Ch.3 Setting a Foundation
Hailey changed from her uniform to the provided fitness uniform in the girl's changeroom, where she attempted to make some female friends with her classmates.
She was to make small talk about what they were expecting from the quirk test, while also explaining what their quirks were.
"Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how producing acid can help me out with the physical stuff, but hopefully I'll be able to show it off somehow." The pink skin and haired one, who introduced herself as Mina Ashido, shrugged, as she smoothed out her new clothes.
"Well, if we are basing our assumptions that the quirk exam will be like another physical exam, if your quirk doesn't enhance your physical strength or stamina, then you won't do very well." The tall and formal girl, Momo Yaoyorozu, stated very bluntly.
Hailey was surprised at the behaviour of some of her new classmates, as some weren't very friendly or optimistic. But the ones that were, were the ones that Hailey gravitated towards.
"Okay then." She muttered, following Ashido and Uraraka out of the change room to the outdoors to the training field.
As the remainder of the students gathered, Mr Aizawa explained what to expect with the testing he was going to conduct. The basic summary were events much like the track and field days that Hailey partook in at her old school, so she understood the premise of each of them; grip test, long jump, pitch test, 50-meter dash, etc.
"Bakugou," Mr Aizawa called out, "you managed to get the highest score during the entrance exam. What was your distance throw with the softball in junior high?"
The student in question, Katsuki Bakugou, stepped forward, "67 meters I think." He answered.
Hailey tried to think what her best distance was, being that she played the sport and had a strong arm from where her playing position usually was. Her best guess was about 85 meters, being that she remembered the competition she and her friends had, which she had the advantage over them to begin with, so she had won the pitching portion of the event.
"Okay, I want you to try throwing it with your quirk." Mr Aizawa instructed.
Excitement surged through Hailey's body and she almost exposed her quirk for it, as she was thrilled at the idea of showing off her quirk and leaving her classmates stunned. She didn't get the chance to tell anyone what it was that her quirk was, or rather what both of them were.
Bakugou walked into the circle drawn in white chalk on the ground, and Kirishima made mention that he heard that Bakugou's impeccable score was due to the mass destruction he focused on the robots during the practical exam.
"That's scary cool." Hailey breathed in awe.
"Kacchan's always been good at everything, he always aims for being first and number one." Midoriya said quietly.
"'Kacchan'?" Hailey questioned before realizing that Midoriya was talking about Bakugou. "You and Bakugou know each other?"
Midoriya awkwardly nodded, "Yeah, we went to the same school and were childhood friends."
"Oh! That's so cool! You at least got one of your friends to be in the same class as you." Hailey gleamed.
"I-I wouldn't call us 'close friends', just old classmates." Midoriya gulped.
Hailey's smile fell and she gave him a sympathetic look, "Sorry to hear about that. If you're running low on friendships, I'm around if you need a friend." She offered.
"R-Really?!" Midoriya was in shock, "You'd want to be friends with me?"
Hailey wanted to cry at how genuine Midoriya seemed with how surprised and excited about the offer. "Of course, you seem like a really great person Midoriya."
Midoriya then cleared his throat to avoid further embarrassing himself, "T-Thank you."
The two then directed their attention back to Bakugou, who threw the softball in a high ark in the air, his explosive quirk propelled the height high into the sky and disappearing in the distance.
All of the students stared in awe and Mr Aizawa showed them the measurement of the distance between them and the ball resulted in being 705.2 meters.
In her head, Hailey critiqued Bakugou's throw, as she noticed that had he thrown the ball more straight, then his distance would have been increased. She doubted that he had the same knowledge in throwing a ball like that as she did, so Hailey figured that she held an advantage in that specific portion.
Some students like; Denki Kaminari, Hanta Sero and Ashido proclaimed their excitement to participate in the test themselves and show off their quirks as much as they want to have fun.
Aizawa frowned and his demeanor shifted, "So, you think this is fun, eh? You have three years here to become a hero. You think it's all going to be games and playtime?" He paused for a moment before a menacing grin spread on his face. "Idiots."
His students stared at him with shock and confusion.
"Today you will all compete in eight physical tests to gauge your potential. Whoever comes in last has none and will be expelled."
"HUH?!" The students shouted in dismay.
Although she felt confident that she would not be in last place, Hailey felt a bit shaken at the idea that someone could be expelled based on their quirk's effect on their strength.
'Is this how things are run in these fancy schools?' Hailey questioned in disbelief.
But she wasn't the only one who was worried about this announcement, as she noticed Midoriya grasp onto his wrist with a look of anxiety and panic. It disheartened her to see him lack confidence in his abilities, as there was his own rumour about what he had done during the entrance exam, his heroic behaviour inspiring her to want to meet him in her class. Hailey put her hand on his shoulder, giving him a means of comfort as she silently told him not to worry and that he would be fine.
Hailey believed that her message was received by her classmate, as he looked to her and sent her a small smile, as he appreciated her support.
"I'll run this class the way that I want to, if you have a problem with that, then you can head on home." Mr Aizawa finished.
A sudden surge of courage filled Hailey as she found her voice and smirked at her teacher.
"You know what? That sounds great, but you might have some trouble finding a loser within this class, because we aced the entrance exam already. I guess we let the results speak for themselves, right Mr Aizawa?" Hailey remarked, holding her arms out in a shrug.
Although some of her confidence was spread to few of her classmates as they voiced their agreement, Uraraka chimed in.
"But you can't just send us home, we just got here! That isn't fair."
Mr Aizawa then argued with Uraraka's point, claiming that a lot of things are not fair, like; natural-disasters, power hungry villains, catastrophic cities, and the whole world. As a hero, it would be their job to combat that unfairness, if they wanted to become pros, they would have to push themselves past it all.
"So like Roselle was saying, show me that it's no mistake that you're here."
