Ch.9 Exceptions for Expectations
The first day of hero training had come to a close, but instead of heading back to her house, Hailey remained in the classroom, changed back into her school uniform. Some of her other classmates remained as well, all for the same reason: they awaited Midoriya's return. Like herself, they were impressed by his performance from the training battle.
Since Midoriya was the only student who needed to visit the infirmary, some of the students were chatting with one another. Hailey smiled to see everyone getting along and growing close friendships with each other.
She was chatting with Kirishima, Kaminari and Sero, all discussing small-talk topics.
"No, no, I am telling you that actually sounds good, I have such a sweet-tooth that my friends would be concerned for me." Hailey giggled.
Kirishima shook his head and stuck out his tongue, "No way, white chocolate is too sweet for me, I couldn't imagine adding any more sweet stuff to that."
"So, you like sweet things." Kaminari grinned cheekily at Hailey.
"Yep, I like a lot of things actually. My old classmates always made sure to point out that 'Hailey likes everything' when I didn't end up liking something, meaning that its dislike was completely warranted." Hailey remarked.
"That's cool, so anything food-related a no-go for you? Like, say-" Kaminari tried to act sly and suave, but Sero and Kirishima glared in annoyance at him.
"Dude seriously?"
"This is kind of sad to watch."
Just then, Midoriya shyly entered the classroom, his costume tattered and his arm in a sling. Upon noticing his entrance, Hailey stood up from her desk and rushed up to her greenhaired classmate.
"Midi! I'm glad you're okay." Hailey smiled at him, but noticed the condition of his costume and frowned in sympathy. "Sorry to see your costume like that, it was a gift after all and was really cute."
"I-I'm sure my mom will understand." Midoriya assured, scratching the back of his head with his uninjured hand.
"The way that you acted during today's training was really inspiring, Midi." Hailey exclaimed with excitement, "You reminded me how I wanted to become a symbol of courage as a hero and the reason that I came to this school in the first place. So let's continue to do our best together, alright?"
Midoriya smiled widely, "Yeah!"
Their classmates then surrounded Midoriya with excitement, introducing themselves and questioning him about his skills and quirk.
Hailey stepped back from the circle and smirked as she watched her friend get a small taste of fame, she was proud of him for making a good impression with the class.
Surprisingly, Midoriya asked for Bakugou's whereabouts, when Kirishima answered that he had already left, Midoriya rushed out of the classroom, in what Hailey guessed were in hopes of catching up to him for whatever reason.
"Guess I better head out too." Hailey decided and grabbed her bookbag. "See you guys tomorrow."
"Hey Roselle, let me walk out with ya." Kirishima called to her, grabbing his bag and saying goodbye to his friends and classmates as well, then following her out into the hallway.
As the two walked the building, they continued in small talk.
"Sorry about Kaminari, dude doesn't seem to know when a moment calls for something, he seems to miss the point." Kirishima apologetized for his friend.
"No worries, he didn't do anything wrong." Hailey reassured, not entirely sure what it was that Kaminari did wrong.
"He was gonna ask you out on a date, that's what all that food talk was." Kirishima reiterated, noticing that she didn't completely understand.
"Oh! I thought he was just being friendly." Hailey laughed, "He needs to work on his delivery if he wants to snag a date, with anyone for that matter."
"True enough." Kirhsima chuckled.
"I feel like I've been only talking about myself with you and the guys, so c'mon." Hailey nudged Kirishima, "Tell me some stuff about you, Kiri."
Kirishima pondered for a moment, trying to think of some interesting facts about himself, "I don't know what's too interesting about me, but my favourite hero is Crimson Riot. The guy is so cool and manly!
"That's where I recognize your hairstyle from!" Hailey exclaimed, catching Kirishima off guard. "You based it off of Crimson, or it's just so similar to his! I was gonna ask if you two are related or something."
"No relation, I promise." Kirshima assured, "I was really inspired by him, since our quirk are kinda similar and his manly ideals."
"That's really cool though, that you a connection like that with him." Hailey encouraged.
"Which pro do you look up to?" Kirishima inquired.
"I thought we were talking about you." Hailey retorted in amusement.
"C'mon, now I'm curious, Rosie." Kirishima urged, while also trying out a nickname himself.
Hailey's smile indicated that it was a good nickname and she answered his question, "I love lots of heroes, but if we're considering the sentimental connection, I'd say Majestic is one of my favourites. His magic quirk is kind of like my wavelengths, when I was first learning how to use my quirk for heroing, I used his quirk for visual reference."
"That's really cool." Kirishima nodded, "You know, I didn't really know what to think of our first days here or this school in general, but I'm glad that someone like you is here with me."
"Aw Kiri, that's so sweet, I'm glad you're here with me too. It'll be an interesting couple years to come."
"Hopefully in a good way." Kirishima agreed as they exited the school building.

Mr Aizawa returned to his classroom, empty of all students as they all had returned home earlier. The one time of the day where it was quiet in the school, where the teachers and staff could get a thought in without the busy students.
"Heeeeey Erasure!" Present Mic greeted with loud enthusiasm.
Aizawa squinted his eyes in annoyance, as he was no longer in a quiet environment.
"What is it Mic?" Aizawa grumbled.
"Well, I came to tell you that you'll never guess who I ran into just now!" Mic exclaimed.
"I'm not sure, who did you run into?" Aizawa answered, clearly not amused by his colleague's interruption.
"An old friend, you could say." A woman's voice piped up, when Aizawa directed his attention to the door, he recognized the person standing there. "Hey there, Shouta."
"Mel."
"He's all yours." Present Mic laughed, patting the woman's shoulder as he exited the room.
"Thanks Hizashi."
Mel, otherwise known to the pro hero as Melodie Roselle, was interning with different agencies while the other two were third years at U.A. They've crossed paths many times so that it wasn't a surprise that they were on friendly terms. Melodie was the one that helped Aizawa upgrade his equipment as she was trying to start her agency.
"Thought I recognized your daughter's last name on the class list." Aizawa remarked.
Melodie chuckled, "I recognized yours as well in the information panflit, figured Hailey would be fine with you as a teacher."
"Really? Has she complained about me yet?" Aizawa inquired, his mood a lot lighter than a few moments prior.
"No she hasn't actually. " Melodie answered, sitting on the table of a desk. "She really likes the change of pace. Though she wasn't your biggest fan yesterday, I'll give you that. But you don't sugarcoat things like her other teachers have done, which in the long run, really screwed her over."
"Oh? That's interesting, what school did she go to?" Aizawa inquired.
"Marlain Jubilee, right by Tsu'kasa." Melodie replied, shaking her head at the memory.
"Rural farm town? Never thought that's where you'd have ended up." Aizawa commented.
Melodie sighed, "Yeah, me neither. But the main thing is; is that Hailey's here for a better chance at following her dream. Which is why I booked an appointment to meet with you, but I'm assuming that I traumatized you with the last time I lectured you."
"That was about the material for my binding cloth, this is about your daughter. I also want to hear what you think you need to lecture me on this time." Aizawa remarked.
"It's not so much a lecture, sorry, it's more of just.. asking for help, for my daughter." Melodie hesitated.
Aizawa frowned, "If this is a request to make help her do well, then it's a no. I don't condone favouritism."
"It's not like that, I promise. It's more of just-" The blonde woman took in a breath to regain her composure and rethink her phrasing. "Hailey's had a rough last two year, her father and I separated officially two months ago and it wasn't a surprise that she got diagnosed with anxiety and depression. She wants nothing more than to be a hero, but it'll be harder for her if things get too piled up and she has the tendency to isolate herself and go to a dark place that is so hard for her to get out of. Hailey does her best not to worry me, but with me running Hondashu, I'm no longer the ideal support system. I need help in knowing that she'll be taken care of."
"I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised when I tell you that she is well liked among her peers so far. So, I'm sure that she'll have a multitude of friends soon enough that are willing to help her through it all." Aizawa assured, as he processed all of the information presented to him.
A smile spread on Melodie's face, "Really? I was worried that she wasn't telling me everything so that I wouldn't barge in here, guns blazing."
"And here we are." Aizawa chuckled.
"Right, but still, would you look out for her if she gets really quiet or doesn't seem like herself, call me?" Melodie requested with pleading eyes.
Aizawa let out a sigh, "I'll let you know if I notice her spiralling."
"Thank you, I knew that if there was anyone to count on, it was you." Melodie said with great appreciation.
"You didn't ask Hizashi the same thing before coming here?" Aizawa questioned.
"No, he was too focused on arranging a get together so that we could all catch up." Melodie chuckled, "I think he's just mad that I left and had a 'secret child'."
"Pretty sure he was too mad that we had an important last minute mission that we missed the baby shower, so he forgot there was a child to begin with." Aizawa laughed.
"But, it would be nice to set a night to just catch up with each other." Melodie smiled, hopping off the desk, "Thank you for meeting me, Shouta, have a good night."
"You too."
