Chapter Sixteen - Atticus and Ryhan 2
I woke to a knock at my door. I lifted my head slightly, still half asleep. The knock came again, then without waiting for an answer, Damian shoved the door open and stepped inside. I groaned and pulled my blanket over my head.
"Get up Eris. You wanted to talk and now I'm here."
"Go away and come back another day!" I mumbled, my voice muffled by the blankets.
"I brought you Starbucks..." he coaxed. I tossed the blankets away and jumped out of bed, then stopped when I saw he's empty handed.
"Liar!" I accused. Damian laughed and grabbed my wrist to tug me toward the table.
"Have you looked at the laptop?" he asked. I shook my head with a sigh and slid into a chair. "C'mon, Eris, I'm trying to help you. I know Aria's death was probably a huge shock, but right now we need to focus on this opportunity. Open the laptop."
"Fine, bossy," I grumbled and hit the power button for the device. Seconds later I'm staring at the home screen, and I had to admire the wicked fast technology.
"Ok, there are some files that we uncovered yesterday. I shared them with you. Click there. Now that one..." Damian directed me.
A few seconds later a video started playing. It was a white room with hard metal bunks. I recognized them as the usual rooms for trainees.
The door opened. Two people stepped in; well, the first was more like thrown in. I stiffened as I identified the curly dirty blond hair. Atticus.
His white jump suit clad body slammed into the ground, but he jumped to his feet and ran at the door, toward the person who tossed him in. The door swung shut with a clang, and Atticus slammed into it at full speed. He bounced off with a groan.
"Stupid...stupid!" He mumbled to himself as he pushed his palms against the door and leaned his forehead against it. His eyes closed and I watched him breath deeply. In and out. In and out.
Atticus sighed and straightened, his eyes snapping open. He walked over to one of the bunk beds and swung himself onto the top easily. He flopped back on the mattress and stared at the ceiling. Even though I didn't know him so well, I could see the silent fury in his eyes.
"How long has he been at the Institute at this point?" I asked Damian. He shrugged.
"Almost two weeks. He's still fighting them."
"What about Ryhan?"
"See for yourself," Damian murmured, nodding at the screen.
Just as Damian said the words, the door opened again and Ryhan was tossed to the floor. She let out a groan of pain, and didn't get up even when the door slammed shut a second later.
"Ryahn!" Atticus shouted, jumping down from his bed. He crouched on the floor beside her and rolled her over. "Are you alright?" He asked quietly, brushing her red hair away from her face.
"Fine...fine," she muttered and struggled to sit up. Atticus pulled her to her feet and wrapped her in his arms, hugging her tightly, protectively, as she shuddered slightly with sobs.
"What'd they do to you this time?" He questioned.
"The usual. Threatening me. But...I saw her."
"Eris?" The way Atticus said my name made my heart sink. Of course they'd tell my friends it was my fault they were kidnapped.
"No. Aria," Ryhan whimpered.
"What? Really? Where?" Atticus demanded, placing his hands on Ryhan's shoulders.
"She's dead," Ryhan sobbed. Atticus froze then pulled Ryhan back into a comfort hug.
"Oh gosh...I'm so, so sorry, Ryh. I know...ugh. She loved you, ok? I love you."
Ryhan nodded into his shoulder and he kissed her forehead, just like he did with me. My throat tightened slightly as I watch them.
"We'll get out of here, I promise," Atticus murmured.
"What about Eris?" Ryhan asked, lifting her tear stained face. Atticus jaw formed a hard line as he stiffened.
"She's got to be around here somewhere. They keeping tell us that we were her mission or whatever. She's probably watching us and laughing." Atticus released Ryhan and paced the tiny room, kicking out at the metal bunk beds as he did. "She played us and we followed her. We trusted her."
"Atticus, what we saw was real. Probably. Eris is just as trapped as we are."
"You don't know that," Atticus argued. Ryhan shrugged.
"But I can guess. She was happy when we were all together, and there...I don't know...there was this depression whenever we left or Eris had to go. Whatever she did or is doing, she regrets it."
Atticus shook his head. "Believe what you want. But that doesn't change the truth that Eris betrayed us. Look around Ryhan! We've been kidnapped and beaten and forced against our will. She did this to us."
The video went black. I was silent and stared at the dead screen. I hated that they hated me.
"I have work to do. Peter and Melanie will meet you at the gym in an hour and I'll send someone to bring you there. After that is breakfast, and then back to the gym. We have a very delicate opportunity here and we can't risk messing it up," Damian reminded me for the millionth time.
"I won't. I'm going to destroy them."
