Ch.16 Finding Some Harmless Fun

It was after the school day had officially ended and Hailey was back at her home, frantically searching for her wallet in her bedroom.

"Why do I never know where the damn thing is?!" She whispered harshly to herself, as she opened the drawer of her art desk. Since her wallet was not in it, she angrily shoved it shut again before glancing around her room to see if it was in plain sight.

"Just had to get a grey colour, couldn't have been a bright colour, neon pink would have been easier to find." She grumbled in annoyance, not wanting to text her mother to see if she had seen it because she always gets the same response that she always got.

Hailey then recalled when she last used her wallet and remembered that she left it in her closet, as she had tossed it in there because she remembered being exhausted from a shopping trip and only cared to discard her wallet at that moment.

She opened her closet door and noticed on the grey carpeted floor was indeed the wallet that Hailey was searching for.

"Perfect! Now all I gotta do is call a taxi-" Hailey decided to herself, but was interrupted by her phone ringing. The contact name read that it was her mother calling.

"Hello, Mummy Dearest." Hailey greeted her mother.

"Hey, just wanted to let you know that I'm picking up dinner tonight, do we need any groceries back at the house?" Her mother inquired.

"Uhhhh, I think it was just fruit and milk that we were missing- hey are you able to stop by the mall or something?" Hailey answered, suddenly thinking that maybe she wouldn't have to leave the house at all.

"I was going to ask Whitney to do the shopping, why?" Her mother responded.

"Well my classmate's birthday is in a few days and I wanted to get him something, I'm not entirely sure what to get him though- what do aggressive men like as presents?" Hailey noted, then thought out loud.

"Does he camp or anything?" Her mother awkwardly asked.

"He could use a nature walk or something to calm himself down - maybe get him a thermos or super big water bottle?" Hailey suggested.

"So a 'Hailey sports kit'?" Melodie chuckled.

"Yeah, like the figure skating one I got Yuri for his birthday! Bakugou does hero training with me, so we'll need: a huge water bottle, sweat towel, maybe a duffle bag to put all the stuff in - make sure it has some orange on it." Hailey instructed.

"Alright, I'll make sure Whitney gets all of that tonight. Anything else?" Her mother asked.

"Oh, just wanted to let you know that I'm having some friends over tomorrow night for a movie night with some pizza." Hailey stated, her voice failing to hide her excitement.

"That works, the house is clean and I'm working late tomorrow anyways." Melodie permitted nonchalantly.

Hailey frowned at the idea that her mother had forgotten her upcoming birthday, but tried to convince herself that the scenario was unlikely. "Awesome, thanks mom. I'll see you tonight, love you, bye."

"Love you too."

A few hours later, Melodie returned home, with dinner and the items that Hailey requested for Bakugou's present. The dinner seemed normal, as the two talked about their day, expect Hailey purposely didn't mention her upcoming birthday, in hopes that her mother would be the one to bring it up. But alas, she did not. Hailey returned to her room with the excuse to put Bakugou's present together, feeling a bit of disappointment. She understood her mother's job took up a lot of her time, but it still was hard not to see her mother most of the time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The day finally arrived, and Hailey couldn't help but look forward to what was to come when she saw her classmates.

It was nice to be the centre of attention for a little while, to feel important for a day.

Hailey was quick to get herself dressed and ready for her day, but in her hurry, she forgot to eat breakfast and didn't realize it until she got onto the train.

'Dang and I am so hungry right now.' She grumbled in her mind, as the train moved.

Knowning her usual luck that came with days that started out similarly, Hailey could only hope and pray that today would only get better from here.

When walking on campus, Hailey was happily greated by Ashido throwing her arms around her shoulder.

"Happy birthday Rosie!"

"Thank you, Ashido!" Hailey grinned.

"You can call me Mina, Birthday Girl, now, how does it feel to be a year older?" Ashido asked cheekily.

"Won't know until 9:15, but I'll let you know when it feels different." Hailey remarked as she continued to walk, Ashido still resting her arms on her shoulders.

"Only forty five minutes away anyways." Ashido noted, "I almost wish you got to skip school on your birthday, but it wouldn't be a lot of fun just hanging out all day by yourself."

"Oh yeah, that would be the worst." Hailey agreed, "Hey are you still good to come over, sorry for the last minute invite last night."

Ashido nodded, "Totally! Can't leave you alone with all those boys, too much testosterone in one room."

"I'm used to having more guy friends than girl friends, so I guess I'm kind of used to it." Hailey giggled.

"Oh honey, you must have missed out on girls nights! I promise to fix that." Ashido assured happily.

The girls entered the classroom, the entire class was already there and chatting.

"We're herrreee!" Ashido announced happily to the class.

Hailey didn't have time to give Ashido a look that told her that she didn't need to introduce her, as the students happily greeted Hailey and wished her a happy birthday.

"I wish you a lovely birthday, Roselle!"

"Happy birthday, Rosie!"

"Aw thanks you guys, not official until 9:15, but I really appreciate it." Hailey was grateful for her classmates and their enthusiasm.

"Same difference." Kaminari shrugged. "Can't really stop class to tell you another time."

"Fair point." Hailey laughed.

"Everyone in your seats." Mr Aizawa ordered the students as he limped into the classroom, still wrapped in bandages. "I know you're all excited to get to training early again today, so settle down and we can get started."

The students did as asked, sitting in their respective desks and answering that they were present during attendance roll call.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After morning classes came to an end, Hailey stood up from her desk to go for lunch, but her classmates told her to remain in the classroom while they went to retrieve some things. Confused, but intrigued, she indugled in their request, leaving her alone in the classroom with Mr Aizawa.

"I could feel everyone jittering that I was waiting for someone to explode, it was loud without anyone saying anything." Mr Aizawa commented as he gathered his things.

"Sorry, guess that's my fault. I didn't think everyone would be so excited." Hailey apologized with a small smile.

"My advice is to just enjoy it before the sports festival, some people take things personally and get too focused on it." Mr Aizawa advised, "Happy birthday, Roselle."

Hailey's smile widened, "Thanks, Mr Aizawa."

With that, her teacher left the room.

Some classmates returned to the classroom, saying that they weren't needed for what needed to be brought back.

"Good lord, you guys didn't have to make a big deal about my birthday." Hailey awkwardly pointed out.

"Aww~ don't be embarrassed, Rosie." Kaminari teased.

"Yeah, everyone's having fun being excited for you." Sero added.

"You're really popular among the class, everyone likes you." Kirishima assured her.

"They do?" Hailey questioned, feeling suddenly emotional and overwhelmed with happiness. "You mean it?"

The boys were taken aback by her tear filled eyes and her wholesome attitude.

"O-Of course, Rosie, you're a likeable person!" Kirishima exclaimed, as he and the other two hugged her tightly.

"More than that, you're so nice!" Sero chimed in.

"And funny and cute!" Kaminari cried.

"We're back!" Midoriya called out as he lead the group back into the classroom, "H-Hey! Why are you guys crying?!" He shrieked at the sight of the teary eyed bunch.

"I just feel so happy!" Hailey declared, sniffling to try and stop tears from falling from her eyes.

"No more tears! Please have a birthday cupcake instead!" Iida suggested, as he gestured to a large tray of cupcakes that Sato placed down on a desk.

Hailey's eyes lit up at the sight of the rows of cupcakes, the icing alternating between white and a light blue colour swirl, the flavours that peaked out seemed to range from vanilla, chocolate to possibly red velvet.

"Wow, those look so good!" Hailey complimented as she got a closer look.

"I wasn't sure what your favourite flavour was, so I made vanilla here, these are chocolate and these ones are red velvet." Sato showcased, gesturing to the three lined groups.

"Oh wow, you made these, Sato?" Hailey asked, picking up a red velvet cupcake.

Sato scratched the back of his neck bashfully, "Uh- yeah, sorry if they aren't very good, I kind of got carried away when making them last night."

Hailey unwrapped the cupcake from its wrapper and took a small bite of it. Her eyes lit up even brighter at the sweet taste and soft texture of the cupcake.

"Are you kidding?! This is so good!" She exclaimed happily.

"Hey! We were supposed to sing Happy Birthday before we started eating." Ashido pouted as she entered the room with paper plates stacked in her hands.

"Too late, I'm busy enjoying this cupcake, this is all you get from me." Hailey said, continuing to enjoy the cupcake in her hand.

The other classmates that were present grabbed a cupcake for themselves, all expressing how delightful and delicious they were. Small talk continued amongst the classmates, as they threw their plates away and gathered their things to be ready to head to the cafeteria.

Hailey noticed one cupcake left over on the tray, it was another red velvet one.

"Hey, did everyone have a cupcake?" Hailey asked aloud.

"I made enough for everyone in class to have one, I guess Todoroki didn't stay to have one." Sato answered, noticing the remaining cupcake.

"Can I deliver this to him, Sato? I'd hate to leave him out because he isn't a fan of big crowds." Hailey questioned, making an excuse for Todoroki's absence.

"Sure, if you want to." Sato nodded.

Hailey smiled and put the cupcake on a paper plate before exiting the classroom in search of her anit-social classmate.

'If I wanted to avoid people, where would I go during lunch? I would be exiting the room because of the line and I see him right there.' Hailey thought in her head, then suddenly caught sight of Todoroki leaving the cafeteria with a tray of food in his hand.

"Hey Todoroki! Todo-Moto, wait up a sec!" Hailey called out to him, this time he didn't stop to talk to her, only continuing to walk away. She caught up to him and walked beside him, partly doing such to merely annoy him.

"Why aren't you with the rest of the class? They're throwing you a birthday party, aren't they?" Todoroki asked, his tone showed his annoyance.

"It was just a small thing, Sato made cupcakes and they're so good. So I brought you one, because I want you to taste what heaven is." Hailey stated, a bit dramatically.

Todoroki glanced down at the cupcake but returned his gaze to focus on looking straight ahead. "No thank you, I'm not interested in a cupcake."

Hailey pouted, "C'mon, it's not like I made it, Sato did and he put a lot of effort into it. I know you don't like me, so I didn't contaminate it in whatever way you'd be worried about."

"You know what, don't eat it right now, but I'm gonna put it on your tray. Throwing it in the garbage is rude to the chef, so if you don't end up liking it, I will eat it for you." Hailey suddenly said, placing the plate on an empty spot on his tray.

"You are very stubborn." Todoroki sighed.

"Sometimes you gotta be in this world." Hailey shrugged, "One thing though; I know that it is very last minute, but I was wondering if you'd like to join me and some others in a movie night at my place tonight? Free pizza, so you could come for a slice and literally leave if that's your style." She offered.

"Persistant as well." Todoroki grumbled before bluntly answering, "I'm not interested in joining in your social gathering, and I've been to your house already, so I don't believe that I'll be missing much."

Hailey stopped following Todoroki, watching him continue on before he turned down another hallway.

She knew what Todoroki meant by him already being at her house before, as her mother had invited his family over for dinner as they just moved into the house. Hailey wasn't present, as she was back at Luka's house attending a 'going away party' that they had planned.

Maybe if she had went to her new home that night, she and Todoroki would be on better terms, at least, that was what Hailey was thinking.
