Ch.17 Let Loose
Hailey scrolled through her phone for a good song to play on the speaker that she connected once she got dressed in her casual attire. She decided to just stick with her favourite half mustard yellow and half black sweater that had 'vibe' written on the yellow top half, as well as some dark blue skinny jeans.
The pizza she ordered had already arrived, so she set the boxes opened on the island countertop to display the different kinds that she ordered. Hailey selected an upbeat pop rock song and danced while singing along with it, shuffling to the fridge to pull out the large one litre bottles of pop.
"So everybody dance and everybody sing- if you wanna go far, if you wanna be a star .Yeah, we can swing it, cha-ching!" Hailey sang happily, swinging her body from the left to right on the last onomatopoeia. "When you take off all your clothes -when you strike a Playboy pose. If you wanna go far, if you wanna be a star - then you gotta bring it, cha-ching!"
If it weren't for the doorbell ringing loudly, Hailey wouldn't have known someone was at the door. She turned down the music and rushed to answer the door.
"Midi? Hey." Hailey greeted her green-haired and freckled friend as she opened the door.
"Hi, Hailey! I wasn't sure if I had the right house or if I was late." Midoriya stammered, his face red for some reason.
"Oh, don't worry, you're the first person here. The others won't be here for another hour though." Hailey pointed out.
"O-Oh! I can leave and come back if that-"
Hailey laughed and moved so that Midoriya could walk through the doorway, "No, sweetie, you can come in and hang out. I'm just getting stuff ready."
"O-Okay." Midoriya blushed and walked in, a gift bag in his hand.
"Wow, your house is really nice - it's really big!" Midoriya exclaimed as Hailey shut the door.
"Thanks, the only reason it's so big, is because my mom insisted on having an office for herself and a hobby room for me - that way the house would be cleaner." Hailey stated with a small chuckle, "Feel free to make yourself at home."
"Thanks." Midoriya smiled back, setting the gift bag on the coffee table in front of the couch that he sat on, "What does your mom do, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Oh, she's the head of Hondashu hero recruitment and provider agency." Hailey answered, plotting herself on the couch and beside Midoriya.
Midoriya's eyes lit up with intrigue, "Woah! Really? Hondashu's one of the top agencies in the country, even though it isn't run by a pro hero! That's so impressive."
Hailey giggled, "My mom is gonna love you, you might become her favourite child."
The two continued to talk about hero agencies and such before Ashido and Kirishima arrived a bit later. Sero was next to arrive and the group continued to chat while indulging in some pizza.
"I gotta say, Rosie, you've got some guts." Sero remarked as he leaned back in the recliner chair. "I can't believe you tried to invite Bakugou to this thing."
"Yeah, I'll be surprised if he even shows up." Ashido added, taking another bite of her pepperoni pizza.
"It's not like it was hard, I just felt bad for leaving him out." Hailey answered with a shrug, "He was a lot easier than Todoroki, I don't know what I did to make him act like I pissed in his cornflakes."
"I think he's just like that with everyone." Ashido suggested.
"I guess, it just kinda sucks because I used to live around here. We were baby friends until we moved when I was four." Hailey frowned, taking a swig of her Dr Pepper in her red solo cup.
"So you have some kind of history." Kirishima stated.
"But nobody really remembers those years, I sure as hell don't. I just know from pictures and what my mom tells me." Hailey sighed, shaking her head. "Where's Kami? Did he get lost?" She asked, changing the subject.
"He probably went to the wrong house, or wrong side of the city because he can't read." Sero chuckled.
"No kidding, maybe he fried his brain and is just walking around going 'weeeeh'." Mina giggled as she impersonated Kaminari.
"That's what happens?" Hailey laughed, "I didn't know that's what actually happened, I thought he was just being funny."
"It was weird to think that his quirk short-circuits his brain." Midoriya chimed in, holding his own cup with both hands awkwardly.
"Every quirk has its drawbacks." Hailey noted before hearing a knock at the door.
"There's Kaminari." Kirishima guessed.
Hailey stood up from her spot on the couch, "Could be, I'll be right back." She said as she walked towards her door and answered it.
"Bakugou! You made it!" Hailey exclaimed in delighted surprise at the sight of the taller blonde.
"Is it the right house?" A woman, who Hailey assumed was Bakugou's mother, shouted as she leaned out of the open window of the car that was parked on the side of the street.
Bakugou growled as he turned towards the card, "Yes it is! You can fuck off now!" He shouted.
"Don't talk to your mother that way!" His mother screamed back.
His mother went back into the car, being eased by who looked to be Bakugou's father in the passenger seat.
Hailey peered over and waved to the car before looking back to Bakugou, "Those your folks?"
Bakugou huffed, "Yeah, they are."
"They seem nice." Hailey smiled.
"Shut up." Bakugou groaned, shoving a giftbag at Hailey and invited himself in the house.
Hailey shrugged and closed the door as she reentered her house.
"Yo, Bakugou, you actually showed." Kirishima greeted.
"Whatever." Bakugou 'tched'.
"Now that you're here, I can grab you your present." Hailey beamed, setting the gift bag on the island countertop. "Grab a slice while I grab it!"
With that, Hailey rushed to her room to grab the dufflebag from her bedroom.
"You didn't need to get me anything, Shitty-selle." Bakugou grunted when she returned and held up the bag.
"Don't be like that, it's an early birthday present!" Hailey grinned, handing Bakugou the bag. "There's stuff inside, so you can open it."
Bakugou blinked but sighed in defeat as she continued to eagerly stare at her.
"Okay! Shit! Stop starin' at me!" Bakugou barked.
Hailey glanced away as Bakugou unzipped the dufflebag, only to look back at him as he pulled out the items that she stuffed in there.
"Yo, those are those microfibre sweat towels! They're really good for your skin." Kirishima noticed.
"I know what they are, idiot!" Bakugou growled at the redhead.
"So you got him some cool workout stuff?" Midoriya inquired, timidly looking over the couch.
Hailey nodded, "Yep, wasn't entirely sure what you'd like, so I just got the basic stuff that I needed for basic sports stuff. You might need it for hero training?"
Bakugou didn't say anything or change his expression as he put all of the items back into the dufflebag. Hailey couldn't tell if he didn't like the present or not, she felt herself sweat anxiously from missing the mark with the present.
"Open yours." Bakugou ordered, shoving the small purple gift bag back at her as he stood up.
Blinking in confusion to his sudden demand, Hailey grabbed the bag from Bakugou's hands.
"Yeah you haven't opened any presents yet!" Ashido effused, teasingly.
"I told you guys not to bring me anything, plus I was waiting for Kami!" Hailey tried to make excuses, but no one was really having it. "Fine!"
She looked inside of the bag and grinned as she pulled out the contents. "Woah!"
Bakugou averted his eyes away, directing his attention on the pizza, "I don't know what girls like, and Dunce-Face was going on about how much you liked music, but the old hag kind of took over."
Hailey giggled as she knew that Bakugou had actually listened in when the guys were asking her the day before about her interests, though she was unsure if Bakugou was using his mom as a scapegoat for the other items. What Bakugou gave her were a bunch of pop rock band CD's and some cute bracelet charms.
"Well done, Baku, I approve of this present! Thank you so much!" Hailey grinned happily, "Usually this is where I'd hug someone for getting me something, but I'm guessing that's not your style?"
"Yeah, keep your hands to yourself." Bakugou answered.
"Fair enough." Hailey nodded.
"Okay, if you're opening presents, come open ours too!" Sero gestured for Hailey to come over to the living area again.
"Alright, alright." Hailey smiled, jumping over the back of the couch to her spot. "Okay, gimme!" She made grabby hands.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After she opened the remaining presents and giving each of her friends a grateful hug, Hailey gathered her presents to get them out of the way and putting them away in her room to later sort through.
Although the friendships she had were relatively new, the people that Hailey invited had gotten her some really great presents.
Ashido had gotten her a cute red, yellow, black and white scarf, and some fuzzy socks. Sero got Hailey some rock band themed scrunchies and a Disco Panik t-shirt. Midoriya happened to get her a bunch of cool socks, some hero themed (mostly All Might because he realized last minute that he was buying for someone else) and some characters that he remembered she mentioned on the days where they ran into each other before or after school. Kirishima ended up buying Hailey a Majestic figurine, which made her squal with delight.
She set all of her gifts onto her bed and returned downstairs, where she could hear fragments of a conversation that was about what Hailey guessed was about her mother's agency.
Ashido turned to Hailey went she came back into the living room, "Hailey, we're trying to settle something; your mom's agency works with U.A. right?"
Hailey thought for a moment, "Um, yeah it actually does." She answered, leaning against the back of the loveseat couch where Midoriya sat.
"What? I would have thought that would be conflict of interest or something." Sero commented.
"That's stupid, kids can go to the same school that their parent teaches at, same goes to hero agencies." Bakugou indicated.
"I think problems would come if Hondashu showed favouritism, like giving me more support tools than what other students get." Hailey added. "I don't know if it would be more of a problem if I was in the support department or the hero department."
The group continued the debate between the hypothetical issue for a little while before the doorbell rang.
They all shared a knowing look before Hailey left to answer the door.
"Kami, I was scared you weren't going to make it." Hailey greeted the cheeky blonde as she led him in.
"Sorry, it's just my style to be fashionably late." Kaminari remarked, handing Hailey a large gift bag, "M'lady."
"Dude you're not fashionably late, you're just late." Kirishima retorted to Kaminari trying to be suave.
"Yeah, even Bakugou's here, and he wasn't supposed to show up." Sero teased.
Kaminari's face blanked as he made the realization that he wasn't seeming too cool at the moment.
Hailey opened the bag to see that Kaminari had bought her a hoodie, as she pulled it out it was apparent that it was two sizes too big, but it was a pastel violet colour with white text that read 'babers'.
"This is really cute, Kami!" Hailey smiled, "And really soft too! Thank you so much!" She then pulled him into a hug to show how happy she was.
Kaminari returned the gesture, while giving the others a smug expression.
Ashido gave Kaminari a knowing glare, "Hey Kaminari, what store did you get that from?"
"Oh, y'know, just some store in the mall." Kaminari answered as he and Hailey parted.
"Here, I'll look at the tag." Hailey suggested, looking at the tag on the inside of the sweater. "'La Sensuenza'?"
"That's a bra store! Have you no shame?" Ashido remarked to Kaminari.
"Dude you got her a gift card there." Sero gestured to the card that had fallen out of the bag when Hailey pulled out the sweater.
"Well she doesn't have to buy lingerie, they have some cute sweaters!" Kaminari exclaimed, awkwardly defending himself.
"You're gross." Ashido deadpanned.
Noticing the change in atmosphere, Hailey tried to offer that they watch a movie.
"Moving on, Kami, you came at a good time, we're just picking out what movie to watch!" She said, setting the sweater and gift card on the counter and making her way to the television stand to look for the remote. "We can rent something that just came out or we can watch something on Viewflix."
"Oh! Let's watch 'Just a Summer's Tale'!" Ashido cheered.
"Ugh no, that's just a rom-com." Sero stuck out his tongue in distaste, "Put on some action comedy."
"How about just some action, where the only thing making it rated mature is the explosions, swears and gore!" Bakugou recommended with a sinister excitement.
"W-We could watch a hero documentary?" Midoirya sheepishly suggested.
"That's fucking stupid, Deku." Bakugou spat.
"There's actually some Hero documentary that's pretty funny, action packed and has some romance." Hailey made note of.
"Hey, that's that - um- shit what's it called? 'Hero's Walk'?" Kaminari asked as he tried to recall the title of the movie.
"I think it's 'Hero's Wake'." Sero corrected. "I saw the trailer the other week, looks pretty good."
"Cool, you guys wanna watch it? I think All Might's in it, Hawks is and he's pretty funny." Hailey grinned, taking the remote and plopping herself on the couch beside Midoriya.
Everyone voiced their agreement and Hailey selected the movie, pressing play to enjoy the film with her friends.
The movie started out with a monologue that explained the jobs of heroes in Japan, their duties and job- but then an explosion erupted from a building, from the opening it created were a group of villains. Changing the mood of the introduction came some pro heroes that the friends didn't recognize. Then the camera swiped to views of various heroes' shoes walking across the screen and suddenly one by one, heroes introduced themselves in their respective interviews. The movie included heroes that were new and rising, old popular ranking and nowadays relevant. Hailey could feel Midoriya vibrate in excitement when All Might made an appearance.
It was interesting to better understand the hero ranking system, where it started and how its changed in current times. There was also an explanation on the rules of being a hero.
There was moments of humour while also most of the movie was action packed and exciting. Although Hawks provided most of comedic commentary within the movie, Hailey made a few funny remarks that made the others laugh as well.
The movie ended about two hours later, the group all stretched their limbs from sitting so long.
"Damn, it's already ten." Bakugou yawned, as he checked his phone.
"What, is it passed your bedtime, Baku?" Hailey teased, as she also yawned. "But sorry for keeping you all so long."
"Nah, this was fun, so don't worry." Kirishima assured tiredly.
The sound of someone entering the house and shuffling around startled the teens.
"Ma?" Hailey called out, thinking that it was just her mom returning from her late meeting.
"Yeah, it's me." Her mother answered as she entered the room. "Oh, all your friends are still here."
"Yup, these are my friends from class. Ma, this is Izuku Midoriya." Hailey introduced her friends.
"H-Hello, ma'am." Midoriya sheepishly greeted.
"Mina Ashido."
"Hi, nice to meet you!"
"Denki Kaminari."
"Sup."
"Hanta Sero."
"Hey there."
"And Katsuki Bakugou."
"...Hey."
"Friends, this is my mom, Melodie Roselle." Hailey gestured to her mom.
"Nice to meet you all as well." Melodie greeted them back, adjusting her suit blazer. "Did you order Hawaiian?" She asked, looking over to the pizza boxes.
"No, that's disgusting." Hailey answered playfully.
"What did I have you for then?" Melodie remarked humorously. "Do you need me to call some cabs for your friends or are they staying over?"
"Oh, would it be alright if I slept over? My parents said it was okay if I went home in the afternoon." Asido politely requested.
"I'd like to st-"
"No, you wasted your chance today, you go home." Kirishima shook his head at Kaminari. "Thanks Ms Roselle, we'd appreciate if you called us a ride home, thank you." He smiled sweetly at Hailey's mom.
"It's no problem, I'll save you all some money and just get one of my assistants to drive you all back to your homes." Melodie assured, pulling out her phone.
"Oh that's special treatment, wow, you guys are her favourite children now. She's known you three seconds." Hailey laughed. "So how was work, mom?"
"Chaotic, we were discussing how many students we'd have room to offer internships to and many we'd be willing to accept applicants for from the Sports Festival." Melodie sighed.
"So there is a limit to how many interns you can have from U.A.?" Sero inquired.
"It's more of who we have available to teach and give students the best teaching experience." Melodie summarized, taking a can of green soda out of the fridge. "It more depends on who catches our eyes, not just you guys in the hero course, but we also pay attention to the support, business and general study students, since my agenc has a bit of something for everyone."
"Yeah, mom went to U.A. too, she was in the business department!" Hailey grinned.
"Knew most of your teachers when they went too." Melodie added, "They were first years while I was a third year."
"Really, got any embarrassing stories about Mr Aizawa?" Kaminari snickered.
"Oh the things I could tell you, but I don't think that he would appreciate me telling you about his awkward phase." Melodie chuckled, "But I think that's for another day. I'll call Whitney to come take you kids home."
"T-Thank you, Ms Roselle!" Midoriya smiled.
With that, Hailey's mom left the room and upstairs, leaving the teens alone again.
Hailey let out a sigh as she looked to her hands as she rubbed her thumb against her palm.
"You okay, Hailey?" Midoriya quietly asked as he noticed.
"Y-Yeah, just thinking about the movie." She lied in a hushed volume, knowing full well her mother's forgetfulness was what was bothering her.
