Ch.4 Let's Do Our Best

And so, the testing began.

With the 50-meter dash, Hailey was able to discover the quirks of her remaining classmates who hadn't yet told her about them. Yet contrasting, Hailey almost didn't want to expose what her quirk actually was, for sake of dramatic flare.

She debated what her strategy was as she witnessed Midoriya compete against Bakugou, Midoriya sprinted without the assistance of his quirk, while Bakugou used his explosions to launch himself across the finish line before the green-haired male. Hailey noted that Midoriya admitted earlier that he frequently worked out where sports would have filled in his free time, and without the help of a quirk, his time to cross the finish line would be the average expectancy for other students who couldn't use their quirks to speed themselves up.

'I can beat seven seconds, and I'm sure Midoriya beat a few people too, like that gross grape guy.' Hailey then felt chills go down her spine at the mere mention of Minoru Mineta. 'He keeps staring at us girls when we bend down to start running and that literally is so uncomfortable.'

"Hagakure, Roselle, you're up next." Mr Aizawa called, as he read from his clipboard.

Hailey lined up at the starting line, beside her was an invisible quirked girl, whose uniform was the only visible attribute she could see.

As Mr Aizawa started to countdown the mark, Hailey charged up her quirk, three translucent rings surrounded each of her ankles. When their teacher said 'go', Hailey used her quirk to boost her forward, using another boost when she took another running step. She was first to cross the line and she immediately wondered if her classmates saw the rings turn into a turquiose colour when she pushed off.

"2.1 seconds for Roselle." Mr Aizawa noted out loud as he wrote down the time on his clipboard paper.

"Wow, that is better than what I expected." Hailey grinned with pride.

Next up was the grip test, Hailey wasn't sure how to use her grip to increase her strength, so she paired up with Midoriya. Midoriya offered for her to go first and handed her the grip tester.

"Okay, gotta find the right motivator," Hailey said as she wiggled her fingers on the grip.

"The right motivator?" Midoriya repeated in confusion.

Hailey nodded, "Yeah, yeah, like a reason why I am squeezing the life out of this thing." Hailey then squeezed the grip as hard as she could, being very dramatic about it. "Squeeze the last of the toothpaste out of the tube! Holding the door shut so no robbers get in my room! Don't take my pencil Yura, I will throw you over the desk again!"

Midoriya chuckled at Hailey's goofy nature and performance.

"Did that help?" He asked.

Hailey nodded, "Got 54.0, not sure if that's average but I'm happy with it." She then handed the grip tester to Midoriya. "Your turn now."

As he took the tester, Midoriya tried to think of his own motivator to help him squeeze the grip at a reasonable power that would give him needed points to not be in last place.

He looked up to Hailey, who gave him two thumbs up and an encouraging grin. Midoriya couldn't help but feel inspired by her optimistic and positive attitude, her bright light didn't flicker or dim at all, growing brighter as she supported these strangers around her.

"Think of it as you squeezing all of the negative crap you dealt with all of your life and then you'll be filled with sunshine and happiness if it all gets out." Hailey improvised an idea.

"That's one way to visualize something." Midoriya remarked.

But in actuality, as he thought about it, Midoriya squeezed hard, refusing to loosen his grip as he wanted to forget all of the negative experiences in his life. Midoriya's eyes were tightly shut as he kept squeezing. When he finally relented, he looked to the grip tester and saw that his score was 56.0 kg. He thought that he had done better, but sighed in defeat.

Hailey peered over to see for herself, "Hey good job! You did better than I did, but it's neat that we're around the same."

"Yeah."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next came the standing long jump.

Hailey would have preferred for it to be a running long jump, but historically, she always stepped over the board that indicated when you had to jump.

Based off of other students, Hailey figured that as long as she didn't land within the sandbox itself, she was in the clear.

Hailey tried to visualize her quirk output and how much would get her to her desired distance.

The memory of her training with her friends came to mind as she remembered how she used too much of her quirk to boost herself, she went too far and shrieked out a 'shiiiiiiiit'! It was on Yuri's phone and he loved to bring it up whenever he felt like using it as blackmail.

'Well if I'm going to do that, may as well make it look graceful.' Hailey thought to herself, believing in 'may as well'.

"Alright Roselle, you're up." Mr Aizawa called to her to line up.

She did what she was told, she lined up and took in a deep breath.

Hailey glanced to her teacher, who nodded for her to proceed.

She bent down into a readied position and charged up her quirk, three translucent rings reappeared around her respective ankles and she launched herself into the air, she turned her body so it span in the air and she landed on the ground gracefully, her left leg stuck out. The spin turned Hailey around so she was now facing the sandpit that she jumped over.

"Ooh!" Some of her classmates cheered, some clapping.

Hailey made note to mention this to Yuri, as he would appreciate her half salchow.

After a few more tests were conducted; line stepping, situps, long-distance run, and seated toe touch. All of them she did well at, with the help of her quirk and her training in figure skating and basic gymnastics. All that was left was the ball throwing portion.

There was no worry that Hailey had about the testing anymore, as she believed that she did extremely well on what she could.

Finally, it was her turn to pitch the ball.

Hailey stepped into the white circle and picked up the softball. She gave it a few spins in the palm of her hand before she winded up her arm. Hailey visualized that she wanted the ball to circle around the world, even though it wasn't possible via her abilities. Five translucent rings appeared around her right wrist and as Hailey threw the ball, they became visible with a bright turquoise glow and then the ball was launched straight through the forestry. The output that was released shook some of Hailey's classmates as some stumbled against the sensation.

Hailey Roselle

Quirks: Wavelength Manipulation and Voice Mimic

Hailey can use sonic wavelengths to boost her speed, strength, and jumps. She can control the visibility based on the output of power she uses - the more bright in colour, the more powerful. She can also sense when someone is near with an 'echo-wave' when releasing a wavelength and it bounces back to her. When exposed to certain wavelengths for a certain period of time, Hailey can recreate them. If she uses it too much, her ears begin to ring and she will bleed from her nose and ears based on its usage.

Voice Mimic allows Hailey to sound like any person or thing whose voice she's heard for a certain amount of time, making her an ideal actress.

"1500 meters." Mr Aizawa read from the tracking device.

"Woah... that is-that is just way farther than what I expected." Hailey grinned cheekily as she exited the circle and rejoined her friends.

"Dude! That wavelength quirk is so cool!" Kirishima complimented in excitement.

"Aw thanks Kirishima." Hailey thanked.

"Yeah, it's so powerful!" Midoriya added, also being enthusiastic.

"Alright Midoriya, you're up." Mr Aizawa called for the greenhaired boy to step up.

"Midoriya better shape up or he'll be the one going home." The tall blue haired male that Hailey remembered was Tenya Iida pointed out.

Then Bakugou chimed in, "Huh? Of course he is, he's a quirkless loser."

Hailey and Iida shared expressions of confusion, but mostly offense from Hailey's end, towards Bakugou.

"Midoriya isn't quirkless, how else did he destroy that huge robot during the entrance exam?" Hailey asked, very sharply as she defended her new friend. "That doesn't sound like someone who's a loser."

Everyone directed their attention to Midoriya, watching as he charged up his throwing arm, anticipation was felt by the class. But as Midoriya threw the ball, it landed at a very disappointing distance.

"With all that charge up?" Hailey gasped in surprise.

Midoriya stared down at his hands with horror and disappointed confusion, "W-W-What the- I was trying to use it."

"I erased your quirk." Mr Aizawa explained, going on to say how wrong the judges were for allowing someone like Midoriya to come to this school. He called out Midoriya for being a liability with how using his quirk ends up breaking his bones.

The expression on Midoriya's face broke Hailey's heart, even more so when Mr Aizawa criticized Midoriya's power and said that he would never be a hero.

"You're kidding right? What kind of teacher-" Hailey went to defend Midoriya, but was held back by Kirishima.

"Hey, calm down!" He insisted with a whisper, "Maybe Midoriya will prove him wrong."

When Mr Aizawa allowed Midoriya's quirk to return, he instructed him to make a final throw. Bakugou commented how Midoriya was a waste of space and should pack his bags.

"Bakugou, do not be rude." Iida scolded.

"You know, being an asshole for no reason is a pretty bad look for a hero." Hailey quipped at Bakugou, glaring harsh at him.

Bakugou turned to her and shouted at her in anger, "You got a problem with me, Tomato Girl?!"

Hailey didn't back down, crossing her arms in front of her chest, "Yeah, yeah, actually I do. We're classmates and we're going to be for a long time, so instead of insulting people and bringing everyone down, try maybe being nice? Maybe even encouraging. You might actually make some friends. So instead of making everyone think that you're just a villain in a hero school, clean up your attitude, be respectful to Midoriya and the rest of us. Quirk or no quirk, I think that anyone can be a hero!"

Bakugou clenched his fist in anger and got closer to Hailey, "What makes you think you're better than me and that you can tell me how to act? You're just a naive bitch."

"I'm giving you constructive criticism, you asshat." Hailey shot back.

Hailey turned back to watch Midoriya, ignoring Bakugou's grumbling and giving Midoriya an encouraging smile and nod.

She watched as Midoriya picked up the ball and and threw the ball from a wind up, similar to the one he watched Hailey do and he threw the ball a lot farther than his first one. Turns out he charged his throw last minute from his fingertip.

"Mr Aizawa." Midoriya looked to his teacher, "I'm still standing." He said, biting his and holding his hand in a bit of pain, bringing notice to his broken finger.

"Yeah, Midoriya!" Hailey cheered with her other excited classmates.

But Bakugou's expression shifted from complete shock, to complete rage.

"DEKU YOU BASTARD! TELL ME HOW YOU DID THAT OR I'LL KILL YOU!" Bakugou screamed, launching himself at the poor boy while explosions erupted from the palms of his hands. Luckily for Midoriya, Bakugou was restrained by Aizawa's scarf cloth.

"Stand down." He mediated with a harsh and stern tone. "It would be wise for you not to make me use my quirk so much, it gives me serious dry eye."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The end of the school day had finally arrived, Hailey stood at the gate of the campus, feeling full of accomplishment, while still exhausted from the events from the day. She was relieved that Mr Aizawa's threat of expelling the student who placed last place in the testing was merely a ruze to make sure that everyone did their absolute best.

It was a relief that Midoriya wasn't leaving the school on the first day, being that he was the student with the lowest score - she honestly thought it was going to be Mineta, but one can only dream.

"Hey Roselle!" Midoriya called to her, as he walked up to her, his finger bandaged.

"Hey Midoriya, how's your finger? I've had some broken bones before so I know the pain." Hailey asked, and gently held his hand to examine it.

Midoriya let out an embarrassed squeal and his faced flushed a bright pink.

Hailey figured that her eagerness was making him uncomfortable and let go of his injured hand and sheepishly apologized for not asking first.

"I'm sorry- my bad, I should have asked first."

"N-No, it's okay! Really." Midoriya assured, "To be completely honest, I'm not used to having a friend, especially like you."

Hailey tilted her head, "'Like me'? I hope you mean it as a good thing."

Midoriya nodded, "Yeah, it is a good thing, I promise! It's just if I had a friend like you growing up, maybe I'd be more confident in my quirk and maybe myself."

Hailey gently bumped Midoriya's shoulder with her fist in a friendly manner, "Well then consider the next few years as us making up for the missed possibility."

"Really? You mean it?" Midoriya questioned in disbelief.

"Of course, you're gonna turn out to be one of the best heroes ever, I can feel it in my bones." Hailey grinned.

Just then, her phone buzzed, indicating that she got a text message. Hailey pulled out her phone and read the text message from her mother, saying that she could take the train or she could call a taxi to give her a ride home.

"Sorry, it's my mom telling me that I have to find my own means of transportation getting home tonight." Hailey shrugged, as she texted her mother that she would just take the train back.

"Oh, do you life far from here?" Midoriya inquired.

"Uhm kinda, just forty five minutes away. I think Todoroki lives close to me, but he already left so I'll just take the train." Hailey answered.

"I can walk with you if you want, you've been really nice to talk to." Midoriya offered, "And you've been so kind to me all day."

"Sure! Just don't get too annoyed with me when I try and come up with some nicknames for you! It's my specialty!" Hailey giggled as the two began to walk together.

"O-Okay, should I come up with some for you too?" Midoriya asked.

"You can if you want, I haven't had many good nicknames, my mom called me 'Butthead' for the longest time, my friends back at home call me 'Hails' so there was a little improvement." Hailey responded cheerfully. "But for you, I think I'll call you 'Midi' or 'Mido', how do those sound?"

Midoriya smiled, "I like both of them, you can call me whichever you like more."

"Midi it is then!"

Midoriya then looked up and pondered out loud what names came to his mind, "Roselle.. so there'd be 'Ro', 'Rosellie'- eh, those don't sound right."

"It'll be a process, so don't feel bad if nothing comes up at first." Hailey reassured her friend.

"R-Right." Midoriya then became sheepish, scratching his cheek, "Would you be able to tell me more about your quirk? I-I have a book where I write down everything and yours is really amazing."

"I'd be honoured, Midi, I'm happy to hear you fascinated with my quirks." Hailey agreed.

"W-wait! 'Quirks'? You have more than one?!"
