Ch.22 Start It Off
The time came for the first match of the bracket to begin, meaning that Midoriya was the first from 1-A to fight.
Hailey sat up on the bleachers in the specified section with her classmates, sitting between Kirishima and Bakugou.
"Alright audience, let's cut to the good stuff and not delay these finals any longer!" Present Mic announced with his usual high level of enthusiasm. "Welcome our first fighters! Whoa he looks kinda scared in that picture, doesn't he?"
Present Mic commented on Midoriya's picture, Hailey let out a playful chuckle. "Oh Midi, what are we gonna do with you?"
"It's Izuku Midoriya from the hero course!"
Midoriya waled out onto the field and Hailey stood up from her seat, "YEAH MIDI!" She cheered loudly.
"Versus Hitoshi Shinsou from general studies, who hasn't really done anything to stand out yet."
"Oh yeah, definitely." Hailey commented sarcastically as she sat back down in her seat.
"Yo Rosie, you okay? I know that guy kind of pisses you off, but I can feel you giving off mad vibes." Kirishima nervously asked.
"Sorry, anger isn't an emotion I've been great with." Hailey apologized and took a breath to settle herself.
Present Mic explained that the main goal was to get your opponent out of bounds, knock them out, or get them to surrender. He encouraged the fighters to get rough and play dirty, because Recovery Girl was there to heal any injuries. The only thing was not to go crazy will the intent to kill, as Cementoss would be the judge of behaviour.
The battle then began, but neither Midoriya or Shinsou jumped into action, instead, it seemed that Shinsou was talking to Midoriya.
"Ojirou." Hailey called to him, not taking her eyes off of the field.
"Yes?" He turned to look back at her from the front row of the seats.
"Did you and Midoriya end up figuring out what that guy's quirk is?" She inquired.
"We think that it's a mind control quirk, one that only works if you talk to him." Ojirou answered and turned back to the field, anxiously on the edge of his seat.
"I see, so unless Midi throws the first punch, there won't be a lot to this battle." Hailey nodded. "Shinsou will try to provoke Midi so that he can use his quirk on him."
The students watched as Midoriya began to run towards Shinsou, shouting at him not to talk about Ojirou that way, but he suddenly stopped in his tracks.
Ojirou let out a groan as he stood up from his seat. "I warned him not to say anything!"
"Huh?! Hey, hey.." Present Mic exclaimed. "What's the dealio?! This is the first round - it should start out with a bang!"
Iida and Uraraka encouraged him to not give up.
This didn't look good for Midoriya and Hailey held her breath as she waited for what would happen next. Midoriya then compiled with whatever Shinsou instructed and turned to walk out of bounds.
Her skin began to crawl as it reminded her of an instance where something similar happened to her.
'Don't walk away when I'm talking to you.'
Blood ran cold in her body as she remembered the feeling of not being able to move her body against the quirk. It was used as an intimidation method when she wasn't compliant. Hailey gripped her wrist as her heart began to race with anxiety, she took in a few deep breaths to settle herself, attempting to remind herself that she was no longer in that position.
As Midoriya neared the boundary, Hailey stood up from her seat and cupped her hands around her mouth, and shouted at Midoriya.
"COME ON MIDI! YOU CAN DO IT! DON'T LET HIM TAKE YOU DOWN THAT EASILY!"
Suddenly a gust of dust and power covered the field and pushed everyone down there a few steps back. When it cleared, it was revealed that Midoriya broke out of Shinsou's mind hold before he stepped out of boundaries.
"YES! I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT!" Hailey cheered with relief and excitement.
"That's how you do it!" Iida and Uraraka cheered.
Hailey and Ojirou sat back down in their seats.
"Whew, that almost killed me." Ojirou sighed in relief.
"That's Midi for you, I knew he'd come up with a way to break out of it." Hailey smiled with triumph and continued to intently watch the match.
Shinsou tried to get Midoriya to talk again, but Midoriya began to charge at him and grabbed onto him, trying to push him out of bounds. Shinsou tried punching Midoriya to stop him, causing Midoriya to stumble back on impact, but was able to get the upperhand by grabbing onto Shinsou and throwing him over and out of bounds.
Everyone stared in astoundment at the impact and Midnight declared Midoriya the winner of the match.
Every single audience member screamed, cheering loudly for Midoriya. Hailey whistled as she cheered as well.

"What a useful quirk." Melodie smiled, typing something in her phone, "Hitoshi Shinsou was his name, right?"
Endeavour looked down at her, "I think so, but his lack of training and level of influence would only make him good in the lower ranks where a hero like Erasure is." He huffed.
Melodie scoffed, "You make it sound like Erasure isn't a powerful hero. He doesn't put on the same performance as you do."
"Now you're making it sound like what I do is put on a show." Endeavour retorted in annoyance.
"Oh no, Hailey puts on a show, you on the other hand, just show off because you have a powerful quirk." Melodie giggled.
"Are you thinking of recruiting him for the internships?" Endeavour asked, looking ahead.
"I'll put in a letter expressing my interest, but it'll be a little harder since he isn't in the hero department." Melodie explained, putting her phone away. She then noticed Endeavour walking away. "Hey, I'm sorry Enji- why are you walking away?"
"I'm going to see Shouto before his match, try and convince him to reconsider his rebellion."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Guess I better go to the waiting room for my match." Hailey sighed, standing up and stretching her arms above her head.
"Alright good luck, Rosie." Kirishima grinned and gave her a thumbs up, then turned to Kaminari, "You too, man."
"Meet you down there, Kami?" Hailey asked.
"I think I'll stay up and watch for a bit, don't miss me too much." He winked.
Everyone collectively rolled their eyes at Kaminari's remark.
"Okay, see you on the field." Hailey awkwardly smiled and walked past Bakugou and up the stairs.
She followed the directions on the walls as she walked the halls of the stadium. She only got down one set of stairs before seeing Midoriya.
"Midi!" She greeted with a bright smile, "You did so good out there, had everyone on the edge of their seats."
"Ah, thanks Hailey. I didn't really follow Ojirou's advice at the beginning of the match, so I was lucky to have reacted in time." Midoriya sheepishly stated.
"How were you able to break out of the trance? Were you more conscious that Ojirou was when Shinsou brainwashed him? Or do you think it was because he already used so much of his quirk on more people on the early rounds?" Hailey inquired with a high level of eagerness.
"O-Oh! I guess I was more conscious of myself so I broke my fingers to free my body would be the best way to describe it." He summarized quickly.
Hailey smiled, "You are full of surprises, Izuku Midoriya. I think you've got this competition in the bag."
"You think so?"
"I know so." Hailey affirmed, "Keep some of those tricks up your sleeve and I guarantee you'll have every agency asking for ya!" Hailey then shook off some of the energy she was getting, "I better head down to the waiting room, my match is right after Todoroki and Sero."
"Good luck." Midoriya encouraged her with a smile.
"Well now I have to do well, because you're sharing your luck with me." Hailey cheekily commented before continuing down the stairs.
She could hear Midoriya shriek as he became flustered.
Goddamn that boy was adorable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sero and Todoroki's battle began.
Reacting quickly, Sero expelled tape from his elbows, binding Todoroki by his knees and upper torso. But before he could get his opponent out of bounds, Todoroki unleashed the largest ice attack, covering half the stadium in ice, some of the glaciers sticking out from the opened top.
Melodie stared at it in shock before turning to the taller, firey male.
"Enji, what did you say to your son?" She inquired, a harshness in her tone.
When he didn't answer, she glared at him.
"'Just a rebellious phase', huh? I recommend reconsidering your plan to get him out of it."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hailey watched on the television in the corner of the waiting room as Cementoss cleared the field of Todoroki's ginormous glacier.
"Man Sho, what's on your mind?" Hailey muttered with concern.
She turned her attention down to her fingers that she was nervously rubbing. She then hooked her two pointer fingers together and a small smile found its way onto her face as Hailey remembered the promises she made with Todoroki when they were younger.
'Let's swear to never lie about anything, even when we feel sad because heroes need someone to cry with! Let's promise it, Sho!'
There was always a part of Hailey that missed Todoroki, him being her friend was her earliest memory that she could recall. And seeing him use his quirk like that could only be evoked with great emotion, to Hailey, he looked sad.
In suddenly walked the person that she was just thinking about, Hailey jolted in surprise at the sight of him, unlocking her fingers.
"Oh, it's you."
"Hey Sho- Todoroki." She greeted, having to correct herself from being in her memories too long, "Congrats on winning your match! Your ice powers are scary cool."
"If your match is next, you'll be waiting a bit for them to clear up the ice." Was all that Todoroki said in response as he started walking away.
"Hey wait." Hailey called, standing up from her chair. "Are you okay?"
Todoroki stopped for a moment before turning his head, "I'm fine, I won and how I feel in none of your concern." He answered coldly before exiting the room.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Welcome back to the finals, everyone! Sorry for that long wait! The insane amount of ice from the second match has finally been cleared though," Present Mic exclaimed as he hyped up the crowd for the next match. "so it's time to welcome new competitors!"
Hailey shook her hands in order to shake off her nervous energy before she walked out onto the field. Once she stepped out, she put a confident smirk on her face.
"Watch out what frequency you catch her in or she'll blow you away! It's the boombastic wavelength from Class 1-A from the hero course, Hailey Roselle!" Present Mic introduced her with enthusiasm as Hailey walked up the stairs as the crowd cheered.
Feeling the energy from the crowd, Hailey decided to play it by lifting her hand up in a strong motion and holding an empowered fist in the air, only dropping it when Present Mic introduced Kaminari as he walked up to the main field.
"Versus the boy with the electric personality! Another hero in the making and same class, Denki Kaminari!"
This was it, Hailey thought as she stared at Kaminari standing from the opposite side of her.
Present Mic encouraged the competitors to make this match interesting and flashy.
"Okay, BEGIN!"
Hailey chuckled and looked back to Kaminari.
"What do ya say me and you go out after this?" Kaminari inquired with a flirtatious tone. "I'd be happy to treat you for a bite."
Hailey covered her mouth and snickered, turning to the side to act sheepish and shy. "Kami, you really gotta work on your timing."
"C'mon and I can comfort you after your loss." He remarked, his tone shifting to overconfidence as he began to charge up his lightning quirk. "'Cause this is gonna be over in two seconds, honey."
"Indiscriminate shock- one point three million volts!"
Hailey smirked behind her hand before he released his attack, "Aw~" She spun on her leg while raising the other and when she faced Kaminari again, kicked the ground like she was kicking a soccer ball in his direction, except instead of a soccerball hitting Kaminari, she released three brightly charged boost wavelengths. "Like I said, you gotta work on your timing." She remarked, her voice no longer putting on a facade. Kaminari was boosted onto the ground, bouncing out of the boundary line and landing on his front.
"Woah! He's out of bounds! That's all, folks! It was over in an instant!" Present Mic announced.
"The winner is Roselle! She advances on!" Midnight declared.
As the crowd cheered, Hailey winked at Kaminari as he stood up.
"Maybe pick a better time and a place for your flirting, Kami, maybe then you can find someone to comfort you after your loss." She teased before walking back down where she entered.
She could hear some heroes in the audience compliment her fast acting and improvising to catch Kaminari off guard. Pride replaced her previous feelings of anger and stress.
This was how she gave the world a taste of what to expect when she became a hero.
