Ch.27 Trying To Make Amends

"How's your shoulder?" Yuri questioned from Hailey's phone that was on speaker mode.

"It's better, been taking Powvil when it started hurting." Hailey answered, eating a piece of toast on the island counter.

Yuri called because he was in Australia for a vacation his skating pals forced him into. His timezone was only two hours ahead of hers, so he called to check on her before she went to school.

"How's Australia? Are you third-wheeling with Yuuri and Viktor?" Hailey giggled, having already met the pair in question two years ago when she and Luka traveled with Yuri on his journey to Japan. Victor had choreographed a skating routine for him, but didn't return to Russia to be his coach, instead choosing Yuuri to coach.

Hailey liked the pair, as they were very quirky and funny, but their talents on the ice had her in awe. Nowadays, the two were engaged and acting like Yuri was their child - which Hailey approved of, because Yuri's biological parents were literally the worst in her point of view.

"You down that stuff like water and you'll get an ulcer." Yuri remarked, a bit annoyed.

"I don't down it like water, I take precautions!" Hailey argued.

Hailey could imagine Yuri glaring at her through the phone, "You take the kids stuff because you hate pills, that's not a precaution, you're just stupid."

"I have a bad gag reflex!" Hailey cried in protest.

"Sorry to the man that you end up dating." Yuri retorted, causing Hailey to shriek out his name.

"Yura! How indecent!"

On the other line, she could hear Viktor talk to Yuri in some Russian, which Yuri's annoyed tone made Hailey assume that Viktor was acting like a doting father. Hailey giggled and she heard Viktor gasp.

"Is that Kheyli?!"

When she first met the figure skater, he translated her name into Russian and insisted that he would forever call her that, as he was very enthusiastic to meet one of Yuri's friends.

"Hi Viktya!" Hailey greeted him, using the Russian nickname that he insisted that she call him. "How are you?"

Viktor took Yuri's phone and took over the call happily.

"I am fantastic! Did Yuri tell you that we brought him to Australia? It's so beautiful here! I figured that we could bring him out into the sun, get him some colour!"

Hailey laughed, "Yeah, he's always holed up at home or in the rink, I second him getting some sunlight."

"You are the reason I had to abandon my cat!" Yuri grumbled.

Noticing what time it was, Hailey gathered her things with her right hand and grabbed her phone, changing it off of speaker and holding her phone to her ear as her bag was slung over her uninjured shoulder.

"Your grandpa's looking after Potya, calm down." Hailey retorted, grabbing an umbrella before locking her door behind her, holding her phone between her ear and her shoulder. She opened her umbrella by holding the extended rod between her thighs and using her right hand to push up and unfold the covering. Then she started to walk in the light rain towards the train station.

Viktor laughed, "You should come and visit sometime, Kheyli! I could choreograph a duet for you and Yurio! Maybe you could compete together this year!"

"I would come up for a visit, but not sure if I'd be competing, Vitya." Hailey pointed out, "I'm a little busy with hero school."

A sad whine was heard from the skater, "Aw, can't you do some of it online like Yurio does?"

Hailey chuckled, "Hero school is a lot different than regular school, Vitya. It's a lifestyle you train for, kind of like figure skating."

"I see, I see." Viktor sighed in disappointment before Yuri snatched his phone back.

He muttered a string of curses in Russian before returning to the conversation, "I might need an escape route from them, ask your мать if I can stay over." Hailey giggled. "But I can assure you that you'll always have a room at the house to come to whenever you need."

"I know, if it were up to her, I'd be your new brother." Yuri chuckled as he became a little more relaxed.

"Roselle is easier to spell than Plisetsky." Hailey playfully pointed out.

"Don't you start." Yuri snickered.

"Hey, I'm just about to the train station, I'm gonna have to let you go. But let's talk later! You'll have to tell me all about your vacation." Hailey suggested as she was approaching the train station.

"Alright, pozzhe."

Hailey lowered her umbrella once under the cover of the building, squeezing the rod between her side and arm. She then hung up her phone and put it into her school bag.

"Can I help you with that?" Someone asked.

"Hm?" Hailey turned to see that it was Todoroki, "Oh good morning, Todoroki."

"Good morning." Todoroki greeted, "Can I help you with your umbrella? Your hands seem full."

"Ah, if you don't mind." Hailey sheepishly laughed and handed the still opened umbrella rod to him, "I usually really love rain, but today, it's kind of a hassle today."

"Understandable, I enjoy most days too." Todoroki agreed, closing up her umbrella and holding it in his hand. "How is your shoulder doing?" He inquired as he walked along side her to the train.

"It's better, Recovery Girl is gonna take a look at a it later today, so hopefully it'll get healed and I can ditch this sling." Hailey answered, keeping herself friendly to not make Todoroki feel anymore guilty than he did the other day. He had a whole day to let his guilt fester, maybe today would be the day where Todoroki proved to her that they could be friends. "I'll probably head to her office at lunch or during training today."

"Oh, I hope that things turn out well for you." Todoroki commented awkwardly, holding back an apology at the sight of Hailey's face practically telling him not to apologize.

"Me too, internships are coming up and I wanna get out there and stop some crimes." Hailey remarked.

During their train ride, the two continued to talk about their internship offers, being that both of their parents informed them of the agency lifestyle.

"Are you going to your mom's agency?" Todoroki inquired.

"Yeah, it's a simple start, plus based on interning heroes do, mom recommends different agencies that she has contact with for work studies." Hailey answered, "How about you? Working at your old man's agency?"

Todoroki let out a conflicted sigh, "He's adamant that I do, but I'm still on the fence."

"I get that, maybe today the teachers will give us a list with all the offers, then you can look into the ones that will offer the most." Hailey suggested with a hopeful shrug of her good shoulder.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The pair continued to walk together towards the school, as the rain continued to fall, Todoroki held an umbrella above both of their heads.

"So, what did you end up doing yesterday? I was lazy and had a movie marathon, so it wasn't very productive." Hailey asked.

Todoroki hesitated before deciding to share, "I visited my mom, for the first time in a long while."

Hailey nodded in understanding and signaled that she was willing to listen if he went on.

"I haven't gone to visit her before because I was scared that seeing my face again would make her feel all that pain from before again." Todoroki confessed.

"But did it?" Hailey questioned.

She noticed a small smile appear on Todoroki's face, "No, it was freeing for the both of us, at least, for me it was."

Hailey smiled, "Like you got closure?"

Todoroki nodded, "Yeah, like that."

"So how is she? Doing better?" Hailey asked.

"I think so, she seemed more at ease." Todoroki answered.

"I'm glad." Hailey grinned, "She seems really important to you, so I'm happy that she's okay."

Todoroki's smiled remained, "Me too. Do you remember her much from when we were little?"

"A little bit, she was your human shield if she took us to the park or something." Hailey snickered, "It was me or her if you wanted to ask your siblings or adults something. You were a cutiepie, Todo, I have the pictures."

"Pictures?" Todoroki repeated, feeling a twinge of embarrassment.

Hailey hummed in confirmation, before Iida, cladded in full rain gear, rushed pasted the pair.

"Woah- good morning Iida!" Hailey greeted loudly.

"Good morning!" Iida turned a greeted back as he kept running towards the school.

"I almost wish I was that enthusiastic to get to class." Hailey chuckled.

"We should still have ten minutes." Todoroki pointed out. "So we won't be late."

"That's good, I feel like it'll be a long day today." Hailey sighed as they continued on.
