Ch.21 Truth or Obligation?
Hailey followed her classmates back into the auditorium after they all grabbed some food during the hour-long lunch break. Joy filled her body as she was reenergized by some teryaki chicken with rice, as it was her favourite food.
"I'm kind of not looking forward to what's next, because we'd all have to go against each other again." Uraraka sighed.
"Yeah, me neither, because it's usually one on one battles." Hailey agreed with a pout. "I really don't wanna fight you guys."
"Hey, no hard feelings even if we do end up against each other." Kirishima assured Hailey, patting her shoulder in support.
"Alright." Hailey smiled, then noticed her mother walking towards the group in her suit attire. "Mom! Hey!"
"Hey my girl, you're doing so well so far, I already have some agencies asking if you'd consider them." Melodie smiled, then looked to her classmates, "You all did very well, you've impressed a lot of the higher ups."
"Thanks, Ms Roselle." The ones who knew responded politely.
Melodie then stared back at her daughter, Hailey shivered as she realized that she was about to be lectured.
"I saw you use an infrared wavelength earlier. Were you that mad that you could use your own body temperature as a heat source?" Melodie inquired knowingly.
"Woah, you can do that?" Kirishima exclaimed in awe.
"Yeah, that Monoma guy really pissed me off, but I intentionally made it so it only broke apart the gluey substance you were trapped in." Hailey explained.
"Hailey, just be more careful, you know what happens when you are your own power source for the wavelengths further on the electromagnetic scale." Her mother cautioned.
Hailey nodded, "I know, only good in small doses."
"Alright, I'll leave you to it then, I lost track of Endeavour earlier so I'm going to go find him." Melodie stated before walking off.
"What happens when you use those types of wavelengths?" Ashido inquired once Hailey's mom left.
Hailey awkwardly cleared her throat as she recalled the answer. "Um, it's kinda like my body gets super weak if I use a wavelength like that. Infrared is easy because it's heat, all I need is a power source of heat to use it, like when the sun's being hot, or when I'm mad, my body temperature rises so I use that. Other ones that are more dangerous like ultraviolet. My Gran, who has a similar quirk like mine, has cancer because she used literal sources of the stuff because she was immune to it in her earlier years. So my mom and I kinda don't touch the stuff."
"Oh, sorry to hear that." Uraraka sympathized.
"Hey, it's alright, it just means that I have to get creative in her honour." Hailey assured.
Her grandmother hadn't been in Hailey's life much, due to living so far away. Her grandparents were pristine heroes in their prime, back then they were known as legends in the hero world, creating a reputation for the name 'Roselle'.
"That's really cool of you, Rosie." Kirishima smiled.
Suddenly Bakugou walked up to group, "Hey, come talk to me for a sec." He gestured to Hailey.
She blinked in confusion, looking to her classmates to see them just as unsure, but Hailey followed Bakugou as he lead her to an empty hallway for privacy.
"What's up, Baku?" Hailey inquired as he leaned his back against the wall and looked down to the floor.
"I heard some of the guys mention that you used to be close to Icy-Hot." Bakugou stated.
"When we were really young, I guess." Hailey answered cautiously.
"I just want to know what you know about him." Bakugou reiterated, staring at her with a serious expression, "Do you know why he doesn't use his left side? His fire?"
Hailey visibly stiffened and her eyes widened.
She didn't know much about what had happened to Todoroki, but she information that she gathered from phone calls she eavesdropped on between her mother and Endeavour. She only knew that Todoroki'd mother had hurt him in some way after she moved to Tsu'kasa, and it made him resentful of his father.
"I can't answer that, Bakugou." Hailey stated.
"Really? Then tell me something so I know he isn't telling some sob story." Bakugou urged.
She blinked in surprise, thinking that Todoroki actually told him the reason himself.
"Todoroki wouldn't lie about that kind of stuff." Hailey assured.
"Tell me why." Bakugou insisted.
"Bakugou."
"Hailey."
Hailey recoiled as she was caught off guard by Bakugou calling her by her first name. Right, she told him to call her that during the hype of the cavalry battle.
She let out a sigh, "One thing that I remember, that I never could forget is when we did this thing where we hooked our pointer fingers whenever we were about to tell each other something. Like we weren't going to tell anyone, not even his siblings. I like to hold onto the promise that we could always be honest with each other. And now, he's been nothing but blunt with me so, I'm trusting his word. But it's not your business and it's not mine either."
Bakugou let out a sigh as he noticed how Hailey's face turned into a disappointed frown. "Fine, whatever."
With that, Bakugou turned and walked past. "C'mon, we don't wanna miss whatever we have to do next."
"Right." Hailey nodded and followed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two rejoined the rest of the students on the field, as they awaited Midnight to announce the next event that the students would compete in.
She caught up with Midoriya and they both took notice of the other girls in 1-A dressed as cheerleaders, although they didn't look too 'cheery'.
Hailey glanced to see Kaminari and Mineta blushing with their thumbs up, "Don't tell me those perverts convinced you guys to be cheerleaders."
"Those jerks tricked us!" Jirou exclaimed in frustration, throwing the pompoms on the ground.
Yaoyorozu sighed in defeat, falling down to her knees in embarrassment, "Why am I always falling for their tricks? I even used my quirk to make these outfits."
"I don't have much experience with cheerleading, but I'm sure we can come up with something if you still wanna do something before the final event starts." Hailey offered as she sympathized with Yaoyorozu.
Only Hagakure exclaimed how she'd be willing to, but the other girls were embarrassed enough to decline.
Present Mic then announced that the side games for the students who didn't qualify would begin soon.
"After they're over, the 16 students from the top four teams will be duking it out one-on-one style fighting competition! I promise you're not gonna want to miss these epic matchups!"
"Aw yeah, finally gettin' the chance to show what we're made of." Kirshima breathed in excitement. "I watch these finals every year, and now I'm actually in them!"
"So wait, is it always a tournament?" Ashido asked.
Hailey nodded her head, "Yeah it is, always a one-on-one battle, but they always have something different to them, like sword-fighting or some dodgeball thing I remember from one year."
"Come closer and draw lots to see who you're up against." Midnight instructed, holding a yellow ballot box on the stage. "Then enjoy the pleasure of the recreational games before we start. The 16 finalists have the option of participating in those activities or sitting out to prepare for battle. I'm sure you all want to conserve your stamina. I'll start with the first place team."
Before Midnight could do so, Ojirou raised his hand to announce that he wanted to withdraw from the competition, to everyone's surprise.
"Ojirou. No way." Midoriya gasped.
"But this is a rare chance for you to get scouted." Iida tried to convince him to change his mind.
But Ojirou insisted that it wouldn't be right, because he barely remembered anything from the calvry battle until the very end, assuming that it was the team leader's quirk.
Hailey remembered seeing Ojirou with that purple haired guy who declared war on the class a few days ago. She thought that it was odd for him to pair up with the guy that threatened to take someone's spot in the class, but didn't think much of it at the time, Bakugou being a handful earlier.
Hailey stared at the purple haired male in question, who turned away once spotted.
'How fucking ironic- no, fucking hypocritical of him to waltz into our classroom and call us full of ourselves, only to use people so that he can win. Must be his quirk.' Hailey thought as she analyzed the situation.
Another student, seemingly one of the nicer ones from 1-B, withdrawed for the exact same reason.
Hailey could feel her blood boiling in anger once more. She had strong feelings about being used as a puppet, being toyed with and taken control of without your consent. If the odds were in favour of it, Hailey wanted to fight this guy and kick his ass on national tv, to show that people like that deserved some karma.
"You will be avenged, Ojirou." Hailey promised him, nodded her head at him.
Ojirou blinked and nervously asked why she was acting like he was killed, but he awkwardly appreciated the sentiment.
Midnight, in a questionable choice of words, accepted the withdrawals of the two students. She then stated that they would need to bring up two other contestants from the fifth place team to replace the two.
Another student from Class 1-B withdrawed as well, feeling that they didn't fight the entire time because they were frozen, she nominated team Testutetsu to take their place.
"Bro, Class 1-B is so honourable and so legit." Hailey smiled, her anger lowering.
"And so, Tetsutestu and Shiozaki have advanced to the final!" Midnight announced once the team decided which ones would proceed from the group. "Take a look at the bracket, my dears! These are your opponents!"Midnight gestured to the display.
"Seriously?! How does this keep happening?!" Kirishima and Tetsutestu exclaimed in frustration as they spotted that they would be opponents.
"Oh damn, Kami." Hailey pouted, "Looks like we're opponents."
Kaminari smirked at her, "Looks like it, listen, just because you're cute, doesn't mean I'll go easy on you."
Hailey laughed, "Okay, just because you're funny doesn't mean I'll fight like a girl. I grew up as one of the guys, so you might be in a little bit of trouble." She teased.
Then Hailey took notice that Midoriya was the first match of the bracket and he was against the purple haired guy, Shinsou.
She saw him say something to Midoriya and she rushed over to get between them.
"Heeey, Shinsou, right? It's nice to finally put a name to your face, you know, since you didn't introduce yourself when you threatened our class a few days ago. Anyways, we better get going, you know, because we're so self-centred and full of ourselves, we have to stick together." Hailey's tone was very passive aggressive, as she put a face smile on her face. "But would love to catch up later, maybe you could tell me all about your hypocrisy. Okay, bye." She ushered Midoriya by holding onto his shoulders and nudging him away from Shinsou. "Midi, I will pay you mad money if you kick that guy in the balls." She whispered aggressively in his ear.
"H-Hey! Hailey, what's that about?" Midoriya asked in confusion of her sudden actions.
"That guy just gives me a bad feeling, Midi, sorry." Hailey apologetically explained, "I wasn't sure if his quirk was mind control or something and he would try and use it on you."
Hailey wanted to add that Shinsou was bringing up some bad memories for her, but decided against it, not feeling it to be important information.
"Hey Midioriya." Orjirou approached the two of them. "Did you talk to him- did you say anything thing to him?"
"Uh no, I didn't get the chance." Midoriya answered.
"Follow me, I'll help you come up with a strategy." Ojirou gestured with his head for Midoriya to come with him.
Hailey nodded her head at Midoriya, "You got this Midi, I'll be cheering for you!"
With that, she watched him walk off with Ojirou.
"Yo Rosie, what colour are your eyes?" Kirishima asked as he ran to her.
"Hazel, why?" Hailey answered.
"Perfect, you're what I need in the scavenger hunt." Kirishima grinned as he showed her the card to prove that he was searching for a person with hazel eyes.
Hailey giggled and followed Kirishima to the judge that would give him his next card.
She participating in a few more games before deciding to rest of for her match. Knowing Kaminari's personality, she figured out a few possible scenerarios that were likely to happen, then decided her reactions. His quirk could finish the match quickly if he landed any attack on her.
Hailey let out a sigh as she leaned her head against the wall of the floor she sat on. For some reason, felt a bit weighed down, she wasn't sure what it was exactly that was bothering her. Maybe it was those two students who had really gotten on her nerves today? The pressure of being on television for everyone back home to see? Maybe her dad would watch her.
She ran a hand through her hair, frustrated at the sudden mention of her father. He didn't support her dream, tried over and over again to convince her to pursue a basic job that would put her in a life of misery, like his was doing to him.
Maybe this was her opportunity to show him that Hailey was making the right choice, that she was on the right path.
