Chapter 28 - Chasing Rainbows.

Christian Berg stormed into the office space he shared with his partner, slamming the door behind him. Yesterday he had been euphoric. Today, he was practically spitting blood. "How can you do this?" he demanded.

"Chris -"

"He's out on bail because of your recommendation, Andrea! The judge said she based her decision on your final report in which you state that Constantine Papadopoulos is not a threat to the community."

"And I don't believe that he is!"

"He killed her Andrea! You know that."

"No Chris, I don't. In fact, we may even have evidence to the contrary."

"What are you talking about?"

"What I'm talking about is the fact that when you go gallivanting about the countryside chasing rainbows with your psychic friends, I am actually working! I'm following up on tangible leads."

"The psychics found Summer's body, Andrea. You can't deny that!"

"And I believe I may have found the REAL murderer, Chris!"

"What do you mean Andrea?"

"Gwendolyn Thomas, Myrddin's sister, was here yesterday. She was quite distraught didn't want to accept it at first."

"Accept WHAT, Andrea?"

"Ms Thomas presented us with an old spell book that she came across in her brother's house. I believe your spooky people would refer to it as a grimoire. There are notations throughout the book in Myrddin's handwriting."

"So? He was interested in the occult. He told us that."

"SO? There are also notes at the back of the book like diary entries, and they are rather incriminating. They discuss ritual murder, Chris. They imply that Myrddin killed someone. If he's done it once-"

"There's a logical explanation. Let me see it."

"No Chris, no more! I've recommended that you be removed from the case. The boss agrees with me. You've been erratic Chris. You're taking this paranormal stuff way too far. It makes us both look unprofessional. I did this to save your job. You should thank me, and get back to behaving like a real police detective again."

They've gotten to her... Christian looked at his partner, incredulous. "You didn't do this for me, Andrea, you did it for you! You don't care about the victims at all, do you? You like the limelight. You want the glory. Okay, fine...take it. Congratulations! It's all yours now, your big prestigious case. Why don't I make it even easier for you?" He took off his holster and removed his badge. He placed them both in the wastepaper basket near her desk. "I'm done," he said.

"Oh, don't be so bloody melodramatic Berg! There are other cases that need your-"

Christian didn't even look at her as he walked towards the door. "Tell the boss, I'll fill out the necessary paperwork tomorrow. I quit!" He left without looking back. God help me, I can't understand this! We finally had that monster. Now he's out on bail? It's just so wrong.

He rarely gave in to despair. Even when he had been the one to find his little girl's body...he had been back at work within weeks, determined to find her killer, adamant that no other family would suffer as his family had.

When the job in homicide had come up, he'd applied and was accepted, against the wishes of his wife. He became driven and he had driven her away. An absent father to their remaining child, a husband in name only, he hadn't been surprised when she told him she had to go.

"I love you Chris, but you're never here! I can't do this anymore."

He'd been the one to move out. It made more sense. She had remained in the house with their son.

Apart, they found that they could remain friends. In fact, they were still technically married. Neither had shown much interest in dating other people. Perhaps that was why they hadn't gotten around to getting a divorce.

For Christian, there would never be another woman like Gianna. It was times like this, that he really missed her. He supposed there was no real reason, why he couldn't call her. We are still friends after all...but he knew he wouldn't do it. He had become a coward when it came to her.

Maybe he'd drop by and see his son, Leo...just hang out, have a beer. He smiled to himself when he realised that he had in fact stopped outside the computer gadgets and repair shop where his son worked part-time. He hadn't intended to walk so far, but he was glad he did. The bell on the shop door jingled. As he made his way inside, Leo looked up with a laugh.

"Hi, Dad."

"Leonardo, what's the joke?"

"Both parents on the same day? What gives?"

"Your mother visited too?"

"She's still here. Actually, she said that she was waiting for you."

"Waiting, for me?

"Yep, she's out the back."

"Right. Well, I guess I'll see you in a bit then." Christian took a deep breath.

"Dad, chill! She's not going to bite you," Leo laughed.

Christian smiled at his son. "Yeah, I know that," he said.

He hadn't seen Gianna in weeks. Every time they had spoken, since their separation, it was the same. His heart would race, his palms would sweat. If she ever did ask him for a divorce, it would shatter him. And he half expected it...every-time-he-saw-her. Was this it? Did she finally want to make it official?

He found her in the staff room sipping a hot chocolate. As he approached her, he noticed tears in her eyes. Oh, no! He braced himself.

"Christian, you look terrible." Gianna smiled at him sadly.

And you look so beautiful, he thought. Out loud he said, "It's been a rough day."

"I know, I heard. I'm so sorry. I just...I just wish you'd stop trying to save everyone. You can't possibly, don't you see? Bad things happen to good people. They always will! All we can do is try to protect those we love, but...if someone is lost along the way, it doesn't mean it's your fault. Please, you are going to kill yourself. I can't..." Gianna cleared her throat, determined to choose her words more carefully. "Our son can't lose you too," she said.

Christian did not miss the anguish in her voice. Is it possible? Could she still care for me...as more than a friend? He wanted to take her in his arms, but since their separation, he was shy with her. Instead, he said, "I'm not going to kill myself. I quit! I've handed in my gun and my badge."

Oh, thank God! "What are you going to do? You can still be a Luminous Warrior of course. I know they've approached you," she said.

"How-how do know about that?"

"When we first separated, I was so angry with you. I wanted to file for divorce immediately. Something stopped me. I prayed, meditated, call it what you will. I asked for help, and help came. Both Leo and I have been warrior candidates for the past six months, so I know they've approached you."

Christian was speechless. He could hear his son locking up out front. What did this mean for his family? Could they be a family again?

"Christian Berg don't you dare do the I'll-stare-off-into-space-so-I-don't-have to-respond thing!" Gianna flared.

"You told him then?" Leo had finished locking up. He beamed at both his parents.

"Yes, and he hasn't said a thing-"

"Mum, calm down! Can't you see he's in shock?"

"Oh. Right. Sorry."

Christian began to laugh. "This is...surreal! I don't know what to say. Why didn't you tell me?"

"You weren't ready to hear, or accept it, sweetheart," Gianna blushed when she realised what she had said.

"Sweetheart? Is that...is that what I am to you?"

"Always. I mean...do you still want to be?"

Christian choked back tears. "Always," he replied.

Leo was grinning from ear to ear. Every kid wants their parents to get back together. He wasn't a kid anymore. He was now a young man of nineteen, but he still needed his dad and so did his mum. Better late than never, right?

"Does this mean...are you guys getting back together?" Leo looked at his parents in anticipation.

"Gianna, I'm so sorry. I realise, I left you long before we actually separated, but I'm ready to try again, if-if you are." Christian no longer hid his tears.

"I didn't understand the way you needed to grieve. I'm sorry too, if you can forgive me, I'd like to try again too," she said.

"YES!" Leo punched the air when his parents kissed each other lightly on the lips. He couldn't even remember the last time he had seen them being affectionate towards one another. He laughed happily when they both pulled him into their hug. "Vladimir was right...prayers are answered. It's probably a good thing he isn't here to witness this though. He'd be howling uncontrollably. I believe you've met him, Dad?"

"Ah yes, he's currently my favourite werewolf." Christian laughed before turning serious and releasing them both from the hug. "Have you met Myrddin yet? I'm worried about what they are saying about him."

"We haven't met him because he has been denied entry to Tweldor," Gianna said.

"Denied? Then that means-"

"You like him, don't you?" she asked.

"I do. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. I want to hear it from him," Christian replied sadly.

"Agatha likes him too. She said the same thing."

"So did Vladimir-" Leo suppressed a laugh and cleared his throat. "Sorry but that fur ball really cracks me up."

"The fact remains that only those who are false are denied entry. He may not have killed anyone, but he is hiding something. Unless he is more transparent, he remains outside and always a crow," Gianna explained.

"Raven Mum, get it right!" Leo admonished.

"The point Leonardo, is that only those within the citadel have the power to transform him back into a man."

"So where is he now? Has he flown off again?" Christian asked.

"No, apparently he remains outside. That's something that Agatha is using to argue his case. She reasoned that if he were evil, he wouldn't stay with the gargoyles-"

"Um, gargoyles?" Christian sat down. He was never going to get used to this.

Leo chuckled. "It'd be easier to just show him, mum..."

The reunited family stepped outside together and readied themselves for their unusual journey. It had been raining while they had been inside, and Christian grinned to see a double rainbow in the sky.

Thank you, God. Everything was going to be alright.
