Violet POV
You know how on New Year's almost everyone likes to tell themselves New Year near me? This was the approach I was going for for my new school year at Prufrock Preparatory. It's not like I did anything bad or drastic that made me hate the year before, but every one has flaws. And everyone has to start over at one point in their lives.

"Can I tell you about the book I'm reading?" Klaus asked.

Klaus was a readaholic. He also was my younger brother that would be starting a new year at school with me. Klaus was very intelligent because he knew so many facts that he had read. Stuff like this ranged from Farm Attire to Algorithms for Solving Rubix Cubes. He knew so much and was always in the process of learning more.

"Go right ahead." I said.

"This book is a based off of Elizabeth Knipe's work! You know who she is, right?" Klaus said eager for my answer.

"I didn't but if I were to guess, she's probably a writer."

"Correct!" Klaus exclaimed. "In the passage I'm reading is of her explaining that if she was to climb a mountain and put the egg at the top of it, all the possibilities that could come from that."

"Possibilities? But it's only an egg." I said.

"Yes! And I'm going to list all of them to you right now!" Klaus said.

"Oh boy..." I muttered. I hope this wouldn't take too long.

Klaus cleared his throat.

"The egg could become unstable and be knocked over by the wind and roll down the slope hitting a ledge or some sharp thing that makes the yolk escape it's shell."

"That seems very likely, but I don't understand how there are many more ways then that or why that's such amazing literature." I said.

Klaus continued.

"Or maybe it didn't find a ledge and rolled all the way down to the bottom. The egg at the bottom might stop moving from being on flat land for such a great time, and be run over by a reckless driver."

"Why does any of this matter?" I said getting annoyed.

"Let me Finish for Christ's sake." Klaus responded. I let him do so.

"Maybe when the egg was rolling it was in a mountain with an abundance of snow, and created an avalanche on the way down. If this happened, I would become a killer of many people and would always live in fear of being locked away for my wrong doings.

Perhaps this egg never did get off balance and had been snatched by a vulture instead. Possibly if that vulture did not come, another person may find this egg at the top of the peak and think it was a miracle. The egg would be worshipped and I would live knowing I started The 'Egg Against Humanity Movement."

Klaus turned the page.

"But in the end, I will never know what really did happen, if it was any of these things at all, for I did not place an egg at the top of a peak after a long and treacherous journey. One day, you may wish to accomplish this and do trek to the top of a very tall mountain to do this and you may find the answer for yourself. Unfortunately, once you do know the answer, it may not have as much importance. - From the Extensive Journal of Elizabeth Knipe." Klaus ended.

"Wow. That was...long." I said. "But still interesting!" I added to redeem myself.

"Did you know that Elizabeth Knipe's initials were EEK? Her middle name was Eve." Klaus said.

"That's great, Klaus! You're such a bright boy!" Our mom said from the front of the vehicle.

Klaus beamed. "If you want I can read another phrase!"

"That's all right, will be here soon anyways." Dad, the driver of this car, said.

"What is the book called?" I asked trying to make conversation.

"It's just a collection of writings from Elizabeth Knipe."

"Why do you like this piece so much?" I asked.

"I enjoy how the writer include different reasons that could happen to this egg. But I'm mostly intrigued by the message." Klaus explained.

"What's the message?" I wondered.

"Honestly Violet, for such a smart girl I'm surprised you can't figure out something as simple as this." Klaus said.

"Are you insulting me?"

He ignored this comment, "This passage is talking about how if you don't try something, you'll never know the outcome. But once you know the outcome it doesn't feel as much of an important thing."

"And is that an inspiration to you?" I replied sarcastically.

"In fact yes. Yes it is. I also think you should appreciate wonderful pieces of literature such as this one." He commented.

"I DO appreciate-"

"We're here!" Mom screeched out before we started insulting each other even more.

We had arrived at the school and were in a line with other cars that were dropping off students.

"Have fun this year you two! I love you both so much and I can't wait until we meet next Thanksgiving!" Mom said.

"We'll miss you." I said.

"Don't get into any trouble with any of the other kids!" Dad added.

"Since when have we ever gotten in trouble?" Klaus said.

"Remember last year when Violet's roommate drew-" Dad started but our Mom didn't let him finish.

"Oh, and be good for the new principal!" Mom told us. With that the car zoomed off and away from The Hinterlands.

I wish that I had said more to them as they left or had been able to hug them tight once more. But there was no way I would have been able to know that this would be the last time I'd see them alive. There was no way I could have expected anything that happened this year.

"New Principal?" I asked Klaus.

"Did you neglect that too? Nero finally got fired as Vice Principal and we have an actual principal now." Klaus explained.

"Who is it?" I asked.

"Do you remember the librarian we saw on the last day of school?" Klaus said.

"Olivia is the new principal?"

"No, the other one."

I paused for a moment to remember her name.

"Marie Frisco?"

"That's the one." Klaus responded.

"Isn't Frisco a city in Texas?"

"Yes." He said.

"And doesn't Frisco rhyme with Crisco?" I asked.

"Yes?"

"So we're just going to trust someone with a last name that is a city in Texas and rhymes with Crisco?!?" I said.

"Yeah why wouldn't we? Anyone is better then Nero." Klaus said.

I probably would have interrogated him further with useless questions (that was my specialty) but I saw my two favorite people run up to me. They were my two best friends I had met last year, San and Sabra (yes those are their real names).

Before I continue on, I'd like to explain how and why I'm even friends with these two to even begin with.

Sabra was the first person I met at this school because we have been put together as roommates. Our first conversation was of why she was named Sabra (not too eventful of a story, just that her parents were eating humus one day and thought Sabra was as unique of a name as it got so that name worked) and what her favorite color was (which coincidentally was Violet).

Sabra also has a particular interest in checkers. Not the game (even though she is pretty good at that too) but is interested in the checker pattern. She's really obsessed with this style. She is so obsessed that one night when I was asleep, she drew the pattern onto anything she could find in our room. If I hadn't been awoken from the strong stench of a sharpie, my back pack would have looked a lot different then it is now.

In her rampage, she drew on the walls, the lamp, and even on the single window we had in our room. The school called both of our parents and even though Sabra took the complete blame, my parents were still disappointed in me.

A week or so later, Sabra told me how she got a call that night from an anonymous number saying if she didn't vandalize the room and blame it on me, this person would come to kill the both of us. She was shaken from the thought of that and did vandalize it (using her own style as the person requested) but took responsibility even though she wasn't supposed to. It was probably a prank call, but Sabra took this seriously. This was my favorite and least favorite memory with her because it was when I realized she took responsibility even though it was a hard thing to do, but had still marked up the room.

Our old room has now been marked off with 'DO NOT CROSS' tape against the door and if you didn't know the story of what really happened, you probably believe in the rumors that this is where a murder occurred.

Now for San. San May sound like a boy name, but she's definitely a female. I first met her when she came to school a month into the school year. When she asked Sabra and I if she could sit with us at lunch, we said yes and was glad we could help. She explained to us (after we asked) that she was named San since her parents wanted to name her after a city, because they were into geography. They noticed how San was at the beginning of many of her parent's favorite cities (San Francisco, San Antonio, and San Diego) and thought that that would work.

We bonded with her so quickly and became a trio. We had once tried to make a name for our little trio but nothing really stuck. We tried calling ourselves The SVS, not saying each letter but like 'suh va suh' and counted it as a failure.

I remember where I was and what was going on and embraced my friends.

"I missed you so both so much!" I said.

"Aww, so have we!" Sabra said.

San agreed. "It's been too long!"

We ended our embrace.

"We have great news!" San said.

"What?" I answered eager to know what was in their minds.

"We're roommates!" They said together.

"The two of you?" I asked.

They nodded enthusiastically.

"Oh..." I said not really sure what I was feeling about this inside.

I knew that I should be happy for them, but I could help but feel a bit disappointed. It was only fair anyways, since I had been with Sabra the year before and San had to have been with a roommate she never connected well with.

"That's great!" I said faking my excitement. "But wait, I thought roommates were assigned by last name? Muir and Boticello aren't that close to each other."

"The new principal made it random and we were just lucky enough to get put together!" Sabra said smiling.

"It must have been fate!" San exclaimed.

"As I said before, that's great! Would you by any chance happen to know who my roommate is?" I asked.

"I asked the lady giving the assignments and she quickly said 'it's a very nice girl who is shy and kind' (San said this part mocking a high voice). It was weird how that woman got all frazzled by the question but she was probably stressed." San ended.

Klaus waved trying to get my attention, so I planned to end this conversation.

"I think Klaus and I are going to head to the administration building to get our schedules for the year.

I followed Klaus's eyes and saw him looking at a new car that had just arrived. Now that I was looking, my whole friend group did the same.

If this was some kind of movie scene, the people would have been getting out in slow motion with the wind perfectly hitting their hair. Much to my dismay, these people were the Quagmires. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against them (for the most part), but I should explain the deal with the Quagmires in our little trio.

San has a crush on Quigley. Sabra has a crush on Isadora (yes she likes girls). And if you're thinking now that I must have a crush on Duncan, you're just as sane as San and Sabra. They think that our trio is meant for these triplets, but I feel as if I'm stuck with leftovers that is Duncan and I'm not hungry. I'd rather be having McDonald's. He's a nice guy, but I don't like him in that way.

Now I was wishing I hadn't ended this conversation and could continue on to this instead of seeing my two friends drool over them.

"C'mon guys! I thought you were over them!"

"We never said that." Sabra said still looking at Isadora.

"Violet! He's looking at you!" San said trying to play cool.

I turned back around to face them and in an instant, regretted it.

Quigley winked at me which led to me rolling my eyes and looking the other way. I couldn't think of a more obvious sign that I wasn't interested in him but he still wouldn't give up. I remembered another rude gesture, so I help up a certain finger in front of me where he would definitely see it, but that San and Sabra wouldn't notice it.

Mid-sneer I saw Isadora scrunch her nose in confusion, point to herself, and mouth 'me?'. I dropped my finger and shook my head sincerely. She acted out a sigh of relief and I smiled, glad that this was resolved. But now Duncan thought I was smiling at him and gave me a smile as well.

Not knowing what to do, I continued smiling and did a small wave. When they entered the building, I turned to face the girls.

"That was-" I began to say.

"-Exciting?" San suggested.

"-Perfect?" Sabra suggested.

"-Neither." I said. "That was absolutely terrifying."

Welcome to the A/N section! Whenever I put a dotted line at the end of a chapter with the word count, it becomes the A/N portion. I'll always have the word count and there might be a smaller A/N at the beginning of the chapter occasionally.

I hate this chapter a lot, but it's necessary in order for you to understand what's going on (even if it's boring). The introduction is just doing its job.

Here we introduce Violet's 2 best friends, San and Sabra. So far, all the ocs I've written with have only been involved for a few chapters so this will be new for me.

Also, Elizabeth Knipe isn't a real person. The thing that Klaus was reading was something I made that sounds all old timey. I'm planning on making a book where I put all of the small writings of all of my books, which is anything in italics so you can look for that soon. Practically it will be of Common Place Notebook Entries from Duncan & Isadora in The Buddy System, Couplets from Isadora in TNHTSG and The Buddy System, Readings from Klaus in The Journalism-Inventing Club, and anything else that seems needed.

I'll see you the next time I'm ready with an update!
