Categories + Judging Critera
Yes, this is a Jungkook award ceremony, but I want to give more people the chance to win. For that reason, there are categories.
You can submit to up to three different categories with different books. Do not submit the same book to different categories.
I tried to make the categories more fun than say just "romance" or "thrillers." I hope you enjoy the categories!
Categories:
1. Long-format (20+ chapters)
- 10 slots
- It's okay if it's ongoing, but you have to make sure it is planned to be over 20 chaps
- With that being said, only entries with at least 15 chapters will be accepted to this category
2. Short-format (Under 20 chapters)
- 10 slots
- It's okay if it's ongoing, but you have to make sure it is planned to be under 20 chaps
- Oneshots are allowed
- If you have a oneshot compilation and want to submit one specific Jungkook chapter, let me know the chapter name in your form
3. Fantastical (Anything sci fi, fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, etc.)
- 10 slots
- Demons, vampires, fairies, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, etc. all fall under this category
- Sci fi falls under this category as well; anything involving space, planets, dystopias, robots, etc. are allowed.
- Any length is allowed
4. Realistic (Anything realistic like rom-coms, thrillers, etc.)
- 10 slots
- Any length is allowed
5. Slow-burn (Any slow-burn stories from any genre, i.e., slow-burn romance, slow-burn sci fi, etc.)
- 10 slots
- Any length is allowed
6. Best Jungkook Character (Any stories that feel they have the best-written Jungkook)
- 10 slots
- Any genre/length can apply, even short stories or oneshots
- Submit to this category if you think you wrote a good, complex Jungkook; this is a character contest, so your plot, themes, worldbuilding, etc. will not be judged. Only submit if you are okay with that.
7. The Jungkook Showdown (every type of book is accepted; this is the overall award for 'best Jungkook fic.')
- 20 slots
- You should submit the book you are most confident in to this category
- Any length is allowed
If you are unsure what category your book would fit best in, feel free to ask. Make sure to mention your book's genre, length, planned length (if ongoing), and status (ongoing/complete).
If you are unsure, ask here.
Judging Criteria:
I said I would be transparent about what I judge based on, so here it is. I will provide examples so you know what I am looking for.
In order of importance, here is a list of the things I am judging:
1) Characters
- Are they unique? Do they matter to the story? Are they relatable? Do they have a clear arc? Do they have a balance of negative and positive traits?
2) Plot
- Is it written well and enjoyable? Even if the plot is simple, is it written in a creative way?
3) Worldbuilding
- Is the world fleshed out? Does the world feel alive?
4) Pacing
- Is there too much exposition? Is there no time for the audience to process what they just learned?
5) Themes
- Are the themes interesting?
6) Consistency
- Are you consistent with your plot/characters/world/themes? Are there plot holes?
7) Creativity
- Do you overuse cliché phrases such as "My heart skipped a beat?" Do you use cliché metaphors and similes?
8) Grammar/Spelling
- Everyone makes grammar and spelling mistakes, so I will not judge too harshly for this. I will only take off points if there are consistent and distracting errors.
- Example: consistent tense issues will always get points off because that is a major grammar issue. Tense issues are defined as stories that flip flop between present and past tense incorrectly. If you have a couple tense issues here and there, don't worry about that. It's the consistent tense issues that are a problem. I also take off points if you do not do dialogue tags correctly (it's my biggest pet peeve).
- Example 2: I will not take points off if you consistently misspell one or two words. Many people misspell took as toke. I will not take off for that. I will take off points if spelling errors are consistent and occur multiple times in every chapter.
9) Cover and blurb
- I know not everyone has the resources to make covers, therefore you will not be judged too harshly for this either.
Judging Criteria for the character category (not in order of importance, this is just what I look for):
1. Traits
- Is there a balance of positive and negative traits? Do the traits make sense?
2. Backstory
- Is Jungkook's background interesting to his current character? Even if the backstory is nothing special or traumatic or memorable, does it contribute to who he is in the present timeline of the story?
3. Arc/Journey
- How does Jungkook change? Does he change? Even if he doesn't change, does it service the plot?
4. Dialogue
- How does Jungkook speak? Do his words make sense for him to say? Does he have any OOC (out-of-character) moments?
5. Tropes
- How unique is the character? If he starts as a trope, does he change? Is it satire and the trope is done well? If Jungkook is made into a stereotypical character, does it service the plot?
6. Point of view
- If he gets a point of view, is it well-written? Is he ever OOC?
7. Emotions
- Am I attached to Jungkook? How do I feel about his character? Did the author execute Jungkook well, regardless of what his stance is in the story?
There are countless characters. Whether Jungkook is a protagonist, antagonist, side character, etc. doesn't matter. I will be judging based on how he serves his story, not how I personally feel about him. Despite what point 7 says, even if I hate the Jungkook, that could be an incredible thing if he's, say, the antagonist, or the author wants me to hate him.
So even if your Jungkook isn't the typical hero of the story, don't be scared to submit. I want a good character regardless of what he is to the story.
Let me know if you have any questions about the criteria.
