor," I began, clutching my knees tighter, "It's more along the lines of my mother's well-being."
He was silent for a moment before asking "Why's that?"
"You still don't understand, don't you?" He just floated there, silently as I continued, "I'm and only child, with a single, widowed mom, that is on the edge when it comes to her health due to the fact that her work drives her past what she should be doing. We are not the god-like beings that you make us out to be. We are the opposite of that. We are vulnerable. Weak. And look at me, I can't even think about how dramatically I changed my life by unexpectedly coming here. My mom is probably worried sick as to where I am, I didn't even leave a note!" My breathing was ragged, my voice incoherent.
Trevor said nothing as he floated away, beginning to start a fire. I wasn't even about to ask how he'd start the fire, as he had no arms. I could see the oranges and reds dance around in my peripherals.
"Get some sleep," he ordered, "We have a long day ahead of us." I turned away from him, and took off my glasses, setting them on the dirty cavern floor. I laid down, my back to the fire, it's warmth entering me through my clothes, as I attempted to close my eyes, to catch some sleep.
The last thing I remembered hearing was a whisper. And it called out to me, saying "Watch your back. Always..."
Of course I slept for a while. By the time I woke up, Trevor had laid out some bread, to which I eyed suspiciously. Trevor noticed my glance, and nodded. I slowly grabbed the bread and broke it into bite-sized pieces.
After I had eaten of the bread, I stood up and dusted my clothes off, after putting on my glasses. "Where to-" I was cut off by Trevor's careful gaze.
"Not now." he whispered loudly. He seemed to be cautious, I could tell by the whisper. That for sure didn't help much. I guess you could say that all was not well, as Trevor Quickly looked outside of the cave.
I looked at him, a question burning in my mind. "Blasted Scnauds." he cursed under his breath.
"What?" I asked, attempting to peer outside. But it was dark, and I couldn't see a thing after three feet outside the entrance.
"The Blubardschnaud alerted the Necromercer to ouer presence, and that is what caused Nightlocke to take place." he explained harshly. He then flew out of the cave suddenly, and without warning.
"H-Hey!" I called after him, "Wait up!" I barely managed to catch up to him.
Trevor stopped abruptly yet again. "He's near... I can tell you that, so stay close to me. No matter what happens." He glanced back at me, and I nodded.
He began to fly ahead, and I followed. And we were at least halfway across the field before we heard a crash.
Well, new like a booming landing.
Trevor turned around to look at the source, and my gaze followed. I wish I hadn't looked back at it.
There, was the hulking armored figure, the blubardschnaud was right there, at the edge of our clear vision.
"Stand back kid." Trevor flew right in front of me.
The figure turned it's head, before it uttered "Hand over." It took a step forward, hand outstretched.
Trevor glanced back at me, before replying "Over my cold, dead body. Not to the likes of you."
If the figure was angry or agitated, I couldn't tell, but it only replied "Then face the punishment of death." It raised a fist towards the sky, a dark blue aura surrounding it.
Trevor cursed. "OUT OF THE WAY!" he ordered, and I obeyed.
And I'm glad I did. Because the figure then said "The wrath of Poseidon flows deep, the form of a hammer it makes... Come! Aquas' Pound!" It brought the fist down, and it was followed by swish, and suddenly, there was a huge drop of a clear fluid, and it fell where we were rather quickly.
There was another boom, and the ground cracked, and caves down towards the core of the world.
Trevor spoke, a bright yellow aura surrounded his body as he did so "Darn it... We have to fight back. The conscience of Ricken, the controller of currents... Take the form of a rapier... Come! Lancer's Pulse!"
Immediately afterwards, Trevor let out a puff of air, and there was a single-pointed gust much stronger than what he did, and I flew back a bit. It kept going, and the armored figure brought an arm to deflect the wind, and he stood in place firmly.
The gust went for a while, before there was a darker energy-like projectile that collided itself with Trevor, who fell over a bit, but his wings kept flapping.
"Fricken Necromercers... At this rate, we will be as good as lost." One of his eyes were shut, and he looked badly hurt.
"What's wrong Trevor? Is there anything I can do to help?" I asked him as I held his tiny spherical body.
"Not much, I'm afraid mun. Unless you know actual magic, or can displace the Nightlocke spell, then I'm afraid not."
I frowned. Why did I have to be so useless?!?!?! I shut my eyes tightly, waiting for what would come to pass. I just wanted to get away fron here, and back home. And that I wished to protect my friends. But something changed. I felt something new.
It was like a good feeling, and it was growing within me. I opened my eyes, and I heard a soft whisper, "You seek help. My aid you shall receive. The power flows deep within you, for your roots trace back to your home. Call upon my name, and make it take shape for your advantage." The voice went quieter, and it whispered a name.
I opened my eyes, my reslove anewed, and I stood up on my feet. I looked over towards the figures, now that the Necromercer showed up next to the armored one. My glasses were cracked, but I didn't mind it.
A new, light blue aura formed around my forearms and hands, and I began to speak "Help from above, whom of which gave way to power... Indebted to those who saved my case... The pure of heart allows this spell... Weigh the odds into my favor... Take form of a bomb... Come! Effie's Radiance!" My arms went into an X, and I swing them outwards.
There was a blast of bright blue, and everyone flew back. The day was bright again. The Necromercer wasn't lucky though. Their back slammed against a large boulder, and they stopped moving. The the blubardschnaud looked at him, and tested for a pulse, but then it lowered the arm.
The Necromercer was dead. The figure turned it's head to look at me, the eye holes were glowing a vibrant red. It stood up a bit too fluidly.
It stated at me, and I felt a chill down my spine. It walked slowly towards me. "What's up with it?" I panted out.
"Blubardschnauds go crazy if the Necromercer dies on their watch. You are in trouble now. I suggest you use another one!" He replied.
"What do you mean by another one?!" I was confused.
"Another flippin' spell darn it! You just used one!"
I looked at my hands, opening and closing them. What did he mean by that? I wouldn't... I couldn't...
Couldn't I have?
I shut my eyes and held my arms up, ready to defend myself, even though it'd be futile.
A new voice cried out, surprising me. "Likes of evil will dwindle... Before the might of a thimble... Thor's bolt strike clear... The evil that is near... Come! Tiamat's Revenge!" A masked man held a bright green aura-covered thumbs up, but slowly turned it down, and a bolt of lightning struck down towards the armored figure. And the armored figure collapsed.
"Gust Baron, Geist sends his regards."
"Creation Cavalier... Why did you come?"
"Isn't it obvious? It's for work... Besides, looks like another Mendigo is in the making..."
"Yes... Regrettably, this one was unintentional..."
"Very well then. Let's get going." He turned around to look at Trevor.
Trevor sighed. "Never thought I'd be saying this, but fine... I need help by 'ere." Creation laughed.
"I'll carry him. It's my fault he's like this..." I responded. Creation looked at me, but only for a second.
"Go right ahead then. I was just getting here. And don't worry. Gust may be mean and overbearing at time, but he means well and cares." He began to walk forward.
I knelled over to where Trevor was. I picked him up carefully. I held him in my arms, and I caught up to Creation.
"Where are we going Creation?" I asked him.
"To the headquarters. We need Geist's help to get you to your home."
I let out a sigh of relief. I'm on my way home finally.
