Chapter 52 - Difficult Conversations.
The plan had been set in motion. Rosemonde's team of Warrior candidates were gathered in Tweldor's Great Hall.
Ursula never tired of looking at the art and the ceiling mural in the assembly area. It was like being at The Hermitage Museum, in St Petersburg. Her reflective mood soon turned serious, however, when she noticed the look on Hannah's face. "Hannah, what is it?" she asked her.
"We have a problem!" Hannah gulped.
"Just the one?" Morgan asked sarcastically.
Hannah was not amused. She wanted to explain the issue to the others rationally, but she soon became emotional. Morgan apologised when he realised that she was upset.
"Sorry love. I was just trying to lighten the mood. We're all a bit stressed out. Has something else happened?" he asked.
She nodded and began to cry. The other Councillors were concerned now. They rarely saw Hannah like this.
"Please continue sweetheart," Agatha said kindly, and Ylva put a comforting arm around Hannah's shoulders.
"Rosemonde was captured on someone's dash cam, and they sent the footage to the media. Now there are do-gooders out there looking for her. They are searching the bush in the area where she was last seen. It's all for the hashtag innocent Rose campaign, which as you know I started. I mean yeah, it's great. Most are just trying to help but, well... Oh, what have I done?" She exhaled, clearly distressed. "They are going to get in the way! We may not be able to protect everyone, and you can bet Asmodeus and his clowns are out there with them too! Things just got a whole lot harder and much more complex. An already dangerous situation has well and truly escalated."
"Shit!" Liam's was one of the more polite responses.
"No way is this your fault, Hannah!" Ursula said. "That campaign may be instrumental in getting Ros' a fair trial."
"Absolutely!" Ben said.
The same sentiment was echoed around the room. Rosemonde hugged Hannah warmly, assuring her that there was no way she held her responsible for this development.
"This is hardly your fault, Hannah. Please, you mustn't blame yourself." Rhys sighed. While Hannah had clearly done nothing wrong, there was no denying the frustration of the situation. Both he and Mairead had spent many hours coaching Rosemonde and Myrddin on how to present themselves upon their return.
Mairead directed her attention to Rosemonde. "Whatever happens now, no matter who approaches you, or what is said to you, you stay on task and in character. It is vital that you do that, now more than ever," she pleaded.
"I wish I could come with you," Drew said to Rosemonde.
"You're a famous rock star. You know my being seen with you now, would complicate things. You are with me here though." Rosemonde put her hand on her heart. "Don't doubt it."
"Love, just be safe," Drew murmured as he kissed her cheek sadly, and nestled his face in her hair."
"Ahem! I need everyone to focus please." Rhys was torn between amusement and annoyance.
Drew and Rosemonde were constantly gazing into one another's eyes or holding hands. As soon as classes ended, they would wander off together. It was beautiful. It was nauseating. It was dangerous.
Rosemonde left the outside world as Myrddin's girlfriend. If she appeared in love with anyone else, she would appear fickle at best, and may even reawaken those rumours about herself. The plan was for her to appear afraid of Myrddin and of men in general, for the moment. It was best for all concerned, that Drew stayed away from her. He would go back to promoting his band's new album, Leap of Faith.
Theodora was in the same position. She could not reveal her relationship with Myrddin. She would return to living with Mairead, occasionally helping the authorities with her psychic insight.
Unlike Mairead, she had made a living from her psychic abilities. As a result, she'd had far more practice at honing her skills, and this had been further enhanced during her time at
Tweldor. This was of great concern to her now. Did she really want to continue to give psychic readings to people? Now that she truly understood what was out there? Could she?
She was not surprised when Libuse had come to see her privately, when classes had ended. She recalled their conversation:
"You did not do as I asked. You haven't told him," Libuse reproved.
"I tried to I really did!" Theodora said, tearfully. "There was always so much going on. There never seemed to be an appropriate time. Now it's too late."
"Is it?"
"Libuse, he needs to concentrate on the mission. This would be a terrible distraction! I can't do that to him. Not now."
"You are making a lot of assumptions," Libuse replied.
"But what if the news is too much? What if he becomes so confused that he makes a mistake — a fatal one?" Theodora implored.
"Asmodeus likely already knows. What if he is the one who tells him and not you? Would that not be distracting for him?"
"Oh, my God!" Theodora began to sob.
"I think it best that you tell Myrddin, Theodora."
"Tell me what?" Myrddin was suddenly there with them. There was no escaping it now. "Tell me what, Dora?"
"You both have much to discuss. It's time, Theodora," Libuse said as she left the room.
"Wow! She did not look pleased. Hey, why are you crying, babe?" Myrddin folded his arms. His posture became aggressive. "Theodora, what's going on?"
It had been one of the most difficult conversations that Theodora had ever had.
