Vacation
A term anyone in the world would associate with joy, rest, a break from the dullness of the daily duties
But not Wednesday Addams
Especially not after such an... interesting time at Nevermore Academy
But now, she was back at the familiar sight of the dead forest that surrounded her family's residence, with the cold air hitting her pale skin without mercy, as a way to welcome her back home. Thing wasted no time in making himself comfortable
As pleased as she was to have fixed her relationship with his family, Wednesday couldn't stand her parents' incessant display of affection. It proved suffocating, and not the way she enjoyed suffocating
Which is why she was deep into the forest. The leaves crunched like bugs under her every step as the gray skies blessed her path with a distinct lack of vibrant colors
The cawing of a particular crow caught her attention, soon joined by another, and yet another. She followed the trail until she found what she came for, or rather, who
Waiting for her on a tree with his legs dangling off playfully, was the witch she had known ever since she was a child
Wednesday: As punctual as ever, I see
You: Good to see you too, killer
With a smirk, you jumped off, landing in front of her. The goth, however, just nodded at you
You: I read the copy you sent me. How's Viper de la Muerte doing?
Wednesday: Briefly feeling the satisfaction of solving a case only to be met with an ever bigger puzzle than previously anticipated
She gestured for you to follow her deeper into the forest, like a murderer luring prey, and of course, you complied
You: Interesting, but...
She looked at you from the corner of her eye
You: It's not really a work of fiction anymore, is it?
This made the girl shake her head
Wednesday: I admit, it became a sort of journal shortly after my arrival
The crows watched your every step and proceeded to fly closer when you were out of view
You: So I've heard. Sorry I couldn't be there for you, I was dealing with some witch hunters myself
She clenched her fists at the mention of such a thing, questioning the definition of a monster while you rubbed your still-sore wrists
Wednesday: I expect a vial with their blood
You: Already in your room
The girl smiled ever so slightly at the thoughtfulness, but this faint expression faded just as quick
Wednesday: However, we both know you were at Nevermore Academy
You raised a brow at this statement, but Wednesday's attention shifted to the crows that followed, recalling all the times she saw them at her school
Wednesday: Your loyal pets kept giving me clues whenever I was close to making a breakthrough in my investigation
Then, she placed a hand on her heart. She remembered vividly how the magic desperately clung to keep her alive after she was left for dead at Crackstone's grave. That same magic that gave her just enough time for Goody to make her move
Wednesday: And I know you cast a protective spell on me
Suddenly, she stopped walking to look up at you
Wednesday: I assure you I was perfectly capable of solving this myself
You rolled your eyes at this
You: How many times were you stabbed, cut, and hit with a metal object again?
Wednesday: That's irrelevant
Around four or five times
Her gaze remained as unexpressive as ever, but you just crossed your arms
Wednesday: Was this something my parents asked you to do?
You: No. It's something I chose to do
Wednesday: Because you don't believe I can handle myself
Suddenly, laughter bursted from you. Wednesday Addams wasn't one for surprises, but she... wasn't expecting this reaction
You: Of course you can handle yourself! You sent Crackstone back to hell where he belongs
Then, you placed a hand on her shoulder. She allowed it for the time being
You: I just want to make sure you stayed in one piece as you did
Wednesday noticed the tender smile you gave her. She hated it, especially how charming it was
After that fiasco with Tyler, she...she would rather not indulge in such feelings, at least not for the time being
She pulled your hand away before she spoke again. You took out a small flask and drank the blood inside it as she talked
Wednesday: I assure you, I too care about my survival...but the assistance was appreciated. Actually, that's what I wanted to talk about
The girl stopped walking and crossed her arms as she turned to you
Wednesday: I would like to enlist your services as a black magic user so I can defend myself better in the future
You spat out the blood you were drinking, making the crows on your shoulders fly away in fear. Wednesday flinched at the waste of good blood, but you wiped your mouth to talk to her
You: There's no way you would use it for defense
A brief smirk appeared on her face, made stronger by her black lipstick
Wednesday: No, I would not
And just like that, her seriousness returned
Wednesday: But if that encounter with Crackstone has taught me anything, is that I need more tools in my arsenal, and as much as it pains me to admit, conventional weapons can only do so much in cases like that
You caught a glimpse of her black eyes, the same ones people have demonized for their lack of emotion
Well, those people never gazed far enough into them, probably because they would be dead by then, but still
You noticed the determination she had, that characteristic drive she had, now mixed with the slight hint of uncertainty and even anger
You: That much is true
So you rubbed your chin as your crows returned to your shoulders, and exchanged glances with one of them before you turned to the girl
You: I...I guess I could teach you the basics
A horrible scowl followed your words. She took a step towards you with clenched fists
Wednesday: The basics? What do you take me for?
Of course, the tantrum had little to no effect
You: If you want to start a fire, make sure you can at least ignite a spark
She took another step closer
Wednesday: Supernatural or not, I'm a quick learner
You followed suit and got closer
You: I'll be the judge of that
Before she knew it, you were inches away from each other, the eye contact was so intense she could swear one of you could combust at any moment but as amusing as that would be, both of you needed to be alive for this to work
Wednesday:...Fine
Completely disregarding your boundaries, she got ahold of your wrist and walked away with you. You just shrugged, knowing arguing was futile, so you took another sip from your flask
Wednesday: But we begin now
Not to play another round of drowning (well, maybe later), but to extinguish any accidental flames that could occur in the process of learning
Once there, you took off your jacket and rolled up your sleeves, exposing the runes that had long been carved into your skin. She would never admit it, but Wednesday liked to look at them
But right now was hardly the time for such pleasantries. She stood in front of you and took off her coat as you rubbed your hands. The crows flew to the nearby trees to witness
You: Alright, killer. Let's go over the basics
...
It was the right call to practice near the lake. Unfortunately, that didn't save a small portion of the forest to burn down, rocks to be split in half easier than flesh would, giant claw marks to appear all over the place, or even the water itself to boil for a moment
You lied on the floor, your appearance slightly disheveled and even sporting some small cuts here and there. You took a deep breath before you noticed Wednesday stumbling her way to the shore
One of her sleeves was torn, her braids had loose hairs peeking through, and her hands had tiny burn marks now
You: Okay...I'd say that's a good place to stop for today
Wednesday fell to her knees in the spot she wanted to, and let out a deep breath. Her cold heart echoed as it stabilized her body
Wednesday: I...agree...
You got back up and rolled your sleeves back down as you looked around at the current state of the forest
You: I have to say, this place looks a lot less damaged than I thought it would
Wednesday: I told you I'm a quick learner
With a chuckle, you took a seat by her side, getting to appreciate the mysterious water before you. You could've sworn you saw something moving in there
Silence took over quickly, but as you glanced ever so slightly to see her, you noticed why with ease. She was lost in her own thoughts, hardly even looking at the water anymore, and yet, she was well aware that you were looking at her
Wednesday: Is there something in the matter?
You: I should ask you that. The whole Crackstone thing really left a mark, huh?
The goth gave you a look that said everything. You had no idea, not even with your crow spies
Sure, it was easy to touch on the times she was stabbed, shot with an arrow, or almost eviscerated, but the emotional turmoil she experienced in there?
The happiness, the sorrow, the loneliness, the various allies...the brief love?
Such infantile concepts, and yet here they were, tormenting her worse than a vengeful spirit
She still couldn't quite wrap her head around it, and she abhorred the lack of control she currently had over it
Despite all that, she found it in herself to provide you with an answer
Wednesday: It's not often that I find myself in the middle of a prophecy, much less one in which I'm a force of good
She looked down at her own hands, the paleness contrasting with the lake itself, even with the fog that was starting to appear
Wednesday: I uncovered so much about my family, about our impact here, and the enemies we continue to make by solely existing, as they continuously hunt us down through elaborate plans and deception. I even acquired my first stalker on my way here, but that is hardly relevant now
Your eyes widened at this information. That was...a lot to take in. Quickly, you regained your composure and spoke
You: Are...are you sure you don't want me to come with you next time?
The young Addams shook her head at the suggestion
Wednesday: With or without a conspiration, Nevermore Academy is a unique form of torture I do not wish upon anyone but myself. People already talk enough about me as it is, imagine if I brought someone along with me
Then, one of your crows landed next to her. She proceeded to pet it, knowing well she was the only person it wouldn't attack
Wednesday: But I will be sending you texts, so it's in your best interests to answer
You raised a brow at this. She might as well have told you black isn't her favorite color
You: Since when do you have a phone?
She stopped petting the crow to bring out a black smartphone from a pocket. Still rather new by the looks of it
Wednesday: It was a gift
You felt your jaw nearly dropping. It was just one surprise after another with her, wasn't it?
You: Someone bought you a phone like that as a gift? Tell me who it is so I can be their friend too
While you laughed at your own joke, Wednesday shuddered at the idea of such an alliance
Once the laughter died down, you leaned back and let out a sigh, and looked at the sky. Still a light gray, but it provided an odd sense of comfort
You: I know you just called on me to learn black magic, but...It's good to see you, Wednesday
She seemed to tense up once she heard that, but before you could question her about it, Wednesday spoke
Wednesday: Believe it or not, I did not call you just for that
Intrigued, you turned to her, only to find the girl's gaze back at the lake, with the fog becoming stronger than ever
You: Oh?
Wednesday: These last days have been nothing but erratic, bashful theories and mistrust of some individuals that perhaps deserved better treatment. Not even my family was spared from such a behavior
Slowly, she glanced over at you, her black eyes meeting yours directly
Wednesday: You provide the quiet and calm I need right now. Like the stillness of a funeral once the weeping guests finally leave the corpse alone
A strange warmth took over your body upon hearing that, but the young Addams just shifted her attention back to the lake
You: Wow, I...thank you, Wednesday
Wednesday: I'm just speaking my mind
She always said it so nonchalantly, but it meant so much. A complement of the most unique and strange kind coming from a being such as her
Unbeknownst to you, these last days have taught the girl to reconsider her bonds, not just questioning them, but, well, cherishing the ones she already had
But that's when something crossed your mind, and the sudden spark in your eye did not go unnoticed
You: Speaking of calm and gifts, I got something for you
A groan left her black lips as she recalled the black snood a certain werewolf gave her for her birthday
Wednesday: Please don't tell me it's a crochet snood. I had trouble getting rid of the last one
You gave her a weird look, but upon realizing she would not elaborate on that, you reached out and from black smoke, you pulled out a beautifully wrapped black box
You: I wanted to give you this on your birthday, but I heard you were...busy
Wednesday: Did Thing tell you?
The goth crossed her arms
You: Thing told me, yes
Then, you handed it to Wednesday, who brought out a knife and flawlessly got rid of the wrapping, keeping her seemingly expressionless eyes on you the whole time
The moment the wraps were gone, Wednesday was met with a beautiful black music box. A blackwood box with red details akin to splatters of blood, but placed so strategically it blurred the lines between madness and beauty
The girl's eyes went slightly open at the sight of this gift
You: Go on, open it
She spared a brief glance at you and then opened the music box to reveal a small dancer in a black dress similar to hers, and when she began to spin, the following melody began to play:

A gasp could be heard from her, barely audible, if you paid enough attention you could not mistake it. She turned to you with a spark in her eye, almost child-like
Wednesday: Is that...
You: Camille Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre, indeed
This time there was no mistake, a smile had formed on the goth's face. She returned to the music box and you watched her chest rise and fall as a heavy breath left her
Wednesday: I did not request a gift for my birthday
Her near-enthusiasm inevitably got a smile out of you, knowing well this would be as much emotion as you would get from someone like her
Wednesday: But this, this is more than adequate...thank you
You: My pleasure
What you didn't know is that you had just given her one of her most precious possessions ever, but that was her secret to keep. She considered bringing it over to Nevermore with her when the time came, but considering how her belongings were treated last time, this thought was quickly discarded
She caressed the box one last time with her delicate hands and closed it for good, opting to listen to the melody another time
Wednesday however, didn't let go of it, and instead kept it on her lap
The sound of thunder echoed in the distance before a drop of rain fell on your cheek, then another, and yet another one. You were quick to cast a barrier above the two of you
While the two of you had absolutely no issue with getting wet, you did have some things you'd rather keep away from the rain
Wednesday scooted closer to you to make better use of this spell, just in time before the rain grew stronger. The unmistakable smell of petrichor filled your lungs, something that never got old
Wednesday: Y/N
She got a hum out of you, opening your eyes ever so slightly to look at her, while she kept holding on to the music box
Wednesday: These last days have made me think back on a lot of things. In both events and the bonds I had, I've questioned a lot, strengthen others, and even forged new ones
You tilted your head as you listened, but when she looked at you, you made accidental eye contact. Luckily for you, she lived for that awkwardness
Wednesday: What I'm trying to say is... this bond with you has yet to disappoint me
You opened your mouth to talk, only for her to stop you with a gesture of her hand
Wednesday: But I am not currently ready for romantic developments after the last incident, so if you act despite my warnings I will pluck your eyes out and leave you tied for your crows to feast on
Slowly, she lowered her hand as if to invite you to talk once again
You: You should know better than threaten me with a good time
She tilted her head, but then saw the smile creeping on your face as you snickered
You: But seriously. Romance or not, I just missed you
The girl stared at you for a moment and nodded, turning back to the lake with you following suit
You were definitely curious as to what she meant with "the last incident", but you figured that was something for another time
Especially when you suddenly felt her head resting against your shoulder. She had her eyes closed and her expression as cold as ever
But you knew this gesture was anything but, and you knew better than to question her about it, so you just enjoyed it
As for Wednesday herself, she let out a barely audible sigh, basking in the order that cut a swathe through her chaotic thoughts like a proper blade would to the tender muscle
Okay, maybe a vacation wasn't so bad after all
