Ch.8 One-Sided Efforts
"That was..intense bro." Hailey breathed out in relief when All Might proclaimed that the first hero team were the victors.
On the screen, Midoriya collapsed onto the ground as he had exerted his stamina and power.
'With a quirk like that, he's going to have to work so much harder than the rest of us." Hailey thought in her head, as she was worried for her friend, but also in a way, inspired by him as well.
"Iida is the MVP for this battle!" All Might announced as the other three students returned to the monitor room, as Midoriya was sent to Recovery Girl's infirmary.
"Shouldn't it be one of the heroes, since they won?" Asui asked.
"Can anyone take a guess as to why?" All Might inquired to the students.
Yaoyorozu raised her hand and proceeded to answer. She explained how Iida embraced his role of a villain and adapted to his surroundings, while Bakugou's judgment was clouded by his personal grudge with Midoriya. Midoriya's plans were poorly thought out and Uraraka let her guard down midway through battle and lost focus. Iida was fully prepared for his opponent's arrival and so on.
"Hey, way to go Iida! You deserve it!" Hailey congratulated him and offered him a high five.
As All Might went on to begrudgingly agree with Yaoyorozu's insights, being that she completely nailed the explanation, Iida looked at Hailey's hand in confusion. Hailey stood up on her tiptoes to get a little closer to Iida's height, Iida then realized what it what that she wanted and gave her an awkward and stiff motioned tap on the palm of her hand with his own.
Then All Might pulled the next hero and villain teams to go next.
A rush of anticipation and excitement went through Hailey's nerves as she, Todoroki and Shoji were announced to be the next hero team and their opponents would be Ojiro and Hagakure.
Many scenarios and ideas popped into Hailey's head, as she recalled what her opponent's and teammates' quirks were.
'I don't really think I'll stand a chance if I end up against Ojiro, his tail looks strong and fast, plus I remember him saying that he was in martial arts, so yeah maybe no. Hagakure might be easier if I use my echo location quirk, that is if she takes her gloves and boots off- dude she's running around naked... moving on from that because I don't wanna think about that. Shoji looks pretty strong with his extra appendages and Todoroki- shit what is his quirk again?' Hailey then had to think about what her classmate's power really was, trying to speculate and predict. 'Okay, guess he didn't use it yesterday, so since his dad has a fire quirk and I think his mom had an ice quirk, he has to have a quirk of one of those - maybe both, that would explain his hair being split into two different colours.'
As the three heroes approached the building, Hailey turned to her classmates to make a suggestion.
"Hey, my quirk can let us know if the bomb is on this level and if the villains are on this floor."
"Go ahead." Shoji nodded, "I'll offer assistance if I hear anything."
Todoroki nodded his head too, but didn't offer a verbal response.
Hailey cautiously stepped into the building, being weary in case the villains were to ambush them before they even entered the scene. Then, Hailey charged up five light grey rings around her wrists and smacked her palms to the ground and released the waves, they became transparent as they travelled across the hard concrete surfaces, only for seconds later returning to Hailey, where she was able to visualize the surface area of what the waves had hit and ricochetted back to her.
"There's no one on this floor, but there's a staircase leading upstairs, my waves got weaker on the second floor, so I'd be just guess that that one is clear too." Hailey told her teammates then looked to Shoji for confirmation, "What are you hearing, Shoji?"
Shoji used his quirk to hear beyond what Hailey could search, "It sounds like they are both on the fourth floor, one is in the hallways, both are barefoot."
"No doubt that Hagakure will use her quirk to her advantage to ambush us as defense." Hailey predicted. "Meaning that Ojirou will be guarding the bomb, since his martial arts are strong and more of use in that spot."
She looked to Todoroki for his input, but he instead stepped ahead of his teammates.
"For your safety, stay outside." He instructed, unprompted.
Hailey and Shoji shared a look of confusion, but still obligued with his 'request'.
"What's your play, Todoroki?" Hailey inquired, as she stood beside Shoji outside the building.
"I am certain that our opponent's plan on fighting us with a defensive battle." Todoroki explained, placing the palm of his hand on the concrete wall. Frost began to emit from his hand and soon enough, ice encased the wall and floor of the building. "But we've already won."
Hailey was amazed by Todoroki's quirk, but she quickly snapped out of her awe and turned to Shoji. "Do you think you could handle down here, in case maybe they try to escape or we need backup?"
Shoji nodded in response, agreeing that he could, but asking what she was planning to do.
"I'll offer Todoroki support on the fourth floor, so he doesn't get outnumbered because they have a different plan." Hailey stated, giving Shoji a thumbs up, which to her delight, he returned the gesture.
She then created four translucent turquiose wavelength rings around her ankles as Hailey crouched down in a readied position before jumping into the air, where her wavelengths launched her to the window of the fourth floor, where Todoroki's ice had already encased the room, bomb and Ojirou in place.
Before Hailey could remark about how powerful Todoroki's quirk was, he entered the room, a menacing aura surrounding him. Todoroki warned Ojirou about how he could try and pry his feet out of the ice, that is, if he didn't need the skin under his feet.
"Give up now, villain?" Hailey questioned, making her presence known as she leaned into the room through her grasp onto the frame of the window. "Yo teammate, need some help with confisacting the weapon or detaining the villains?"
"No, I can handle this." Todoroki answered bluntly, placing his other hand on the weapon. What surprised Hailey was that instead of ice, heat sizzled from his palm and he melted the ice that he previously created. He looked to Ojirou, who he had freed, "It's not your fault, we're just on different levels."
Hailey's expression turned into one filled with distaste to Todoroki's behaviour, as he was not the person that she expected him to be. Then again, what was there for her to expect anyways? They were strangers. She knew that. Hailey hardly remembered her youth to begin with, the only real memory that she could recall was when she and her family moved into her childhood home. She was four.
So what called for this disappointment?
